2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/05/2017

Occasionally (4 times now) when stopping or starting out (foot on brake, car in drive) the accelerator races full throttle, like I stomped on accelerator, for a few seconds. I have to press on the brake full force and/or put it in neutral. Scarey!!! called dealer, but was told they were not aware of any problems. No offer to check it out. Emailed Mazdausa on jan2 but no response other than automated response showing they received my email. Took it to repair shop to check for codes - no codes.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

After repeatedly going to various mechanics to get a diagnosis throughout the years, they were all unsuccessful to find any report through the vehicle's computer. However, my car's engine is constantly revved up even when applying the brakes an slowing down causing it to jerk forward. This occurs suddenly and randomly when I am going at speeds below 20 mph including while on idle. If I neither apply the brakes nor the accelerator, it will still drive forward at 3 mph in rhythmic jerky waves. We took the vehicle to the local Mazda dealer for a key replacement when we first purchased it, and I believe we reported the problem there first, but after the ridiculous service we got, I never wanted to return there again. This has been an ongoing issue since the beginning.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 06/05/2010

I was pulling into a hotel parking lot which happened to be a steep slope. I stopped mid way up the hill to see where I needed to check in and park. When I took my foot off of the brake, I started rolling backwards. I pushed the accelerator but nothing happened, my car continued to roll backwards. I pushed the brake pedal but it wouldn't allow me to push it down. It was stuck. Then my check engine light came on as well as my brake light. As I reached for the emergency brake my car stopped because I ran into a light post and a tree damaging my car. I was able to get the car into park and shut off the engine. I turned the car back on and the lights were no longer on. I was able to drive it and park it. I assessed the damage which were both rear quarter panels were damaged as well as a few dents and scratches. Since it was the weekend I waited till Monday morning to call my dealership. They said they wouldn't touch it without me reporting it to Mazda corp. First. I called Mazda and explained what happened. They told me I would have to run it through my insurance company since there was damage to my car. I called my insurance company the next morning and reported it. I had to pay my deductible plus some money from my insurance company to get it fixed. I asked for Mazda to check the event data recorder to see why this happened. I'm not sure if this was done because it sounded like they only checked the diagnostics and said there was nothing wrong with my car. I don't believe I should have had to pay for my car because it was faulty. It is still under warranty.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 09/14/2009

While driving, the vehicle would suddenly stall. It happened at low speeds up to speeds near 50mph. Everything would be fine, but then it was like there was a stumble and the engine would shift to idle, causing the vehicle to a stop. The engine would not cut out, but would only idle. If we turned the car off, waited a minute, then restarted the car, it would drive fine (until the problem repeated itself at another random time). The dealer made several attempts to repair. They first changed the throttle body, but then it happened again to us within 30 minutes of the repair. They next changed the accel pedal, but it again happened as we pulled out of the dealer across traffic leaving us vulnerable to a severe accident. Finally, they replaced a ground wire for the accel pedal and the problem "seems" to be resolved. I say "seems" because the car does not drive like it did before the problems started. There still seems to be a stumble, but no stalling. Since the car does not stall, we are not taking it back to the dealership, but we get very nervous each time we feel a slight stumble. This problem seems similar to the "drive-by-wire" problems experienced by Toyota drivers and has potential for a severe accident, so I thought it was worthy of reporting.
