1 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 04/30/2024

Mazda 5 power steering system fails intermittently. The power steering light comes on and steering becomes extremely difficult to steer. Occasionally, the check engine comes on as well and the engine stalls making the situation also vibration in the steering wheel, and when I mean, the steering logs all the way up it locks all the way up, likes flicker and go out, but then it goes away after a few moments.

2 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/17/2024

The Mazda 5 was in a minor collision. The vehicle rear-ended another vehicle in stop-and-go traffic. Both vehicles were in motion, approximate speed of the Mazda 5 was 15mph or less. The front seat airbags deployed. The other vehicle had rear bumper damage but the Mazda 5 immediately had smoke and flames under the hood. Thankfully, all four occupants immediately exited the vehicle to safety. The Mazda 5 quickly burned completely. Police and firefighters came to the scene and everyone agreed that the Mazda 5 fire was not commensurate with the extent of the collision and likely speed of impact. I am concerned there was a major safety defect that caused it to be engulfed in flames.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 11/04/2021

While driving the car started lurching when accelerating. I noticed somebody else mentioned this recently when their car reached 180,000, which is when mine started doing the same thing. When this started happening my transmission light and my traction control light came on and my car was no longer operable. And by that I mean I could not accelerate or shift the vehicle into reverse, park, or neutral. This happened while driving 60 mph on the highway and almost caused an accident as I could no longer accelerate. I had the vehicle taken to a transmission shop and had the transmission control module replaced, but the car continued to have the same problem.

This was driving on the street, while turning and driving . . . I assume this is the power steering and also seemed to be electric because of lights deeming on radio. . . Unknown.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 06/20/2015

Random intermittent stalling of the car starting about 100,000 miles. Car suddenly shuts down while driving, most notably while decelerating but sometimes while cruising along. It actually surged and bucked once recently, (Dec 2021 ~ 180,000 miles), while pulling up to a stop. This is causing me to feel increasingly unsafe in this vehicle as it could cause an accident since I have no control whatsoever during these occurrences. Very frightening and risky. Have feared for my life a couple times given the particular timing of the occurrence.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

13 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/13/2015

This is what is going on with my car. I almost had an accident because of the power steering assist is suddenly lost by reducing my ability to steer the vehicle. Mazda said there was no recall on my car so they cant help me. Mazda is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Mazda3 and Mazda5 vehicles manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008. These vehicles may have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at any time while driving the vehicle. Consequence: power steering assist is suddenly lost reducing the driver's ability to steer the vehicle as typically expected, and increasing the risk of a crash.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 03/16/2013

In this case I left my lights on causing the battery to run down. The problem with this car is when there is no power it is impossible to open the rear sliding doors or tailgate. Only the driver's door opens with a key and you cannot open the rear doors from the inside without power. In the event of an accident that disables the power system these doors cannot be opened and passengers (especially children who are in safety seats) can be trapped. There are 3 rows of 2 bucket seats per row. I feel this car is a death trap and would seriously recommend it not be purchased.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 09/14/2010

Fire in engine compartment, driver's side near front located at the fan controller unit. Electrical high-resistance connection due to improper length of wire in harness causing loose connection in controller unit.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

1. Purchase vehicle used in 2009 with 170,000 kms 2. Since day one, have had issues with door latches / lock and unlock - happens on random occassions and especially in cold/ wet or humid conditions. On several occassions I have been unable to lock / unlock the rear passenger doors using the keyfob or the interior vehicle switches, (I have to unlock/lock the rear vehicle doors manually). 2. Today for the first time, the rear passenger door flew open (while driving) as it did not latched closed. The right side rear sliding door still will not latch closed. . . . . . Thought it was frozen, but dealer says no - not frozen - it's a faulty part / switch causing issue. 3. Asked dealer about recall info - they told me that the recall service for that door latch problem has already been performed on my vehicle by the previous owner. . . . . Therefore, this issue will be my problem to pay for (out of warranty). 3. Intermitent electrical issues with this vehicle. Dashboard lights flicker at times. Gas door pops open for no reason, and at time will not stay closed or will not open. 4. Uneven tire wear. Have owned the vehicle for 9 months and the tires are already bald on the insides only. Vehicle feels like it has a vibration or suspension problem since day one, but the dealer claims nothing is wrong, no problem and alignment is fine? they blaim it on my tires or my driving. But, I have read several postings about these same issues.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA5

Abs and brake warning lights come on when driving in snow. After the car was inactive over night, the lights did not come on start up the next day.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

We purchased our 2007, Mazda 5 new in Jan. 2007 from a local dealership. At a little over 9,000 miles the car began to hesitate and we returned to the dealership for the first service to "fix" the problem. To fast forward, here we are Dec. 31st, 2011 and now we are dealing with not only hesitation and stalling, but now the car actually "bucks" while driving it only adding to the dangers of driving it. This is a well documented problem as we have continued to return it the same dealership each time only to be told it was "fixed". This has become a safety concern, and a financial woe. Why the lack of concern by Mazda and other agencies that know of this problem but have not made Mazda admit the problem and recall these cars before someone is killed. Not everyone is in the position to just buy another car if they seem to have a "lemon". I would really like to know my recourse in all of this. . . . To drive a unsafe car?, to hope I or a family member won't be hurt of killed in it until such time I can trade it in? and then feel guilty that some other person is purchasing my unsafe car? I hope that there is "some hope" by contacting your agency. If nothing else if you won't help me, maybe I can warn someone else about this car.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 10/24/2006

2007 Mazda mx-5 customer states that the car was parked 10 feet from the house and suddenly the car accelerated and crashed into the house** according to the report, the source of the problem may have been electrical.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 05/11/2006

While driving, check engine light comes on and engine dies. Vehicle is stuck in the middle of the road and will not start. Vehicle had to be towed to nearest dealer, but techs have already left for the day. Vehicle is left at the dealer overnight. The next day, I am informed that problem is bad pcm. Module needs to be shipped overnight. Incident happened Thursday. Part won't arrive until Saturday, so vehicle won't be ready until Monday. If this happened while driving on the freeway, there may have been a major accident.
