I am filing this complaint regarding a manual transmission failure on my 2017 Mazda mx-5 miata (VIN: [xxx] ) at 55,000 miles. The failure occurred without warning while driving, causing immediate and significant transmission malfunction. Mazda issued technical service bulletin 05 [xxx] c addressing this exact defect — defective synchros in 2nd and 3rd gear causing grinding, inability to engage gears, and transmission failure. My VIN falls within the TSB coverage range. The cutoff is sequential number xxx and my sequential number is xxx, placing me within the affected range. Despite this documented defect and my vehicle being under Mazda's powertrain limited warranty at time of failure (under 60,000 miles), Mazda refused full coverage. The dealer offered only 50% goodwill. I escalated to the Mazda regional representative, who also declined full coverage and redirected me back to the dealer — evasive given the documented nature of this defect. This is not isolated. Multiple 2016–2017 mx-5 owners have reported identical failures, and a Mazda engineer publicly acknowledged on video that weak transmission tolerances cause gear teeth to shear under load. Active petitions are calling for a formal recall. While I was able to drive to the dealership, this failure occurred without warning. A similar failure at highway speeds or in a less favorable situation could result in complete loss of vehicle control, posing significant danger to the driver and surrounding traffic. I request that NHTSA: (1) investigate this defect across all 2016–2017 mx-5 miata manual transmission vehicles, (2) determine whether a formal recall is warranted, and (3) require Mazda to honor full warranty coverage for vins within the TSB range. I have retained all documentation and am prepared to provide additional information upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Driving vehicle on highway could not get the manual transmission into 3rd gear. Had to double clutch in order to do so. The vehicle only had 5,700 miles. The transmission produced a loud whining sound that could be heard outside the car. Took vehicle to dealership in which entire transmission was replaced.

Mazda miata model years 2022-2024 with manual 6sp transmission are experiencing a large number of failures at low mileage. Some owners are reporting 2 failed transmissions at less than 10,000 miles. 3rd and 4th great become unusable without warning, increasing the potential for a crash. There have been over 50 reports of manual transmission failure from 2022-2024 miata owners. Concern: when the transmission internals fail without warring the vehicle experiences loss of power and forward movement, substantially increasing the chance of an accident in a highway driving scenario. This problem has been confirmed by Mazda dealer network. Mazda is offering to replacement transmissions, but has not told the owners if there have been modifications and improvements to the replacement units to resolve the issue, or if they are replacing the defective transmission with same kind.
Manual transmission synchronizers fail, causing erratic gear shift operation and the inability to change gears, which could result in an accident. The nd Mazda miata owners group on facebook has polled its owners and found a 10% failure rate of manual transmissions among owners in the group who required replacement of the transmission. On may 29, 2024, at approximately 20,000 miles on the odometer, my 2022 Mazda mx-5 miata experienced a grind from the transmission while downshifting to third gear at city speeds. I alerted Mazda north american operations on may 30, 2024. On may 31, 2024, the gearbox began grinding during downshifts into second gear. My car entered service at Mazda of knoxville around June 3, 2024. Mazda of knoxville confirmed that the vehicle required transmission replacement. Parts were not immediately available, and due to a work assignment in des moines, I had to drive the vehicle to iowa. On June 8, 2024, I noticed fourth gear began grinding during upshifts. On June 10, 2024, the vehicle entered ramsey Mazda of des moines for service. Mazda north american operations did not immediately approve repair, stating that their engineering department requested information from Mazda of knoxville and is reviewing the claim. I am still awaiting an update. The vehicle is available for NHTSA inspection at ramsey Mazda in des moines. Manual transmission failures are a serial problem for the nd-chassis Mazda mx-5 miata since the 2016 model year, with significant failure rates reported among owners for 2016, 2017, 2022 and 2023 model years. Symptoms begin with difficulty upshifting to third gear that feels like a blocked shift gate. Grinding in the transmission soon leads to complete failure, which causes loss of throttle control and could result in an accident. My inability to select the correct gear impeded my ability to maintain safe speeds.
2018 Mazda miata mx-5 club sport, manual transmission heading home from a friends house that evening, transmission started whirring/whining in 6th gear, then 5th, and so on through 2nd - 1st gear seems to be unaffected. I was forced to apply hazard flashers and travel well below the speed limit in the right lane of the PA turnpike until I made my way to local roads. As I got closer to home, there was also a slight crunch between gears. All of the symptoms above got worse until arriving home, where the vehicle was parked to await diagnosis/repair. 2016+ Mazda miata mx-5 manual transmissions are infamous for being fragile, but I never expected my transmission to fail before I reached 20,000 miles on the odometer. Mazda also refused to refund it due to my car being just months out of warranty. I am now out $2000+ from sourcing a new transmission and having it installed on a relatively new car, which is unheard of.

Transmission failure due to bad synchros.
6 speed manual transmission failure at 59,000 miles started not shifting into 3rd, then shortly after, the transmission locked up in a intersection. Which stalled the vehicle out. Was able to move the vehicle by hand, out of heavy traffic. Since this effects all nd1, nd2 and nd3 manual transmissions. I dropped and changed it for a used one. While I rebuild the original. As I am also outside of warranty.

My vehicle has only 8700 miles. At around 2500 miles first gear refused to engage, and I had to start the car in second for a week. That week I scheduled for service but the problem was not reproducible, since then it has been intermittent by never prolonged like that full week. This is and was a safety risk because I have been stuck on a hill, stop signs, and green traffic lights etc. Because it was not reproducible, the claim was dismissed. At around 4000 miles and on, third gear became very inconsistent in shift action. Typically it won't allow me to shift into third at all, other times it will grind, or requires excessive force to engage gear. This happens both in motion and at a stop. In traffic, the sudden loss in speed and rpm from being unable to shift into third poses a risk, especially getting onto on ramps. The dealer still cannot reproduce the issue, and in fact I have a 2 minute long video of the fault - pending their response to the video. Mazda corporate claims this is not a known or common issue. No warning lights pick up this fault. I have since continued to come to a resolution, and will return to the dealership.
The manual transmission has a synchronizer failure. Safety was put at risk due to inability to safely complete a gear change reliably. The problem has been reported to the dealer and the transmission has been replaced once and is scheduled to go in 9/23/24 for a possible second transmission replacement. There are no warning lights associated with the failure. The only symptom is the inability to complete a shift with no warnings of this failure prior to it first presenting itself.
As I was exiting a bp gas station (62 griffin corporation dr, chelsea, al 35043) and making a right onto county road 11, the rear tires of the car started to spin (1/4 throttle). I noticed that abs or the stability control system did not activate. The car was not in "sport" mode. It was in the "d" driving mode. The rear tires continued spinning and I felt the car's back end fishtailing. At this point, I started to get on the brakes hard and try to do minor corrections, when I felt that the brake pedal was not pulsating, and the car was not slowing down at all. At this point, I was facing oncoming traffic and the railroad tracks that were about >500 ft in front of me. I look to my right and notice that I am about to slide into the railroad crossing sign. The impact was hard enough to where my right buttock ended up next to the handbrake of the car. My arm is slightly bruised from it being swung to the right and hitting the passenger window. The airbags were not deployed at all. However, the damage done to the car is, left lower control arm scratched/scuffed/damaged, the passenger side mirror broken off, the passenger door dented inwards, the side skirt (the part that runs across the bottom of the car) ripped off on the driver's side and bent upwards on the passenger side, and finally, the passenger side door sill dented/bent inwards. The pictures attached are the photos of my bruise and the incident.

6 speed manual transmission, vehicle stationary and doesn't want to go into 1st gear and you sometimes must shove it in, intermittent issue. Also a ton of gear whine under moderate throttle in 3rd and 4th gear. Failiure mileage is 41,118 miles. Failure of the transmission in gear at speed could result in a catastrophic accident due to loss of forward propulsion. Mazda has released a TSB on this ref is r083/16b and 05-007/16 yet are basically telling me it's up to the nhsta to recall it or their's nothing they will do until it completely grenades and potentially causes an accident. This is not a small issue affecting a small batch of cars, this is a fairly widespread issue affecting a large span in production. From internal sources I've learned Mazda is on the fourth separate revision of the 6 speed manual transmission in the 4th generation mx-5 and even some 3rd revision transmissions have shown weakness. In short, the 6 speed manual transmission was not designed for the 2. 0l engine in the u. S model, instead was only intended to be used with the less torquey 1. 5l in the european and japanese model. Mazda USA pushed for the 2. 0l last minute in production for more power in the u. S market despite not having a suitable manual transmission available. The difference in manufacturing tolerances has led to several instances of complete gear failure in stock completely unmodified cars and is an accepted design flaw by Mazda and why they have had so many complete transmission overhauls in a short span. In short every manual mx-5 that was produced before September 6th 2016 has a transmission that's a ticking time bomb. Mine is September 2015 production date. I strongly believe this TSB should be referenced and these transmission recalled. A weird coincidence is this very car also had an automatic transmission recall. I have attached the referenced TSB below. Please recall.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Mazda mx-5. While driving approximately 10 mph across an intersection, the vehicle decelerated. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Another vehicle traveling across the intersection colided with the rear passenger side of the contact's vehicle. Police report number: 2019643494 was filed. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was towed to a body shop and repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.
Wbaught car when it was (2) and had about 22k miles immediately windshiled filled with tiny chips paint started chipping at (6) huge sections of paint gone. And clutch fades at light only 41k miles. Mazda impossable to deal with.

When accelerating from a traffic light the transmission stopped working and I lost acceleration in a busy road. This is the second time this has happened in a busy intersection.
While accelerating my transmission gears have disintegrated twice leaving car with no way to use power. Once was a side street, other time I was making a left turn in an intersection.
Purchased this used 2005 Mazda miata about a month ago. Servicing many components since purchase and learning about this vehicle. Found blog about premature frame rail rust on many miata's (shocked to find out many miata's have this, and disappointed that I have to worry about premature frame rail failure under engine of vehicle. Here is the link to one of the blogs (according to this site, national Mazda has been willing to do nothing for Mazda owners to this point). . Read more...
