2013 Lincoln Mkz. Consumer writes in regards to a problem with the vehicle electric parking brake system. The consumer stated the day he and his wife picked up the vehicle, there was a message on the instrument cluster that read park brake limited function service required. The consumer was informed there was nothing wrong and the message would recycle and would not appear after a day or so. The consumer took the salesman at his word and drove away. The warning did not go away and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. It was determined, there was a problem with the vehicle, and the service manager explained that the fault was with the electric parking brake system and it also adversely impacted the anti-lock brake system.
The parking brake on my Lincoln Mkz will not hold the vehicle on a slope. The dealer and Ford motor company say that there is nothing that cane be done about it. According to them, the brake is designed to function when the transmission is in park. That does not comply with the federal regulations for parking brakes which are quite clear. They state that every combination of motor vehicles must be equipped with a parking brake system adequate to hold the vehicle or combination on any grade on which it is operated, under any condition of loading in which it is found on a public road (free of ice and snow). There is no mention of the transmission or park in that description. The vehicle is quite dangerous. Property and people will be damaged and hurt.
