In early 2001,my steering wheel started squeaking loudly. The dealer replaced the rack and pinion steering. The very next month I was driving on a long trip, stopped to get gas,and the engine started smoking. The dealer told me I had driven the car out of overdrive which I had not. In may,2002 I again made a long trip, stopped suddenly for a wreck, with another incident of smoke from the engine. The dealer now says it is the transmission which I have seen noted multiple times as a defect on this web site.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1998 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 08/01/2000

Steering rack gear broke in two with no warning, car went out of control, crossed highway, down a small embankment and into the trees (narrowly missing an oncoming small truck). My wife was driving and was suffered aggravation to existing back and leg problems. She said she heard a "clunk" and the car took off across the road. At first she thought she hit something in the road to cause the car to go out of control. I checked the car out at the towing companies lot that night and determined that the left front control arm was loose under the rubber boot on the drivers side of the car. I asked the dealer now repairing the car to save any steering parts. They replaced the rack and pinion as a unit and I now have it. I have not disassembled it but it is obviously broke under the boot where the rack exits the rack and pinion housing on the driver's side. Comment: cars shouldn't break like this with only 61,000 miles on them. This car has received regular lubrication maintenance and when I have driven it recently showed no sign of impending steering problems such as clunks, tight steering, road wander, etc. It was just fine until it broke.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 01/01/2000

I own a 2000 Mazda 626 with only 90,000 miles. I have been stranded several times in this car and spent over $3000 parts and labor. I had to replace the catalytic converter, several sensors, master break cylinder, cv boots, and rack and pinion. Now I am having trouble with the transmission and the ac. The mechanic says I need to rebuild the trans and replace the ac compressor. This is another $3000 or more. I am very disappointed in this situation. I plead with you to take action on this. I have checked several web forums and found similar problems. Please, please make Mazda accountable for building such bad cars. Fyi, I am very, very diligent in general maintenance. Thanks for your time. Chris.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1996 Mazda 626

Failure Date: 07/20/1999

Brake failure- purchased used care 6/98, replaced brake pads 10/98, brakes failed 6/8/99 and had to replace brake pads and rotors (front) after accident. Transmission problems- the car began to jump while accelerating from 0-30mph, so I pulled over and parked (7/20/99) and when I put the car in drive it would not go. I had the car towed to a mechanic who told me that I was having transmission problems and advised me to drive the car w/the overdrive off and that is the only way the car moves in drive. I have been having problems with the hearing knocking noises when turning the steering wheel, and my mechanic told me that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Please advise me, because these are very expensive repairs for a car that does not even have 70k miles. Does the manafacturer have any responsibility, because it appears that there have been serveral simular complaints.
