Steering Tie Rod Assembly Problems of Lincoln Town Car

The contact owns a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a loud metal dragging noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the contact noticed that the front driver side completely collapsed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the tie rod fractured and damaged the front driver side tire. The vehicle was repaired and the defective tire was replaced with a new one. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

The contact owns a 2006 Lincoln towncar. While driving at speeds of 20 mph, the passenger side front tire rod failed. The contact loss control of the vehicle causing a crash. The police were called to the scene. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to an insurance company repair shop for repairs. The failure has not recurred. The failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 65,000.

The contact owns a 1996 Lincoln Town Car. While driving approximately 5 mph, the tie rod detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic and he stated that the failure occurs frequently for that year, make, and model vehicle. He further stated that there was no lubrication in the zerks on the tie rods for that year, make, and model vehicle, which caused the failure to occur. The contact was responsible for paying $229 to repair the vehicle. The intake manifold cracked and all of the water left the exhaust system. 1996 Lincoln Town Car steering went out causing consumer to run into a fence. The steering wheel would turn left and right but the wheel did not respond. Rear air spring were replaced due to excessive cracking. The vehicle steering a suspension performed poorly. The dealer replaced the upper and lower ball joints and the inner and outer tie rods. The right front window regulator broke. The interior light on the left side of the vehicle did not work.

While backing out of the driveway at 2 mph, the front driver's side tie rod snapped. The left front tie rod fell to the ground. The tie had rusted and pitted. Both tie rods were replaced and the upper joint was found bad.

When turning the steering wheel consumer heard a popping noise coming from the front. The vehicle was taken to a body shop for inspection and the mechanic determined that the rights tie rod end needed to be replaced. On March 26, 2004 the left side tie rod end failed while driving.

While pulling out of driveway at 2-3 mph consumer heard a noise, stopped vehicle, and noticed tie rod end were dragging on the ground on the right side of vehicle. Dealer stated tie rods had disconnected. Also, the ball joints were not lubricated and rusted. Both tie rods were replaced.

The consumer states that while pulling out the garage the outer tie rod fell off, unable to steer vehicle. Which could have caused a serious accident if vehicle was on the highway. At 25 mph vehicle suddenly veered left. Consumer had vehicle towed to dealer. Outer tie rod had snapped. The steering linkage and tie rod end falied. The dealer refused to pay for repair of the vehicle.

The lower control arm disengaged from the lower ball joint, and dropped to the ground, tearing a large hole in the front tire, this caused complete loss of control of vehicle. . Also the inner and outer tie rod ends were replaced.

The exhaust converter went bad at the mileage specified. Notice - I also own a 1990 Lincoln towncar, on which the identical right side tie rod wore out. On the 1996 towncar the tierod was so bad that the right side control arm seperated at the tie rod upon pulling into my driveway! if this component would have failed at highway speeds the resulting lack of steering control would have caused loss of life or equipment.

The tie rod failed again after two previous replacements. Also, the ball joints were replaced twice. While going over a speed bump, one could hear the tie rod touching the ground.

While pulling into a parking lot heard a loud noise. Consumet thought that drove over a hole, got out of vehicle, and found out that ball joints had fallen off vehicle without prior warning. The dealer replaced broken lower ball joints and inner tie rod ends.

Vehicle stalled after leaving home driveway, and on freeway for no apparent reason. Ford could not find a solution.

1998 Lincoln towncar. Consumer states that while backing out of the garage the left tie rod dropped from its retainer. The consumer stated the incident would not have happened if the parts had grease fittings.

Squeak in front suspension while turning at low or high speeds. At times needs extra turning of steering wheel to maintain lane through turns or curves. Stabilizer bar also shows signs of excess movement in mounts. Dealer states the problem is the tie rod bushings flexing under pressure. Nlm.
