1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Mazda mpb. The contact stated that he was unable to remove the key from the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the gear selector lever needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 96,000.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I was driving my 2002 Mazda Mpv minivan with 91,000 miles on it on the freeway and when I tried to accelerate, it would not shift into higher gear. It seemed to go into neutral and I began loosing speed. I have done all maintenance as was suggested in the handbook by Mazda. In fact, Mazda has done all of the maintenance. This was incredibly dangerous as there were no warning signs. I was told by Mazda that it needed a new transmission and Mazda refused to accept any responsibility for this even though it is a known issue with this model and year.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2010

I own a 2002 Mazda Mpv. It has about 94,000 miles on it. Recently while driving the car, I was trying to increase speed but the car would not go faster, instead the car began to redline and decrease in speed. When I applied pressure to the gas pedal the car was running but did not move. I had to pull over on the shoulder of the highway, luckily I was in the slow lane otherwise I may have caused a severe accident. There was no indication the car had any problems, no warning light or system failure light at all. The car was towed to a local shop and I was told the transmission was shot. Cost to repair $2,600. After researching this problem I found that there seems to have been a recall Mazda of japan for 81,000 vehicles. Also it is the number one problem cited for Mazda Mpv vans some with far less mileage than mine. I am very upset about this incident as I was traveling with my two young children in the car at the time and was fearful for their safety.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

We have a 2002 Mazda Mpv (first owners) with 104k; followed all manufacturers recommendations for maintenance. Died on the way to work this morning, had to be towed to shop. They want 6000$ to replace transmission (with a rebuilt one). I'm shopping around. The car isn't worth 1/2 that for trade-in. We have had the trans module replaced about 3 years ago.

5 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2008

I was driving our 2002 Mazda Mpv, with only 59000 miles on it. We purchased the vehicle new in 2002. In this incident, I suddenly found that while driving at about 38 mph, I tried to accelerate (to 40 mph), and the vehicle decelerated instead. I repeatedly tried this, and the vehicle kept slowing instead of accelerating. We turned the car off, changed drivers in the shoulder, and repeated the same problem. There were no warning lights, just worsening of the problem, with extreme slowing. We managed to get the van to a service station. We were just informed that the transmission needs to be replaced. Something apparently snapped in the transmission, with no warning. The car will go in reverse, but will not go forward. We were headed for the highway that day, and are fortunate this happened where it did, not on a highway, but on a smaller road right near a service station. We are very lucky and extremely frustrated with Mazda. This severe and potentially dangerous problem could happen with no warning, on a well-maintained vehicle with relatively low mileage. The engine is being rebuilt for $2400, and we have been able to borrow a car for the duration of the repair. And by the looks of it, many owners of the 2002 Mazda have had the same problem!.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2008

We have sent in our Mazda Mpv 2002 van into 3 different dealerships six times for the same transmission issues. Everyone except one gave us a could not replicate problem answer. However, the one dealership that could replicate the problem said it was the mechanics of the transmission and we should not worry but logged in an incident during our warranty in case we had problems in the future. They also indicated that it would be handled as a warranty problem when and if the problem became worse and needed repaired. Now, the problem occurs all of the time with 3,4,5 gears shifting hard. Mazda has not corrected this issue and wants to charge me money for the repairs. After consulting two transmission specialist, they said it needed a rebuilt or replaced transmission.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

We have 83000 miles on our vehicle. We have taken our vehicle in for the required check ups at 20k, 30k,,for issues concerning air sensors. We had not received any caution by the dealer that we may have issues with any part dealing with the powertrain even after the dealer "26 point inspection" they always talk about. My family was driving from a doctor appointment, and the transmission started jerking in and out of gear. We called the dealer, and were informed that the car could have a transmission issue and not to drive it. Nobody was injured through the jerking motions of the car, but luckily, we were in our neighborhood when it happened. It was towed to our dealer for a diagnosis, and we were informed that it needed a new transmission.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2007

Vehicle has 79600 miles on it. I am the original owner and have maintained the car well. The transmission has completely failed and needs to be rebuilt to the tune of $3500. Mazda seems to be taking thier time getting in touch with me. They had denied that this is a cronic problem. This will be the last Mazda I will own if the Mazda USA cannot live up to the fact that the transmissions are faulty.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2007

The transmission in my 2002 Mazda Mpv with 62,000 miles on the odometer, failed while driving in the carpool lane on the 405 freeway in orange county California. Fortunately I was able to pull the car over through 4 lanes of traffic to the shoulder. The failure occurred with no warning and no lights came on the dash. Had this happened in another situation it could pose a very serious safety threat.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2007

Transmission in 2002 Mazda Mpv failed on 19 in summersville wv. Van serviced at Mazda dealer and transmission fluid flushed at 88000. Failed at 97,000. Had to push off of highway. Extended warranty is only covering part of cost.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2007

I was driving my 2002 Mpv ES with 60,000 miles on it when it suddenly would not go into drive(auto trans). I tried putting it in 2 and 3 with the same results. I paid $780 a week ago at the dealership to replace coils 1, 2 ,3 and now this!.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2007

Driving along with my 2 1/2 year old daughter on the freeway in very fast and very busy traffic conditions the van suddenly and without warning lost all power transfer to the wheels. The red lines raced up into the red, but the van would not be propelled any further by engine power. I had to coast nearly a mile or more on shoulder less rush hour highway, all the while transitioned lanes to the first exit I could access, then as momentum decreased I had to step out of the car into extremely heavy traffic and push a further 30 yards to the first turn-off, drivers door open, baby screaming with 55 mile an hour traffic screeching and swerving around me and the blind corner I was hidden behind. The van has 54,000 miles on it and is well looked after may I add. Now Mazda says "not their problem" but look at all the other people on here with the exact same story! low mileage 2002 Mazda Mpv drops transmission with no warning in busy traffic. Its a wonder no one has been killed or injured. I feel lucky for me and my daughter. They are now attempting to charge me with $4000. 00 for a rebuilt transmission, 1/4 of what I paid for the car used 10 months ago. Yes the car is out of warranty, but every manufacturer worth their salt offers "good will" programs for things like this, not Mazda. Last Mazda I buy, not only is my most precious possession, my family, left in harms way but then they try to soak you afterwards. Don't buy a Mazda that's my advice. Why no recall by the way?.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2007

At just over 80,000 miles the transmission on my Mpv stopped shifting into higher gears. There was absolutely no warning except for a few times when the transmission seemed to feel like it was slipping, certainly no warning lights or messages showing it needed to be serviced.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2006

At 68,000 miles, the transmission on my Mazda Mpv totally failed on a busy interstate highway outside of chicago. It was towed in and needed a totally new transmission at a substantially high cost. The vehicle was 18 months out of its 3 year warranty. This is apparently a "known issue" for Mazda Mpv transmissions. I will never purchase Mazda again.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2006

Complete and immediate failure of transmission on highway going 65 mph of 2002 Mazda Mpv with 39167 miles followed by failure of failure of ignition coil. Mazda did offer to go in with half of the charge at $1624. 27. Ignition coil was a 396. 03 charge.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2006

: the contact stated while driving at 20 mph on neighborhood roads, the vehicle began to lurch as if braking very hard, and nearly causing a crash. The vehicle was taken to 3 different service dealer mechanics, who could not duplicate the problem. The dealer determined the entire transmission should be replaced.

17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2004

I bought a Mazda 2002 Mpv lx used with 9k miles on it. It has a transmission problem similar to those I have reviewed on your site, intermittent hard shifting between first and second in the automatic transmission. Took it to the dealer and they found a code reference an electrical adjustment. Supossedly fixed, not! took it back and was told the 2002 Mpv has hard shifting. So does my old police baton! I am taking it back and talking to the owner to get the trans fixed or replaced. If they will not do that then I will go to 3 reputable transmission repair stores and get it in writing and file a consumer fraud complaint with the state of FL. Can you look into this being that there are more than one transmission complaint listed and all are similar and we get brushed off?.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2004

Automatic transmission "bucks" or otherwise shifts violently into the next gear (any gear, pick one). My Mpv currently has 26,000 on it. We have been experiencing this problem for over a year, but haven't had the time to take it in. Finally took it in to the dealer. Service manager stated (with a straight face) to me that the brakes (calipers) were creating "drag" and the violent shift would occur when reaching the threshold of power to go into the next gear. He recommended that we have the brake pads replaced and the rotors "turned" (for $250). We did not have the work done, but picked up the car. The shifting was a lot better when we picked up the car. That lasted about a week. Now it is starting that jolting again. We took the car to big o for oil change, tire rotation and specifically asked them to check the brakes. Rotors and calipers are fine and the brake pads only have 25% wear on them. Now, I am blonde, but it seems to me that if the brakes were creating "drag" there would be a much higher percentage of wear on the pads, or there would be something indicating that the calipers were malfunctioning, especially after 26,000 miles. In fact, the big o manager thought my husband was a little daft in asking about brakes having any such affect on gear shifting.

19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2004

Extremely rough upshift and downshift which the dealer says there is no fix for. I have taken it in three times in the past year to two different dealers to correct the transmission and it is still not fixed. Absolutely ridiculous.

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2003

I have had trouble with the Mazda Mpv transmission of my car since I purchased it in September of 2002. The transmission has intermittent rough shifts/jolts. The dealer has tried to make adjustments and also changed the transmission fluid at 20,000 miles (which I was charged for), but the problem continues. This is the worst-feeling automatic transmission I have ever felt, so I purchased an extended warranty because I do not believe that the transmission will last to 100,000 miles.
