Three problems related to steering rack and pinion have been reported for the 1999 Mazda 626. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Consumer complained about having problems with power steering . Rack and pinion steering broke, causing loss of power steering. Dealer was contacted.
Consumer heard a noise in steering,on 19 Mar 2001. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer said that steering rack and pinion was too tight. Replaced steering rack and pinion. On 8 April 2001 while driving 65 mph and without prior notice steering rack and pinion broke, vehicle had no power steering. Dealer said that Mazda knew there was a problem with steering bushings, her's were leaking. Dealer replaced steering rack and pinion again. Consumer felt this was a defective part and will break again.
In early 2001,my steering wheel started squeaking loudly. The dealer replaced the rack and pinion steering. The very next month I was driving on a long trip,stopped to get gas,and the engine started smoking. The dealer told me I had driven the car out of overdrive which I had not. In may,2002 I again made a long trip,stopped suddenly for a wreck,with another incident of smoke from the engine. The dealer now says it is the transmission which I have seen noted multiple times as a defect on this web site.
