Mazda Tribute owners have reported 16 problems related to brake fluid leak (under the service brakes category).
I noticed a brake fluid leak under the vehicle in my garage. After checking under the hood, I noticed brake fluid splattered around engine compartment. When I checked the brake fluid, the top was loose, and the reservoir was low. This is the second time I noticed this, and when I checked my VIN# against recalls, there is none for this problen for my particular vehicle. But I know there is a safety recall in effect for 2001-2002 Tributes for this problem per NHTSA 12v016000. It specifically references the master cylinder reservoir cap, which I think may be my problem also.

Had just returned from driving on freeway, pulled into gas station, needed to move for another vehicle when brakes failed and pedal went down to floor. Rolled car into snow bank to avoid accident. Noticed fluid leaking around front tires. Had to fill brake fluid reservoir and drove car across street to mechanic. Both front brake hoses were split near base of connector and very stiff. Both were replaced along with 1 caliper for $300. Mechanic stated he never saw both hoses go at once and was surprised they split at only 100,000 miles. Per the internet, many Ford escapes and Mazdas have been experiencing this problem. We could have been killed if we had still been driving on the freeway. I'm sure Ford and Mazda are both aware of this on going problem and have chosen not to remedy it. Have owned many different cars throughout the years and have never had to replace a brake hose. I hope they don't wait for someone to die before they decide to do anything about it. On top of the fact I did not have $300 to spare for a repair which I feel was avoidable on their behalf.

Pulling up to place my order in a drive through with the car going idle speed when the brakes were applied I heard the front brake line blow causing my car to lose ability to stop. Underneath the brake line was a puddle of brake fluid.

On June 25, 2013 @ 11:00am I called Mazda corporation (reference call number: 148295420) about recalls associated with my Mazda Tribute 2003 and was told that the recalls were not assigned to the VIN number of my vehicle. The Mazda representative stated that only the seat beat adjustment has been assigned to my vehicle and that I do not qualify for the recall. Mazda will not honor the recall. I bought the Tribute in 2010 from a dealership; thus, was not aware of the recalls. I have been having a lot of problems with the vehicle and have spent a lot of money trying to fix it. I have a 13 and 14 year old girls and am a single parent. According to the recall, the vehicle is not safe. I can not afford right now to purchase another vehicle. I am only asking Mazda to honor the recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 154,000 and the current mileage was 188,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Mazda Tribute. The contact stated that vehicle caught on fire while parked. The contact called the fire department to extinguish the flames. The fire department stated that the fire was due to an electrical component. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign I. D. Number 12v016000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock: control unit/module), which stated that a fire could result from brake fluid leaking onto the master cylinder. The contact did not verify with the manufacturer if the vehicle was involved in the recall. The failure mileage was 113,000.
The contact owns a 2003 Mazda tribune. The contact stated that while braking to a stop, the brake line failed. The brake line fractured and all of the fluids leaked out. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who repaired the brake lines. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Master cylinder cap leak caused fluid to drip on abs module causing short, now abs module motor stays on continuously even when I turn off the car, unless I disconnect the battery. (this is the 3rd oem master cylinder I have had replaced on this Mazda Tribute! they all have had leaky caps!) I already had the last Mazda abs recall completed (which was a joke - Mazda was only bound to "inspect the abs module for corrosion - and if they found none they were not bound to take any action or replace any parts). I received another recall notice within a month of them completing the first recall. This time the recall states that they must replace the leaky master cylinder cap and replace the faulty abs module at no cost. So I called my local dealership (rick case Mazda) and explained that my vehicle is already showing symptoms that could result in a fire if I weren't disconnecting the battery every time I turned off and parked the vehicle. To which they said they had no parts yet from Mazda to service the recall, but bring it in anyway and we'll diagnose the problem. Service manager says they will ask the Mazda rep what they should do in this case. I have no confidence that they will take care of the problem as they obviously did not do anything on the last recall.
