Three problems related to transmission noise have been reported for the 2001 Mazda Tribute.

Failure Date: 12/18/2006

Mazda 2001 Tribute suddenly stopped making a strange noise. Then gear box did not work at all. So, I had to call a towing company to tow the car to a Mazda dealer shop. Oak tree Mazda dealer inspected the car and asked about five thousand dollars to replace whole transmission. At the time, Mazda Tribute recorded only 45k mile. I asked another machine shop to inspect this car. He has never seen this problem before. It seems to be a design problem of Mazda Tribute.

Tribute would make slipping noise when on a hill. It would also shutter when I first took off. I called the dealership about the problem. They thought it was the transmission, but couldn't look at the car until after the first of the year. About 2 weeks later, I took off and the car surged. I pulled off the road and when I put the car back into drive, it wouldn't move. It was towed to the Mazda dealership where it still sits. I was told it needed a new transmission that would cost $2900+. The district manager was notified. They took $1000. 00 off the price. Which leave me paying only $1900+ the other $900. I've put in this car since July 04. I had a full circle service inspection done on oct. 25 ,2004. The transmission condition was good at that time, just 2 months earlier.

At 15,860 (8/31/2001) the transmission was replaced on my 2001 Mazda Tribute. The transmission is still unstable and hesitates and makes noise. I'm at 58,000 miles and out of warranty. The car was returned once to the dealer and was not fixed. If I take the car back to the dealership, they will charge to look at. I have had numerous problems - including a defective master cylinder, headlamp and other issues and recalls. This is the worst automobile I have ever purchased and I think Mazda and it's dealerships no this. I'm very persistant individual and I feel the average person would have had to pay out of pocket for some of the repairs I had done to my Mazda Tribute.
