3 Power Train problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

It's very common in the Mazda 5 cars for the emission components to fail often and affects the fuel economy which causes loss of fuel, money etc. It's also a safety concern as the evap leaks could release fuel vapors to the atmosphere and polluting it. As well as fire hazards due to the fuel leaks. I've noticed many customers approaching the dealer due to this problem which kind of gives us the feeling that this a very common issue with the Mazda5 vehicles.

When put into 1st or 2nd gear, this vehicle drives in reverse. It caused our vehicle to unexpectedly back into a major highway. After getting off the road in 3rd gear, multiple drivers have tested this with the same result. . . The vehicle travels in reverse while in 1st or 2nd gear. There was no sign of this prior to this incident, it happened suddenly and nearly caused a major accident.

6 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/05/2017

Occasionally (4 times now) when stopping or starting out (foot on brake, car in drive) the accelerator races full throttle, like I stomped on accelerator, for a few seconds. I have to press on the brake full force and/or put it in neutral. Scarey!!! called dealer, but was told they were not aware of any problems. No offer to check it out. Emailed Mazdausa on jan2 but no response other than automated response showing they received my email. Took it to repair shop to check for codes - no codes.

8 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 02/19/2013

At a full stop with my right foot on the brake, the car jumped (as if being hit from behind) and the engine began revving as if I had my foot pressing down as hard as possible on the accelerator. I had to put the car into neutral and turn the car off to get it to stop. This has happened several times since February at random intervals ranging from 4 months to 1 week apart between incidents and in all different types of weather. Mazda's computer is telling them that pressure is being applied to both the brake and the accelerator at the same time, and therefore they say they cannot come up with any other cause than that I am putting my foot on the accelerator at the same time as the brake. This is not the case. I video-taped the last occurrence. The car got up to 7000 rpm and the sudden force of the car jumping into gear actually caused the car to slide even though I had been at a full stop (this instance was in icy conditions). I video-taped the fact that my foot was not on the accelerator, but because my phone does not have a light on it, this was too dark to discern with the dark interior of my car. My husband has also been in the car when this has happened and has seen that my foot is not on the accelerator. The local Mazda dealer also rode with me to ascertain that I am not a two-footed driver. Mazda is throwing their hands up in the air because their computer will not produce a code to identify the problem, will not offer a rental car, will not offer to replace the car, and will not keep the car long enough to reproduce the problem (which they say is the only way they can identify it and fix it). I even asked them to keep the car the last time it happened until they could reproduce it, and instead they installed a black box device which basically ended up telling them nothing except that force was being applied to the accelerator.

The contact had to shut off the vehicle for a few moments in order for the vehicle to begin to perform normally. The dealer attempted to diagnose the failure but was unable to determine the cause. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 98,000.

10 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Around 26000 miles, I noticed my 2010 Mazda 5 started showing difficulty shifting. There are 2 noticeable times when it occurs, 1) when travelling between 30-40mph and you remove your foot from the accelerator for 5 seconds or so and then depress the accelerator to increase speed, the car fails to respond until you almost push the pedal to the floor, and 2) when accelerating out of a turn or when traffic light turns green as you approach slowly, the car fails to respond when you depress the gas pedal to accelerate. I reported issue to dealer and the standard answer "unable to duplicate" was given and it was stated by the dealer that a transmission flush is recommended at 25k-30k miles for the Mazda 5. I checked the maintenance schedule for a 2010 Mazda 5 and there is no indication of any inspection or replacement of transmission fluid for the first 60k miles of the vehicle. . Read more...

11 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 03/14/2007

2007 Mazda5 with automatic transmission stalls ocassionally when accelerating from a stop at traffic lights. Happens most often when starting on an uphill grade. Dealership was unable to observe the problem and therefore unable to fix it. In addition, the engine intermittenly loses power for about 1 second while driving at approximately 20 mph. This happens about 4-5 time per week, never more than once on the same day. It usually happens within the first 1/2 mile of driving the car. The dealership was also unable to observe this problem or fix it. I expressed my concern to the dealership and to Mazda customer assistance that stalling while pulling into traffic could be a life threatening occurrence, but they insisted that nothing could be done until the problem worsens to the point where a mechanic can observe it. The fact that many others have mentioned the same problem on online user forums did not seem to make a difference. I do not feel safe driving this otherwise wonderful vehicle.
