Failure Date: 04/14/2014
Applying brakes and abs kicks in and makes the tires lock up in the back and slides the rear end of the vehicle around. Seems electrical problems are occurring also. Headlights have a short, reverse lights don't work, and window controls don't always work. Vehicle has done all this since I have owned it. It was bought used and I have had it checked for all recalls and they are all up to date, or so the Mazda dealer says they are. I have had brakes replaced along with rotors and tires and the vehicle does the same thing.

Bought vehicle at about 75k miles, currently has 99k miles, during this entire time the brakes have been warped and have gotten substantially worse. My driving habits are primarily city, and hwy driving, no towing, no heavy loads. Brakes should be fine but are warped so bad that when braking medium to hard, especially before a corner, the vehicle become difficult to control from shaking and shuttering of the brake rotors. From the research I found online this appears to be a common problem among Mazda Tributes. I was instructed to report this here. Mazda needs to confront this issue because it is so common.

Got a recall notice in Feb. 2012 and have not heard anything from Mazda since. I did contact the CO. And they said the parts to fix my car would be available in the second quarter of 2012. It is now June 13th and I still have not heard anything. Do I need to be concerned? the recall is 6712a and I was told not to park close to any structures. My husband wants the car moved away from the house. I need to know if there is a real safety problem and why the CO. Won't get back to me about it. Thank you.

Received notice from Mazda regarding safety recall #6712a in Feb 2012 for our 2002 Mazda Tribute - recommended action was to park vehicle outdoors, away from structures to prevent unattended potential fire from spreading related to electrical short /abs module. It has now been 3 months and Mazda has not provided the necessary repairs to return this vehicle to a safe condition.

I started my car and the 'check engine' light flashed on-and-off. Thinking it would go away, I drove to route 3 in south shore, MA. Once on the highway, the light did not stop flashing, so I pulled over. Thirty seconds after pulling over in a rest area, white smoke appeared from under the hood. 10 seconds later, black smoke came from the hood which was accompanied with a burning smell. Luckily, someone from massdot was in the rest area and we determined that it was a car fire. We proceeded to step back and call 911 from a safe distance. The engine area of the car was on fire until the fire department was able to put it out.

I was driving home and the front coil spring broke{the top portion} when it broke it blew out my tire and loged a piece of it in between the brake rotor some how tearing the tire to bits. And then apx a month after that the other one broke luckily it di not do the same damage as the first time. So because of the cheaply made and wrongfully heat treated metal the spring broke. Which cost me a tire of 165. 00 and to replace th spring at the cost of 273. 69
this should be a recall because someone is going to die after looking in to it Ford explorer, and the escape which is the exact same as the Mazda I found this has been a issue for alot of people. A sping of all parts of a car shouls never break like this. This could have and should have been prevented by not over heating the steel that the spring was made out of the is clearly neglect on Ford manufacturing and needs to be addressed before someone dies. Because I was able to maneuver my car so I didn't hit anyone or anything the next person may not be so lucky. . . .

My car was parked for two days when a fire started in the engine compartment. The fire started on the abs module and burned the wire harness attached to the abs module. I was able to put the fire out before the fire did major damage was done, however, I had to cover the deductible and insurance had to cover the rest of the cost. This car had been recalled for the abs and I had taken it to the dealership when recalled. After service, I continued to receive recall notices, thought I was told there was nothing that needed to be serviced.

When pulling out of a parking lot, I applied the brakes. The engine completely stalled. I started it back up and everytime I applied the brakes, the engine stalled. After letting it sit for 1/2 hour, it ran fine. Two days later, it happened again. The Mazda dealership and an independant auto shop ran diagnostic and said the car was fine. It stalls like this every 3-4 days with no warning. You will be driving down the highway and have to brake and it stalls completely. No power to steering or acceleration.

The consumer said that the vehicle stalled while being driven at 25 mph. The vehicle would not start after that. The consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer. The dealer replaced the alternator and it still would not start. A mechanic told the consumer that the problem was electrical . The dealer said that the problem was electrical. The manufacturer said that the dealer would be responsible for replacing the alternator. The consumer said that she had to pay for the replacement. The dealer had the vehicle for a week. (12/01/05) the vehicle would make a noise when being driven up to 40 mph and a loud hissing noise would become noticeable when applying the brakes.

I have a Mazda Tribute which I bought brand new from Mazda and I just had to put new plates on, so it is exactly 1 year old in driving time. My problem is that at 16,000 miles the service department told me that I would soon need new brakes and rotors I thought that was strange as I have owned a number of new cars and never had to replace my rotors and never needed brakes on any car this early. Now at 20,000 miles they are saying they have to be replaced and my husband looked and said the rotors are all worn but that my brakes hardly look worn at all. Mazda dealership says this is a common situation with this particular car. My husband and I would like to report this because if a person were to be driving this make and model and not be taking it in regularly for the warrenty checks the rotors could go out and cause major problems.

Within months of buying the SUV we had it back to crystal auto mall, green brook, NJ the problem. . . The steering wheel came loose, it would shift around as you drove down the road! this was a quick repair. Starting on sept 18,2002 we took it in to the dealer for the oil pressure light coming on, they replaced the oil sender unit, total $69. 52, which was covered by warranty. On oct 14 back for the same problem, they kept it until oct 17, replacing all kinds of parts, oil pump, oil gasket for a total of $924. 65, again covered by warranty. My husband was driving it home from this round of repairs and the same problem lit itself up again! he was almost home appox. 30 miles from the dealer, he called on his cell phone said he was coming right back, this time they had it from oct 18 to oct 31, 2002. What a surprise when I heard they replaced the entire motor for a total of $4,511. 17, again under warranty. Strange thing was that they would not extend the warranty on the new motor beyond the original guarantee for the truck. Now you tell me is this right? that's not the end of it, on June 21, 2003, we brought it in for a noise coming from the front end they kept it over the weekend until June 23 and told us it needs breaks and rotors and wheel alignment which of course is not under warranty!!! only 24000 miles on this SUV and nothing but headaches.

My 2002 Mazda Tribute seems to have an inordinate amount of brake dust. We were told that this was normal on the Tribute by the dealer. However, we have to clean the front wheels constantly because they are black with heavy dust within one week of washing. We have noticed other new vehicles do not appear to get as much brake dust in a short time period. We are wondering if large amounts of brake dust is a normal occurrence or if there is a defect in the braking system.
