I was driving home from work today. I was driving on a road not far from my home and going about 40 mph. My foot was not on the gas but the car began to suddenly accelerate. It suddenly accelerated to over 50 mph. I began to brake, but it felt like I was trying to brake at the same time someone was pressing hard on the gas pedal. I put the car in neutral and pressed the brake as hard as I could. It was a definite hard push on the brake -- as if I had lost power brakes. There were cars ahead of me stopped in the road because of an accident. I managed to stop -- but barely. I almost hit the car in front of me after finally stopping my car when it surged forward several feet while my foot was firmly on the brake. I managed to get my car on the side of the road and put it in park. The engine continued to rev up and down as if I was about to start drag racing even though I did not have my foot on the gas pedal. This continued until I turned the engine off. When I turned the engine back on, the revving had stopped. A similar, but briefer incident happened a few weeks ago. I had to put the car in neutral, brake as hard as I could and use my emergency brake to stop the car. This issue happened the first time about 3 years ago. I almost ran into the plate glass window of a store. When I was able to stop the car and put it in park, the engine revved repeatedly (very, very high that time) and did not stop until I turned off the vehicle. I took the car to the Mazda dealership. They called in engineers and could never replicate the problem and said it was unlikely to ever occur again. Well now it has occurred twice in the past few weeks. This is an incredibly dangerous safety issue. Someone will be hurt or killed. I see that the Mazda tribute has been recalled for a similar issue. People complain on the internet of this issue with the Mazda 6. Please help!.
The car unexpectedly accelerated with my foot of the gas pedal. I was driving around a curb at about 20 mph and all of sudden it increased to 40 mphs, and the rpm needle jumped up and down, and finally it got stuck at 3rps. I was on a flat surface and the vehicle continued to accelerate and make loud engine sounds. I tired to brake but the car continued to accelerate, I kept driving until I was able to let other cars pass, and pull over and put it in neutral. In neutral the car still accelerated, and made noises, that I then put it in parked. However in park the rpm was still stuck at 3 and the mph needle bounce between 0-40 mph. Finally after a minute the needle drop to 0 mph, and I turned the car off and restarted it. After waiting 5 minutes I restarted the car and it acted like nothing ever happen. The next day after driving 15 minutes it repeated the same activity. I have contacted my dealership and set up an appointment. Apparently this is a common problem with Mazda between 03-05 with acceleration issues. However the is very dangerous, for me and my children and other drivers on the road. This could cause a accident or even death. This is something Mazda needs to take seriously and needs to recall and repair to correct the problem.
