One problem related to windshield wiper/washer linkages has been reported for the 1997 Mazda Protege. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Windshield wiper linkage failed, causing inoperative windshield wipers. Dealer was notified, and informed consumer it was not cover under a manufacturer's recall. The consumer purchased replacement parts and the problem was solved.
