1 Equipment problem of the 2023 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 09/18/2024

Dear, I’m writing to address the delayed response to the recall for my Mazda mx-5, which began on September 18. It has been nearly two months without any remedy or guidance from the manufacturer. As I rely on this vehicle daily for business purposes, this prolonged delay has caused significant disruptions. I urge NHTSA to assist in expediting a resolution with Mazda to minimize further impact on my work. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

2 Equipment problem of the 2008 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 10/12/2019

When it rains water will pool in passenger side floor board. Mazda deals suggests adding drains and filters that are not part of original vehicle design. (this issue is due to a design flaw and no other reason), this happens regardless if car is moving or stationary. This has been an on-going issue since I purchased the vehicle in 11/2012. . Door seals and window seals are not damaged.

4 Equipment problem of the 2008 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

Water accumulation in footwell/plugged soft top drains. Mazda has a service bulletin of how their company can fix it but must be paid by owner. I spoke to alisha at Mazda and it is not recalled or a service program. On the internet many are complaining about this. This is a known problem to Mazda and should be covered since their fix for this is adding a drain valve assembly, several drain covers and valves and filters.

5 Equipment problem of the 2017 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

When using android auto while the vehicle is in motion the touchscreen is disabled which means I need my eyes on the screen to watch the selection move by turning the selection wheel rather than just touching the screen. I think this is much more of a distraction. Other car models allow touchscreen use.

6 Equipment problem of the 2016 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

Car was in motion, while driving the car the red key light on the engine start button started flashing. When we got home the car would not turn off. Also couldn't shift the car. Finally got the car to turn off and when we started the car again the check engine light came on. Car dealership found several codes stored, but could not find the problem. Believe this is a serious safety issue with red warning lights start flashing when driving, car would not turn off and we could not shift the car.

7 Equipment problem of the 2016 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 10/21/2017

Blind spot monitoring system would disengage ( come off) when you are driving while another vehicle is within range ( close on your left or right side. No light indicates on dash that the system is off nor any warning or beeps is heard if you activate you change lane signals. This has happen randomly at least three times all similar. Even if you depress and release the switch for this feature while driving ( to turn it off or on) it does not reactivate this feature nor is their any indication in the dashboard. After stopping and turning off the ignition and restarting the car then this feature is activated. . So far this has happened on both a busy city highway and secondary roads. While vehicle is in motion. This matter has been reported to Mazda USA and the dealer garden city Mazda in NY state. Last instant was 10/21/17.

Headlights shake. Mirror covers on visors broke, never even used mirrors. Burns oil.

9 Equipment problem of the 2016 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 03/16/2016

We brought the mx-5 into the dealer for the 5k oil change and checkup with a complaint that the inner liner comes unsnapped and partially blocks visibility of the rear window when you put the top down and later put it up. Mazda service did not make note of this in the service and didn't fix it. I asked the service advisor about it who then brought the car back in and a tech "fixed" it in a few minutes. When I got home¿. Same thing. Once you put the top down and then later put it up the inner liner unsnaps and hangs down partially blocking your rear view. I just booked the 10k oil change and received notice (email) back from Mazda noting the oil change but not the rear window issue, only a note saying check service other. This is not an uncommon issue. I have found sites on the web indicating others have the same issue. It seems there may be a TSB # 001166 (not sure if it's USA or uk) related to this issue with parts replaced : n247-r1-280 protector-top, lh 1 lh and n247-r1-230 protector-top, rh 1 rh. If there is a TSB for this why isn't it listed on any formal Mazda sites and why is the Mazda dealer ignoring it? I emailed the Mazda dealer back to ask that my specific complaint be added to the service notes. I don't want to pay for a new roof when the warranty runs out at 36k miles !!!!.

10 Equipment problem of the 2006 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

Same problem as many of the other people on this website. The drainage system for the canvas convertible is problematic. Having water in your vehicle as well as in the trunk. Could this cause electrical problem? not sure. It can certainly cause black mold , and I have respiratory difficulties as it is! in my case, the inside of car was musty for many months (6+). I park my car under cover, so it didn't get enough water in to notice the water other than by the smell. But each time I looked for the source and could not find any moisture. . . But that musty smell persisted, and I didn't even think of it more, other than to get airfresheners, and ride with top down when I could. Looking back, this was probably the cause constantly aggravating my breathing problems. One day I visited my brother in florida, I was unable to park under cover, so I parked outside on driveway. I came out the next day, the entire inside of the car had about 4-6 inches of water in it (I was on a slight incline so the trunk filled about 6 and the inside about 4) , much of my stuff in the trunk was ruined! I dried up as much as I could, had it shampooed and when I got back to texas, I brought the car in, and the problem was the drainage system. . . . And of course my car was infested with black mold which is a major health hazard to people with lung issues, (as well as those who don't have lung issues!) I had to replace all the carpet, all the padding, have all the black mold removed, replace all my belongings that got ruined, and pay to have the lines "flushed" so it didn't happen again. . . . . Now I am finding out on here they knew about this and have done nothing to correct it? I guess my next car will not be a Mazda. All that work was not cheap, and I had no choice but to fix it or it would continue to be a detriment to my health. . . I guess the next step will to be speaking with an attorney.

11 Equipment problem of the 2007 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

I first noticed the floor under my drivers seat in the back was soaked. I took it to a Mazda dealer immediately and was told that the drainage system was probably backed up with debris causing the water to back up inside the car and it would cost approx. $700. 00. It seemed to happen when my car was exposed to heavy rain. Also whenever I went to a car wash. The problem seemed to have gotten worse and I came home to find the inside of my car filled with water in the back and the front under the driver's and passenger seats. This problem can lead to a more serious problem if not fixed immediately because eventually rusting will occur under the carpeting which could be a potential danger to me as the driver. I do not feel safe driving this car with this reoccurring water problem. I have asked around as to how to fix this problem and have had no resolution with Mazda. I do not feel that this is a normal wear and tear issue but more one of a manufacturing flaw. When I spend thousands of dollars on a sport car I do not expect for a problem such as this to occur and then not be dealt with with expediency. If the flooring rots from rust, my seat could fall through while I'm driving. I would like this to go on record now as I am still getting no resolution. I don't think this is something that I should have to pay out of pocket to get fixed.

12 Equipment problem of the 2006 Mazda MX5

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Excessive flooding in cabin on drivers and passenger side as well as trunk. Mazda has since modified their roof drain system as this is a known defect. Once the model is out of factory warranty, they refuse to replace parts with updated parts to fix the problem. The convertible roof itself does not leak. It is the design of the roof drainage system. Mazda needs to be held accountable for fixing all of these cars. The new parts include debris filters and ribbed valves which reduce baffles getting stuck shut in the drain lines.
