1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 01/02/2020

Mazda recalled all 2004-2008 Rx8 models for fuel pump and lockring gasket assembly leakage. My 2009 Rx8 has the same issue and starting leaking gas on 1-02-2020 while parked in a garage. I called Mazda and was told there were no recalls; however my car has the same problem the 2004-2008 models had. Now I have to pay close to $1,000. 00 for repair that should be covered under the recall.

6 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 10/07/2017

On September 30th, 2017 I took my 2005 Mazda Rx8 to the gunther Mazda dealership located at 1800 south state road 7 (441), fort lauderdale, florida 33317 for recall work of the fuel pump seals. The next day I filled the tank and went to work, I drive form hollywood to boca raton daily. The smell of gasoline was strong and my tank wasn't lasting as long as usual. I called gunther Mazda and was told to bring the car in on Saturday October 7, 2017. The service person, ron, said he strongly smelled the gasoline and said it was a carbon build up on the throttle and that his foreman would look at the car. I signed paperwork, but didn't receive a copy. I got there about 10:30, at about 11:50, I was informed that the problem was my catalytic converter. I filled the tank with gas and my mechanic took the back seats off. The fuel pump seal was filled with gasoline, the car was leaking gasoline and fumes in the cabin were overwhelming. When I called gunther Mazda to speak with ron, I was hung up on 3 times. When my husband called he was met with extreme rudeness and told that it would cost about $130 for them to reexamine the car. It is absolutely unconscionable that the gunther Mazda located at 1800 south state road 7 (441), fort lauderdale, florida 33317 would let me drive away from their dealership knowing that the fuel pump seal was faulty. My car could have blown up killing me and maybe others. My mechanic removed the assembly to repair and said the install was incorrectly done. He will be sending me additional pictures of what he found.

7 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 03/28/2017

Fuel pump nozzle is cracked allowing fuel to leak and fuel pressure to drop cause driveability problems and stalling. Mazda claims its the ring and gasket on their recall but it's the fuel pump cracking. My car started bucking and running erratically. Installed and would not restart for a short period of time. This has been an ongoing problem for roughly one year.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

The fuel pump outlet pipe connector was leaking for sometime. It eventually caused startup problem in very hot weather. This leaked very slowly and all RX-8 should be recalled to replace the 12" flexible pipe/tubing with a reliable connector that does not leak. This connector must have been a issue, not a lot of cars used this since mid 2000. Very hard to find replacement parts. And coupled with overheated cat emissions its a fire waiting to happen.

11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2006 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 06/18/2015

While driving an increasing smell of raw gasoline was noticed in the vehicle. Upon investigation of the fuel pump located under the passenger seat behind the driver's seat there was an accumulation of gasoline below the fuel pump outlet to fuel line coupling. Upon removing the fuel line coupling and the fuel line going to the engine it was observed that there was a crack approximately 1/2 inch long in the bottom portion of the plastic fuel pump outlet which had allowed gasoline to accumulate on top of the fuel pump housing. The fuel pump along with the fuel line going to the engine were both replaced which corrected the fuel leak problem. It would be recommended to check for cracks in the fuel pump outlet the next time this type of vehicle is brought in for service.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

Vehicle had strong smell of raw gasoline fumes in the cabin and outside the car. Upon removing the rear seat to access the fuel pump for inspection, a pool of gasoline was found around the fuel pump and surrounding area to include the electrical wiring for the pump. It appears the leak occurs from a faulty plastic nipple on the fuel pump assembly that connects the pump to the main fuel line. A quick internet search uncovered this is not an isolated incident with the Mazda Rx8. The fire and safety hazard associated with this issue is immense. I would recommend a further review by the NHTSA to assess the severity and spectrum of the fuel pump issue in the Mazda Rx8.

14 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

The fuel line input nipple, on the fuel pump assembly, cracks and causes a leak. The fuel pump lock ring is not the problem and can be reused. Replacing the fuel pump assembly fixes the problem. It is very common on all 2004-2008 models.
