2020 Mx5 rf club edition with 65k miles lost engine power while driving in rush hour traffic. Car would not re-start, required a tow, and I was left stranded and without transportation. Since car was inoperable it was towed to nearby reputable mechanic and per the mechanic fuel pump has failed. Same fuel pump has been recalled by other manufacturers and hundreds of thousands of 2018-2019 Mx5's have been recalled due to a similar defective fuel pump. I believe my car is effected by a defective fuel pump and should be included in the recall and replaced by the manufacturer free of charge. Part can be inspected. Part has been inspected by an independent service center. No warning signs prior to the issue occurring, battery and engine lights appeared as vehicle lost power.
There were two separate incidents on the same day, Sunday, December 4, 2022. I rounded a corner on a city street (goodfish farm road), which is parallel to the wal-mart shopping center in albeny, oregon. Usa. When I applied the brake the car “floored it. ” I pushed the brake pedal hard with my right foot and car rushed a little but came back under control, it scared me and I did a mental note to check the floor pads. I pulled on into the larking lot without incident and went on with my shopping. About an hour later I got back into the car drive about 11 miles hone in it without incident until I drive down my driveway, applied the brake to stop at my house, and the car repeated it’s performance. This time it was in gravel, so it dug through about 8 inches of top gravel and dug out 10” inch bedrock from the driveway.
When I filled the gas tank the next day there was the smell of gas inside the vehicle which persisted as I drove. I took it to my fiat dealership which maintains the vehicle and they have been unable to identify the source of the gas smell. They have been working with madza for six weeks and no solution can be established. There was a recall on the 1999 models for a similar problem, however my VIN number was not part of the recall.
I have a 2006 Mx5 miata and there is a strong fuel smell and cap will not stay tight also getting check engine light. I contacted Mazda and they said there is a known defect in the filler neck and cap will come off. Fuel sloshes out and I replaced cap with an updated one. Still comes loose leading the the filler neck issue. They will not repair as its not a recall. My concern is that it is a fire hazard and they will not repair a defect that is known to happen.
Check engine light comes on every few weeks, various obd codes: p0455, p2402, p2407. This model has a know emission control system problem. Selling dealer replaced filler cap twice and a purge valve before the dealership closed. Some filler pipes are known to be defective. Other dealers are not interested without charging 3 figure amounts for 'diagnosis. I have complained to Mazda, they refer me to a dealer, dealer wants big bucks to 'diagnose' a known defect which I'm not willing to pay. I just want the defective car fixed. It has 28,000 miles on it, and the check engine light has been on perhaps 50 times. I also complained to the selling dealer about the clutch being hard to disengage, and was told "it was normal. " I find today there is a service bulletin on that same issue.
