Mazda CX-5 owners have reported 32 problems related to electronic stability control (under the electronic stability control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda CX-5 based on all problems reported for the CX-5.
This issue has occurred multiple times where I put my car into park (therefore being stationary), press the button to turn off the car and the car does not fully shut down. It appears to be a safety issue with the steering sensor not full recognizing that the car is in park and therefore not shutting off the car completely. In order to get the car to completely shut off, the car has to be shifted from drive to park/actively turning on and off the car sometimes as many as 5-6 times in order for it to fully shut down. I have read dozens of reports of other Mazda owners experiencing the same problem. Cars being unintentionally left on is definitely a safety issue that needs to be looked into.

Was driving when car shut down for a second and traction control, tire light and check engine light came on. I had no power and the rear tires were not spinning. I put the car in park and shut it off. I started it back up and only the tire light and engine light were on and I had power. I was able to drive another 30 miles before having the same problem.
Sat down to start car. After it started I thought I pushed the open function for hatch. . Instead I locked it . After I closed the door I saw that the fob was on passenger seat and all doors locked.

The dashboard indicators suddenly came on all at once while driving on the highway. After pulling over to the breakdown lane and putting it in parl, the engine would not turn off when pressing the on/off button. After arriving at our destination, we needed several attempts of putting it in drive and back to park before the engine finally shut off. But the dashboard indicators remained on and would not turn off, draining the battery all the way down. The following morning, we had to have the vehicle towed to a nearby Mazda service center.

My 2014 Cx-5 will not completely shut off. After putting into park and pushing the button to turn off, the engine will turn off but the aux power to the radio and dash do not turn off. I had to turn the car back on and put the car in gear and back to park multiple times before it will turn off completely.
2014 Cx-5 doesn't turn off properly. I press the start/stop engine button, but it can't sense my car is in park, so the dash and radio remains on, killing the battery as a result. This occurs when parking the car in parking lots and my garage. Getting it to turn off requires turning the engine off/on over and over again while using force to jiggle the shift lever back and forth, which can take several minutes.
The "sbs" system is a dangerous add to the vehicle. It is meant to warn the driver about vehicles suddenly slowing or braking in front of you. Three times this system has caused me near collisions (the system applied the brakes hard and cause the wheels too lock not allowing me to take a safe defensive actions) when the system activated when the "danger" was clearly gone or I took safe action and changed lanes to avoid a collision. The above incidents involved me driving on surface streets at posted speeds of 35-45 mph. This all happened with in a 2-3 week span of time when I had not disabled this feature manually. The road conditions were dry, daylight hours and semi clear days. All the above incidents involved vehicles turning in-front of me. The last time this incident happened was 05/08/19.

My wife complained about how she tried to accelerate and it didn't work one random time while she was driving. I took it around the neighborhood to test it out. I wasn't even out of my block before the incident happened. I was in the middle of a turn and everything just stopped. I was going less than 10 mph when it happened. Several lights came on on the dashboard. The traction control light, the at light, the tpms light, and the check engine light. Something bad happened and this could have killed someone had it happened on the highway. I turned the car off and on and now only the check engine light is on. I was able to drive it again at that point.
Front camera sensor system malfunction Smart city system malfunction forward Smart city brake support malfunction had to go to dealer to have front sensing camera replaced and software updated. Car mileage was 5,858.

When the car is parked, with my foot on the break and the shift lever in "p" position pressing start/stop button the engine shuts off but the ignition remains on. This has caused my battery to die on two different occasion due to this problem.
When I put my car in park, and try to turn off the car, the battery still stays on (radio, etc). I've had my car's selector switch replaced at a cost to me ($300) after the dealer said that was the problem. I am now having the problem again. I am a mom with 2 little kids and I am petrified of being stuck in this car that won't turn off. I have a video of the car acting in this action but am unable to attach it in this forum. I would be happy to email it.
I was driving on a main road and all of a sudden it seems as if the car lost power (2014 Mazda Cx-5 grand touring). I could not accelerate and a lot of the lights on the dash lit up (tpms, traction control, check engine light). Thankfully I was only a mile from home and was able to turn around and make it home, but I could have been in a serious accident with my infant in the car as I was about to get on the highway. I was only able to go about 10 mph, car kept revving, sputtering and vibrating. Once I got home I shut the car off for a few minutes. It starts no problem but same lights keep flashing and I feel the whole car vibrating, I don't feel safe if this car. This is a serious safety issue, car is only 3 years old with 50,000 miles on it, it is not normal for a car to completely lose power to the point where it almost comes to a complete stop. Mazda needs to issue a recall before someone gets into a serious accident because of this!.
When the car is put into park it does not always register completely. The gear is clearly in park, the doors unlock, but when I push the ignition off the radio stays on. This apparently happens to a lot of people and is a faulty at shifter switch (according to the internet). It will often take some fiddling and aggressively putting it into park sometimes 15 times before I actually get it to shut off. Mazda has changed the way they make this part, but haven't issued a recall.
While my wife was driving to drop our children off to go to work all of a sudden the check engine, low tire and traction control light came on. When all lights came on the engine lost power and could not go above 20 mph.
Two weeks after I got the vehicle, I was driving on a highway doing speeds of 45 to 74. The drivers land change assist was not working as a car was right beside me several times I noticed and the light was off. My son mentioned it. Dec 22, 2017 2) I was driving at dusk on cruise control 74 mph and the car suddenly braked and a warning brake! was on the dash. I was in the fast lane with no objects or car in front.
The traction light automatically kicks on even if there is no bad weather. The lights flash on and the car becomes sluggish as if the traction is on. I have to pull over to turn the car off and restart. The engine light stays on for a least 24 hours. This has happened at least 5 times. Last time it happened 12/14/2017 and happened on highway and I couldn't do anything until I got off the highway.
While driving on a slope with bit of curve on a highway when I applied a mild brake to reduce the speed, the car abruptly moved straight left and goes off road. The brake and steering didn't respond immediately for few seconds and the car keep going down off road on a very rough terrain. Luckily it stopped few meters before a sharp fall.

My complaint is identical to complaint # 10913740. I special ordered my Cx-5 & picked it up Feb 2017. Does not shift properly, revs up to 6000 before engaging, can't accelerate when I need to (like merging on freeway or changing lanes). Please see complaint # 10913740 because he describes it better than I, a non "car person" can. I've put my my gas foot to the floor trying to gain some speed so I wouldn't get rear ended and it takes, literally, about 10 seconds to respond at all. The dealer claims it is shifting as designed & says they can't recreate the problem. Car was there @3600 miles & they told me the tech couldn't find anything wrong with the car but did I want a drive with him. I did one, & he tried to tell me that revving to 5000 when on a small incline was normal. This is a lie. I brought the car back again- it was in for 7 days. 2nd time manufacturer involved, & supposedly its engineers would work on it. But all they did is run diagnostics (doesn't anybody actually look at the actual car anymore - computers do malfunction) and what they came up with is that I was engaging the gas and the brake at the same time, causing the car not to shift. First of all, my tiny foot couldn't be on both pedals if I tried; second, my left foot is a clutch foot. I am so used to using it on a clutch only that it dangles where a clutch would be if I hadn't bought this stupid automatic 2016 Cx-5. So now Mazda is saying that their engineers & dealer technicians are infallible and they will do nothing for me. Meanwhile, I am stuck with this pos I bought for $27,000 cash which is not only dangerous but extremely un-fun to drive due to the jerking, revving, etc. , which are very unnerving, and with 5000 miles on car, I should want to drive it. Instead I am driving my nearly 12 year old vw so that I can get places safely and without the jarring problem of the Mazda.
When driving approximately 65mph or sometimes less the tire pressure, traction control, emergency light comes on. The car seems to lose power and shut down. It happens countless time twice with my two-year-old daughter on the highway. When I take it to the mechanic they run diagnostics test and can't pick up any codes. Because its not duplicating any issue they return the car to me after they reset all the computer. But the issue is still not resolved. I would lose power to the car and my brakes are sometimes not responsive. I would coast with my emergency light on until I can stop my car. Sometime my hazards light would frequently flash at a fast speed than stop. I took it to two Mazda dealership to see if they can have resolved the issue but they cannot duplicated what going on. I did some research on my own and found countless complaints about the same issue I'm having and no mechanic can figure out the issue this car is junk. This have started the first week on Dec. 2016 it has been in two shop over the past 4 month. The first shop I took it to had it for a whole month and the second shop had it for two week. At one point when I was told my car was fix I came to pick it up. The car would not start at all it was not even reading my keys. The car does not have 100k miles on it. I don't do a lot of driving. This is hazardous.
No issues leading up to this point with my Cx-5. Went to start the car and all the dash lights illuminated and remained on. As I began to drive, I attempted to use the right hand turn signal and the warning lights flashed rapidly as the electrical system, bluetooth, navigation, and entire engine shut off. I stopped the car, put it in park, and tried restarting. When it did, half of the warning lights were on in park, including the service engine light, and when put in drive the rest of the lights came back on. I tried the right signal again (in park) and the same issue occurred, with the end result of the engine turning off. As I drove with these lights on, new warnings came on and off, including loss of power to my steering(making it more difficult to turn), abs, speed monitoring, tire pressure, blind spot monitoring, horn, and basically anything else controlled electronically. I ran the codes and got long list, with most of them being connected to loss of communication. Some codes were: u0121, p0500, p0685. I took it to the Mazda dealer, and after 2 hrs of diagnostic there were unable to find the problem and said they would need more time (and money, obviously). From reading other blogs/comments with the similar issue, seems to be a faulty ground wire. This is something that is extremely dangerous and seems to be occurring a lot in this model. Mazda needs to address this issue ASAP.
I was traveling about 35mph up a slight incline when the engine lost power and started shaking. The traction control system, tire monitoring, and check engine light all came on at the same time. The engine didn't have any power even when I pressed all the way on the accelerator I couldn't get it to go any faster than 45mph.
During a long holiday trip, while driving down us 19 at 65 mph over the new river gorge bridge the engine started revving / surging, with rpms going up and down, when the car suddenly lost power and decelerated rapidly. The traction control system (tcs) light was on solid and the tire pressure system (tps) light was flashing. We had just left a rest area and were less than a mile down the road from where we pulled onto the highway, just getting up to speed. I may have just turned on the cruise control, but I cannot remember. The weather was warm and dry. The car had about 52,700 miles on it. I put on the flashers and prayed that momentum would carry me over the bridge to where I could pull off, that the semi-tractor-trailer truck barreling down on me would get in the other lane soon, and that no one would rear end me. My mom and my husband were in the car with me. We turned off the car, walked around the outside to look at the tires, looked through the manual, and tried to decide what to do. After about 15 minutes, I started it up again, there were no indicators lit up on the dash, and the car seemed to be back to normal, so we continued our trip. Since then we have driven about 800 miles and it has not happened again. I haven¿t had a chance to contact the dealer yet.
I was traveling at approximately 65 mph on a highway in the right-hand lane when my tire pressure indicator, traction control indicator, low oil indicator, emergency check engine indicator light illuminated. The car appeared to be driving normally so I drove it to a nearby meineke shop where they ran diagnostics & reported they were getting error codes p0571 & p02507. They further advised they were not equipped to fix the problem and I had to go to a Mazda dealership - the closest was 20 miles away. While on my way to the dealership, (again traveling approximately 65 mph on a highway in the right-hand lane), every light remained illuminated. Approximately 10 minutes into the trip, my push-to-start button started flashing yellow, I lost power to the car and my brakes were not responsive. I coasted to the side of the road where I turned the car off, not knowing if it would turn back on. I allowed it to sit for about 5 minutes and attempted to turn it "on" via the push-to-start. It did turn on and allowed me to continue driving, (this time in the break-down lane at 25 mph with my hazard lights flashing). I made it to the dealership where they noted the check-engine light was on. Diagnostics by the dealership / my invoice reveal the "cause" as "61 p0302xrx brake switch, r & r 71 w" and "1 lmin07*5 Mini lp 7. 5 fuse" with a part number of bn7n-66-490. The issue was repaired under warranty as the car is less than 3 years old / less than 25,000 miles. I was on vacation 8 hours from my home with this happened. I had 2 teenagers in the car during the first failure. This could have been really, really bad had I been traveling in the left lane as I believe I would have been rear ended when the car suddenly slowed down and I lost the ability to brake. The out-of-state dealership was wonderful; however I believe this make/model needs to be recalled for this issue.
Engine/active accessories would not shut off. After stopped and put the vehicle into the park position, and pushed the start/stop button to turn off the vehicle, it would not shut off. It sounded like the engine shut off but the accessories were active and fully engaged and beeping. I tried pushing off button several times, restarting /shutting off again, and driving to another parking stall, I had to leave my car unlocked, actively engaged with active accessories fully on in my driveway at home, in shopping centers like target, walmart, the mall, and grocery store. Each time when I returned to my vehicle acc were still on. I had to drive the car a bit and keep trying to park until it shut off. The first time this occurred wa approx July- August , 2015 and my car was still under the 36k/3yr warranty and I was told by the Mazda service advisor that it was just a low key battery and I needed to replace it. He said he did a complete diagnostic check and no problem showed up. It occurred intermittently so I believed him. Recently July 2016- Aug 2016 it actually got worse and happened approximately 5 times within one month. I changed batteries three times on two separate keys. The batteries are not the problem or answer and has not resolved the problem. I think this is might be a transmission, engine, ignition or electrical stability control; I don't know, but definitely not a low key battery prob as I was told by Mazda sevice advisor.
Our vehicle is equipped with the "Smart city braking" feature that automatically prevents collisions at low speed. This system triggers the brakes and brings the vehicle to a stop when an object is detected in front of the vehicle. This system has been triggered by steam clouds coming out of sewer grates and has brought the car to a complete and very unexpected stop several times. No real "object" was behind the steam cloud / yet because of the way the system is implemented it detected an object and activated the brakes. This unexpected braking can quickly bring the car to a complete stop and could result in serious property damage or injury. We pass by an area with multiple sewage grates releasing steam and this system is becoming a safety hazard. We have been lucky enough not to have someone behind us when the system is triggered - but it is only a matter of time before the braking triggers in heavy traffic.

Upon entering the highway a car came up on me very fast, whereupon I floored the gas pedal. The car jetted forward to about 65 mph then suddenly lost all power; like it was functioning on one cylinder. I had to pull over and coast down to my max speed of 5-mph. Even though the pedal was floored I could not get above 1000 rpms and 5-mph. Various warning lights came on, including the tcs and engine lights. All warning lights remained on without flashing. Once I got to a safe place I shut the car down and within one minute restarted it with no sign of a problem. I drove over 100-miles today and nervously had to passe someone, but without problem.
The traction control light came on and the tire pressure monitor light began to flash. It felt like car had downshifted a couple of gears. I lost forward power in all gears (engine revved, but no power to wheels through transmission). Fortunately we were just turning into an alley, so was able to park car off a main street. Finally were able to get it to go into reverse to park it briefly. Turned car off then back on again and all lights on dash were normal and transmission would engage in forward gears again. Drove the 7 miles to my house with no problems. Called dealer and the shop says they have never heard of such a problem. Could have been bad if this happened in rush hour traffic.
While on a very busy road, all of a sudden the accelerator stopped working and my speed began to drop rapidly. At the same time, the traction control warning light and tire pressure warning light came on. It was as if the car had completely lost power. I was able to coast to the side of the road and turn the car completely off. I got out and checked all of the tires and they were fine. When I turned the car back on, the warning lights did not come back on and the car ran normally.
While driving on the left lane of a busy los angeles highway at approximately 55mph, all of a sudden the accelerator stopped responding and my speed dropped rapidly. At the same time, the traction control and tire pressure lights turned on. Immediately, I turned on my hazard lights and pulled into the right lane. Unfortunately, I was in a tunnel with no shoulder. When the vehicle's forward momentum ran out, I came to a complete stop after cruising for approximately 100 feet. After my vehicle stopped, I was able to accelerate again and pulled off the highway. I turned the engine off, checked all tires (all looked normal), and restarted the engine. The warning lights were all off at this point, and the vehicle responded normally. This was a disturbing and dangerous situation. I will describe it at my 10,000-mile service, but it does not seem like others who have had this problem have been able to solicit an adequate response from Mazda.
Driving down the freeway, the automatic transaxle light, traction control, and engine light all came on, and car slowed down and it was like it wasn't in gear. I pulled to the side of the road and had to shut it off and restart it four time before all the lights went off and I could drive it again. The check engine light stayed on, but in ran fine. This also happen about a month ago in town, I only had to shut off and restart once, and all the lights went off and its been running fine since until yesterday. I'm taking it to the dealer in the morning.
I was driving at the listed speed on the new jersey turnpike. Without warning, the vehicle went from sixth gear to fourth, rapidly losing speed in the far left lane. The tire pressure indicator light came on flashing, and the traction control light came on solid yellow. I pulled the vehicle onto the shoulder to check the tires, per the indicator, and noticed none of the tires was deflated. When I restarted the vehicle, the tire pressure and traction lights were solid yellow, along with the engine and "at" transmission light. While there was no noticeable effect on vehicle operation once restarted, I could not use the select-a-gear feature of my transmission. I was told at the dealership where I brought the vehicle that there were issues with the transmission control module, and that software updates were required. The vehicle was returned several days later, with the warning lights resolved, but told that they were uncertain as to whether it was a definitive fix. There have been no recurrences since the original incident.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked with the check engine, traction control, and tire pressure monitor system warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to lester glenn Mazda (101 NJ-37 e, toms river, NJ 08753, (888)422-5041) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer. The failure mileage was 2,000.
