1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2024

I was waiting at a traffic signal to make a left turn, with my foot on the brake. The car accelerated aggressively, with no warning, like the pedal was pushed to the floor. I stood on the brake and shoved the shifter into park - coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection, fortunately my wheels were pointed straight and the car did not race into oncoming traffic. My 96 year old father was in the car with me. Thankfully, my grandchildren were not in the car. You could smell the gas and brakes. It was not driver foot placement, nor was it floor mats. Vehicle has ~ 75k miles, and I am terrified of this happening again. I had driven this car regularly in rush hour stop & go traffic for years with no event like this ever before. Apparently sudden unintended vehicle acceleration is a recognized problem.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

The car slips gears - going from drive to neutral instantaneously without warning. This happens when the car is in motion and in drive. The indicator light says 'd' but the car's gear is in neutral. This has happened 3 times on streets at approx 40mph after making a 3 hour hwy trip.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2017

Front and rear brake rotors warped and pitted at 31,000 miles. We had them replaced in March 2016. In December 2016, (37,000 mls) we had intermittent rumbling in the brakes - particularly braking at 50 + mph. All the new rotors warped and we have had to have them replaced. Have other owners reported similar issues?. Are the brakes for this model of car underspecified? is the steel of poor quality?.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2017

The break pedal is several inches higher than the gas petal in this vehicle. It slows down reaction time when reacting to an emergency situation. I was backing into a parking space. A vehicle went around me. I noticed the vehicle, but when I tried to quickly move my foot to the break my foot got hung up on the break pedal. There was an accident with no injuries. The accident could have been avoided if I was able to hit the breaks. After the accident I sat in the parking lot to analyze and correct my muscle memory and practice moving my foot quickly from gas to pedal. I realized it took much effort, concentration and quite a stretch to get get my foot to the pedal quickly. The pedals should be even, or very close to even. I don't know why someone would think this is better, but if it's a preference there should be an adjustment. Even should be the factory default. It's common sense you can move more quickly strait across than up and over. The unadjustible factory position is ok for standard traffic situations, but when in an unexpected energency situation it slows down your reaction time considerably. Mazda says it's norman and all new cars are this way. I said that doesn't make it correct or any less of a safety concern. Why make a change that slows down reaction time?.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2016

Took vehicle in for 35,00 mile service and was told rear breaks and rotors needed to be replaced. Never herd of such a thing being required at that mileage. Maybe at 60 to 80,000 on rear breaks. Started to check around and found many other complaints about the rear breaks failing prematurely. Haven't had work done yet, wondering if there is a recall in progress?.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

Brakes are prematurely failing. Brakes were replaced at 12,000mi, 20,000mi and now need replacing again. The rotors are warping causing severe vibrations when brakes are applied. Mazda dealers are stating that the driver is at fault for "too much high speed braking" and will not cover the repair of the brake system. Vehicle is currently at 24,xxx mi and the shake is present again.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

I was parking my Mazda cx5 in a spot at a shopping center and when I touched the brake with my right foot and went to push the button to turn off the car, it suddenly accelerated full speed, jumping the curb and smashing into a storefront. I noticed when I started the car (about a mile before the accident), it was making a vroom sound like it wasn't totally getting into gear. I don't know if it's a transmission, brake or accelerator issue - but there is definitely something wrong. I did not hit the accelerator instead of the brake. When I called Mazda they said they had no reports of this being a problem. Please advise. Thank you.
