Internal water pump failed causing immediate shutdown of vehicle. This water pump is internal to the engine and requires half of the engine be taken apart to be replaced. This affect all 3. 5 and 3. 7 Ford engines through 2021. Unlike traditional water pumps which are belt driven this one is driven by the timing chain. Thereby when failure occurs the engine shuts down. Coolant also leaks into the oil as a result possibly resulting in engine damage. Ford is fully aware of the defect and refuses to recall. Regardless of age or miles this is a defect especially with vehicles equipped with the internal plastic water pump.
The contact owns a 2007 Lincoln Mkz. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was pulling to one side. There was an abnormal winding noise detected. The window failed to go up when the button was depressed. The engine and air bag warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that there was no wheel bearing work completed on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 210,000. The VIN was not available.
2007 Lincoln Mkz w/ 40k miles well-maintained. On four separate occasions approx 3 months apart, when engine still somewhat cool and within 5 miles of start-up, vehicle is stopped in drive with foot-brake applied. Engine suddenly revs and car begins to accelerate, despite application of hard brake pressure. To avoid collision, driver must shift to neutral or park and turn off engine. Still under warranty. Dealer (1) downloaded and applied computerized updates, (2) changed battery, (3) reviewed all online and Ford moco bulletins but found nothing relevant. Problem is very serious but occurs only intermittently & dealer cannot duplicate. Driver has contacted Ford/Lincoln in detroit and opened a case file to research & track problem. Most recent occurrence on Feb 28, 2010, at 3:00 pm. Car taken to dealership on 03/01. Dealer will have regional Ford engineer examine vehicle.
