2004 Mazda Mini van the ignition coils are continually having to be replaced-I am on the 4th time having one of them replaced over the pass 4 years.
2003 Mazda Mpv. 70,276 miles. 3/8/11 - started running rough. Two rear coils bad; dealer repaired all three rear coils because (according to dealer) once one goes, they all go. ($855. 01) one week later - 3/16/11, rough idle and odor of gasoline. Check engine light goes on. 70,339 miles. Dealer replaced all 3 front coils. ($463. 76) I am told this is a *common problem* with Mpvs. Dealer told me he has seen many of them coming in, and it was a good thing I was having it taken care of promptly. If I did not, the catalytic converter goes bad as a result. . . Cost of replacement of the $1,000. Note: I overheard the service manager on the phone telling a customer the spark plug boot goes bad first, and causes some kind of electrical problem that damages the coils.
The gas struts to hold up the back hatch keep blowing and the hatch will fall down and hit you in the head.
Mazda Mpv spare tire carrier. This device lowers and raises the spare wheel from under the body of the car. The problem is that it is so poorly designed that it breaks after one use. After talking to salvage yards all the parts they have also broke. This has happened in two of my family cars. Also the wire to lower the tire isn't long enough so the tire crashes on persons hand.
The consumer states that the odometer was rolled back on the vehicle to 33,764 miles. Consumer has not contacted the police about this matter. Consumer ran a carfax and found this information about this vehicle. Consumer has not contacted the dealer or the manufacturer.
The consumer smelled a strong chemical odor in the cabin of the vehicle. The smell caused the consumer to feel nauseous and made it impossible to drive the vehicle. The dealer replaced the leather seat and other accessories yet the smell was still present.
Leak in 2000 Mpv that dealer stated was due to "outside influence" and would not be covered as a manufacturer's defect. Dealer told us that the leak (which ruined our floor boards, rugs and wiring) was due to parking the car outside, which led to dirt and leaves getting into the hood, (or somewhere) clogging the drainage system . We do park the car outside in a clear driveway. (we were not aware that you had to own a garage to own a Mazda). We have never had an accident or made any modifications to the car. It just started to leak uncontrollably. They also refused to fix the spare tire holder(which is under the base of the car) which according to the dealer, broke on the first use. (we simply followed the instructions in the manual when removing the tire from the holder) we can not put the tire back, and were told that it would cost us 480. (at least) to fix it. Our car is 6 months and 5,000 miles out of warranty and will be ruined the next time it rains as water pours into the front of the car into the floorboards, after soaking the wiring. I suppose we will have to move and buy a garage. . . .
Mpv fog light caught fire after we had the recall work done on it through the dealership we purchased it from. The fire occurred on 8/25/03 and the recall work was done back in June. My family was in the van at the time of the fire and luckily no one was injured.

The front cup holders will fail to hold a drink when the vehicle makes tight turns. The cup holder uses an adjustable lever to hold the cup in place. This lever offers insufficient resistance to hold the cup securely. This failure can lead to drinks falling on the floor which can cause a safety hazard for the driver. Mazda has redesigned the cup holder in the 2002 model, but has failed to offer the updated cup holder to previous model year vehicles. (2001-2000) dt.
