The design of the headlight lenses on the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii provides poor night visibility due to sever degradation of oem headlamp system. The reflective lens on the inside of the housing has melted away to the point that this makes night driving dangerous if not impossible with out some sort of aftermarket lighting system or oem replacements which will soon fail and cause the issue all over again.

The 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii was purchased in November 2005 and the headlights have been deteriorating constantly since purchase. I now have to use the high beam at all times after dark. 47 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 09/15/2004

I just purchased a 1996 Lincoln mark 8, while driving it home, it got dark and I turned on the lights. . . The lighting system was terrible. I could hardly see. This is extremely dangerous. How can a person drive at night, if the lights fail to properly illuminate the highway? as I got to checking, this is a severe problem with this car, as complained about by other owners. Is there anything that can be done? these are the orginal lighting units from the factory, and they are extremely dangerous.

48 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 12/08/2003

The headlights that came standard on 1993-1996 Mark Viiis are not safe for public roads. They are probably the weakest headlights ever placed into a vehicle during the 1990s. Im surprised they even passed the dot regulations. The headlights provide very little lighting for the road and they do not even give enough light to the street signs so that they can be read legibly and easily. Driving on a poor lit road is impossible without turning on the high beams because other wise you become a hazard because of poor visibility. Ive been in countless near accidents due to the poor lights and because they barely light up the markers on the middle of the road. They either need to replaced with the hid units that are available, or at least improved drastically; otherwise the risk of having an accident with this car during the night increases at least 10 fold.

49 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 11/17/2003

I recently took my 97 Mark Viii to the shop to replace the low intensity beam. The cost of this item spiraled from $262. 00 to $1493. 00 within a matter of hours to replace one set of lights. This is highway robbery and usury at the highest level .

50 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 10/16/2003

I have another complaint for the same event that was just filled for the lack of proper head lamps on this year vehicle. As I own two of the same car I am also filing for this one as well.

51 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 10/16/2003

Head lights on both of my 1996 Lincoln mark vlll s are very poor and do not illuminate the road sufficiently. I just missed hitting a dog this evening on my way home as these lights on both cars are defective and the manufacturer refuses to replace them. They should be recalled.

52 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 06/20/2003

When the driver's side low-beam hid headlamp began failing, I took it to the dealer, since parts are not available anywhere else. Then I found out that parts will cost $780 ($200 for the headlamp + $580 for an "upgraded" mounting assembly which is required due to parts obsolescence and a Lincoln engineering mistake). After some complaining, I got Ford and the dealer to reduce cost to $380 for parts plus $120 for labor. $500 to replace a headlight (required safety feature is absolutely unacceptable!.

53 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 06/17/2003

The head lights on the vehicle have become opaque over a few years. The consumer is concerned that the lights are not working like they should. The vehicle manufacturer and the lens manufacturer have been informed of the problem.

54 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 06/12/2003

Replace head light assembly, cost $700. 00 Ford should pay for this. Since it was their fault for not stocking parts. Used parts were used. I have not way of knowing how long this will last. If my other side goes out I am facing another expense of replacing it since it is the law to drive with head lights on when raining or through a construction zone here in PA. Why should I as a consumer have to pay such a high cost to repair these lights. If I had known of this problem I would have made sure that I did not buy one of these cars, made in Jan. Through March. I feel Ford should be responsible because of its design flaw.

55 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 05/16/2003

While driving the headlight overheated and burned out.

56 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 04/08/2003

Headlights on my 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii suddenly went out while driving on the highway at 70 mph causing a near fatal crash. I luckily ran off the road into a muddy grassy area and became stuck and not killed. I took it to the shop only to find I could not afford to get the lights repaired because the headlights on this car cost $1600. 00. The bright lights still work, it was only the dimm lights that went out for no reason. The manufacture of these lights should be punished for selling a product that's substandard to much cheaper and safer headlights. If a pair of dimm headlights cost $1600. 00 they should last a lifetime. My car has 60,000 miles. I am thinking of filing a law suit.

60 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 08/01/2002

Head light lenses have turned yellow. Consumer has to use high beams to see. Consumer feels this is a dangerous situation. Consumer states that the bulbs have been changed 3 times, consumer feels that the dealer broke the seals which causes water to seep in.

61 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 08/01/2002

I have the hid headlights in my car. I have had problems with them from day one. Last night, my headlights went out, causing my headlights to completely fail. I was driving down the road and suddenly they went out completely - both low and high beams. No warning whatsoever. I drove with my headlights blinking on and off the entire way. I feel that there should be something installed in these cars to run the low and high beams separately so that if you lose one, at least you have some light. This could have been a very dangerous situation. I hope that the hid headlights are investigated and Ford is required to make them right. They are defective in many ways making them quite a hazard.

62 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 07/30/2002

Manufacture installed halogen (9005) headlights are too hot and have destroyed the housing and reflective materials so there is little to no visibility when using them. Dt.

63 Headlights problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 04/10/2002

Mark viiii's manufactured during the first months of 1997 were fitted with a headlight assembly that incorporated an integral hid "low beam". This appliance was obviously intended to last the life of the vehicle. Access is provided only for replacement of the halogen "high beam" bulbs. In mid-year, Ford redesigned the headlamp to also permit replacement of the hid light source. It no longer supports the earlier model. The only way to restore minimally legal headlight function to my early-1997 Lincoln is replace the entire assembly with a late 1997-1998 fixture. My dealer estimates the cost, including labor, at $1,150 to $1,350 per headlamp. At that price, the headlamps represent 1/3rd the value of the vehicle. This is not the cost of the failed part. This is the cost of Fords failure to support a segment of its fleet and its decision to pass the cost of correcting an obvious design flaw through to consumers. The social cost is that such corporate irresponsibility endangers the public. Few will pay 1/3rd the value of a car to maintain a light bulb. If Ford does not honor its responsibilities, the public will operate the cars illegally. In marketing this car, Ford touted the reliability to be had for $40,000. The reality is that this cars true useful economic life is not defined by the extended-life spark plugs, anti-rust protection or anything else that Ford so eagerly sold, but by the longevity of a light bulb.

64 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 04/04/2002

No summary listed for above vehicle.

65 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 02/06/2002

The front headlights are dangerously dim. It is a safety hazard as in very dark places moving under the speed limit, it can become very difficult to see where you are going. I have just been the owner of this car for two days, but throught the small time that I've owned the car, I can allready see that it is a problem that needs to be resolved.

66 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 01/01/2002

The chrome reflective material on the inside of the headlight assemblies flakes off with age. This vehicle is a 1996 model, and although just over 5 years old, the reflective material has flaked off the inside of the headlights, meaning the bulb only has the base plastic to reflect off, which means output is virtuall nothing. I can send you one of these defective assemblies if you would like to inspect it.

67 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 10/22/2001

Headlights on this model are very poor for the price you pay for this vehicle. . Even the high beams are poor for this vehicle. This is a major complaint for Lincoln owners for this year of vehicle it seems.

68 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 02/14/2001

Headlamp reflector discoloring, causing weak output-Ford will not correct.

69 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

Lowbeam headlamps are not adequate for night time travel. Lights are dim with a blotchy pattern. High beam lamps are adequate. Lamps are accurately adjusted. Ford motor company addressed the problem on certain Mark Viii models with hid headlamps. Ford should recall the Mark Viii models and fit adequate headlamps.

70 Headlights problem of the 1996 Lincoln Mark Viii
