Three problems related to cruise control have been reported for the 1999 Lincoln Navigator. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
We had driven the vehicle about one mile from the beach to a restaurant, where we parked as usual and entered to dine. We had been in the restaurant approximately 15 - 20 minutes when the waiter announced that there was a "car on fire" in the parking lot. My family and I, along with everyone else in the restaurant, rushed outside, where I was horrified to see my Lincoln Navigator surrounded by police cars and engulfed in flames. I have photos on my phone if necessary. The fire had very obviously started in the engine compartment and probably on the driver's side, as the front tire on that side had melted and was flat, but the other tires were all intact. I have since been made aware of a faulty switch related to the cruise control that can cause these problems. I am almost certain that we took our vehicle in and had that recall dealt with years ago. I will search for paperwork. I remember some repair being done at the dealer, but I cannot remember if it was a recall or just something they contacted us to recommend being repaired. Either way, my parked vehicle was destroyed by fire while I dined.
The contact was unable to have cruise control switch replaced under NHTSA recall 05v388000. He noted that because of a disability he did not allow the dealer to disconnect the switch. When he spoke with the dealer and manufacturer, neither could provide a date of availability for the switch. He has not experienced a problem to date with the cruise control, but he wanted to have the switch replaced as soon as possible because of the risk of a vehicle fire.
The consumers 1999 Lincoln Navigator caught on fire. The vehicle was parked. The ignition was off. The consumer indicated a cruise control problem.
