My Mazda Tribute v 6, 3. 0 all of a sudden stopped on the highway. I had it towed to my son's house, than to the Mazda dealership. It was at the dealership when I was told what had occurred. My coils had blown out and damaged my (pcm)computer. They said it would cost $2689. I could not afford the dealership's cost so I had it towed again to a private mechanic where he replaced the coils. I went on ebay and found a reasonably priced pcm where it was programmed keys included. My research has led me into writing this letter. I found that Ford motors and their affiliates have known about this problem with the coils blowing out the pcm for quite some time and have never told the owners of their vehicles about this problem. If I had known I would have never purchased the vehicle.

Failure Date: 06/02/2015

The 2005 Mazda Tribute initially started to be sporadically sluggish/hesitation when stepping on the gas. It seemed like there was a delay from when I pressed on the gas pedal to when the vehicle actually accelerated. On 6/4/15, a couple days after first experiencing the sluggishness/hesitant acceleration, the vehicle stalled/lost power while driving 55 miles per hour on a busy road. Fortunately, I was able to coast over to the side of the road. Within a few minutes I was able to restart the vehicle and continue on my way. The vehicle continued to be sluggish at acceleration and would randomly stall while driving and/or idling. At this point with the vehicle's mechanical issues, the check engine light was not on- even though there was something major wrong with the vehicle. Over the next couple weeks I had the vehicle in the shop three times. The first time in the shop (6/6/15) the check engine light was still not on- -so they were not able to diagnose the problem. They shop suggested replacing the fuel filter and do a fuel system clean-- which I did. The vehicle continued to be sluggish/hesitant when accelerating & randomly stalled while driving and/or idling. About a week later the check engine light finally came on. I took the vehicle to the shop & they indicated the code was telling them that cylinder 2 was misfiring. No other codes were read. All the spark plugs were replaced, coils were checked (in good condition). The check engine light did not come back on; however, the vehicle continued to run sluggish and stall while driving (multiple times when I was going 55-65 mph). On 6/24/15 the car stalled again but this time it would not restart. I had the vehicle towed to the shop & they indicated the computer was dead and needed to be replaced. I contacted Mazda and they denied there were issues with the Mazda Tribute computers and said it was just my vehicle.

Car stops accelerating due to gas pedal being stuck.

car image   Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Mazda Tribute 5
Failure Date: 09/10/2014

My gas peddle drops and I cannot accelerate. This has happened over 10 times when I'm driving. I thought that I possibly slid the carpet to knock the gas pedal off, but I have removed my carpet and it happened twice since then. I've been in intersections and my gas pedal just drops to the floor. This could be very serious if I happened to have been passing someone. In these situations, after several attempts pulling it back up, I did manage to get the peddle to work again. But I'm afraid I won't always be so lucky. I brought my car in to a Mazda dealer and they said they have a bulletin that requires a cable change and a clip at the cost of approx. $140. 00. This started happening at approx. 65000 miles, and I now have 80k miles.

Failure Date: 04/24/2014

When approaching a 4-way intersection during daylight hours, the light turned yellow then red. I tried to stop by pressing my brake pedal. My vehicle did not slow down, but continued to accelerate up hill. I pressed as hard as possible but my vehicle went through the intersection and I ran into the side of another vehicle. I was originally going about 30mph and when I hit the other vehicle, I was going about 25mph. My vehicle stopped after hitting the other vehicle but continued to rev higher. I was injured when my arms bent the steering wheel forward, the seat belt bruised me and my right foot (talus bone) was broken by the pressure on the brake pedal. I required surgery. I was out of work for 3 weeks and wore a cast for 7 weeks. The policeman who reported to the accident site discovered the gas pedal was half way down to the floor and stuck. The other driver and a witness said they heard the vehicle revving after it stopped after impact. The vehicle cut off after about 30 seconds on its own and would not restart. There are similar reports of this happening on the website but no recalls have been issued. I had owned the vehicle for 5 years and 9 months at the time of the accident. The vehicle was totaled.

Driving on highway, engine just failed to accelerate suddenly and had to coast over to the breakdown lane. Engine did not turn completely off as it continued to hesitate and rpms fluctuated between 500-1000 but gas pedal would not accelerate car. Immediately put hazard lights on so cars behind me would know thar I was not at constant speed anymore.

For the past 6 months my car will periodically loose power, I would be in the middle of a busy street, in stop and go traffic, or anywhere, and suddenly have no acceleration at all. It would then jerk very violently until I just shut it off. After 2 or 3 episodes, my car would be fine for several weeks, before happening again. Early on there were no dash lights that came on and the dealership could not identify any problem. After about 4 months there was finally an engine light and a code that indicated an issue with the electronic throttle body. But the dealership says they are still not sure what is wrong with my car, because they could not duplicate the problem. Now my car is out of warranty, and I am still having the same issue, however it is occurring more frequently, to the point it is not safe to drive my car anymore. When my husband looked up the part 2 weeks ago the price was $176. 00 ¿ yesterday he called to get a price and they are now $350. 00 or more at dealerships,(grapevine Ford) that have them in stock, or dealerships that haven't jacked up the price (hiley Mazda), they are out of stock and on back order.

Failure Date: 02/25/2013

The first time I had an issue with the gas pedal, I was backing out of a driveway and the pedal got stuck all the way down. My car wouldn't move. Since then, I've had 5 instances where I'm driving my car and let up on the gas pedal and it gets stuck. I have to stomp on the pedal multiple times for it to start working again. I'm always in traffic and have to turn on my hazard lights and pull off to the side if there is a shoulder available. This has also happened when merging onto the interstate when traffic is moving over 50 mph. This is very dangerous and I'm upset to find that many other owners have had this issue and we have to pay to get this fixed. It should be a recall.

I have found that my gas pedal won't depress in cold weather. The first time this happened was a few weeks after I bought the car in 2009. The said it's cold and the car just needs to warm up. This problem has continued to happen year after year, but never for any length of time. However this morning, as I was driving to work the pedal would no longer depress as I was going down the road. Eventually I coasted to a red light and I frantically stepped on the pedal to no avail. I was able to turn on my hazard lights and somehow coast into a parking lot. I continued to let the car sit and warm up for another 10-12 minutes, when I was finally able to rev the engine. Believing that the problem was solved I backed out of my parking sort and again tried to drive forward, however the pedal still would not depress. After sitting another 10 minutes, I was finally able to press the pedal hard enough for it to depress. I ended up needing one of my CO-workers to follow me to work in case it happened again; which is did after 3-4 more times on my 10 minute drive to work. Please look into this issue.

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

As the weather gets cold, the gas pedal becomes harder to depress, and at times will not depress at all. This has caused numerous near misses when attempting to accelerate around a turn as the pedal will lock in place and the vehicle will not accelerate at all. It takes significant force to depress the pedal, to the point of stomping on it, and even then it does not always work. This is a very serious safety issue, one that will at some point result in a very severe if not deadly crash, and no one seems the slightest bt interested in fixing the problem.

On 2/10/11 my son was in an accident with our 2006 madza Tribute. The gas peddel would stick every now and then, and the only way to release it was to push down on it with you foot and it would resume. Unfortuntly, he was driving on the I-5 freeway near grants pass, oregon when it stuck and he lost control of the vehicle. He hit a semi truck, then a 2nd semi truck, and was cited for reckless driving, although driving the legal speed limit on dry pavement. My son is 31. The state police gave him a blood test for alleged driving under the influence, but it came up negative. He is suffering muscular injuries as is his girlfriend who was a passenger in the vehicle. The gas peddel sticking would happen a couple of times a month, just off and on, and I currently only work part time since loosing my full time employment this past June (2010). The vehicle is totaled as a result of the accident. I am now without transportation and have to purchase a replacement vehicle, and/or have repaired an old car I have sitting at home. I wonder if other madza Tributes are having this problem. Nancy h. Southerland 3111 w. Woodside Ave. Rpseburg, or 97471 541 391-9187 nhsoutherland@gmail. Com.

My gas pedal gets stuck. . Help!! I was on my way to work. I put my foot on the gas pedal and it was stuck. I quickly pushed the brake and was able to pull over. I remember hearing about this so I pulled up my carpet thinking it might be that. I started back on my way to work and the pedal was "sticky". After work I was trying to pull out of my parked spot. My gas pedal got stuck again. My car was accelerating on its' own. I tried the brake it would not help. I put it in neutral and it slowed down. I was finally able to stop the car. I got out of the car to see what was going on and could not figure it out. I got back in the car and tried again, it was still stuck. This was so bad because not only was it dangerous for me, I am a teacher and the students walk through the parking lot all the time. It was dangerous for everyone. I called the Mazda dealer ( I have a 2006 Tribute) asking if there was a recall, they said no. I came home and found that many people had this same problem (the Ford escape is the same as my car) their gas pedal gets stuck!!! this is horrible, common, and dangerous.

My 2006 Mazda Tribute has been experiencing problems with the accelerator sticking in the idle position. This evening the peddle would not budge at all leaving the vehicle in idle and me stranded. I am concerned that this peddle problem may cause me to accelerate suddenly if I push very hard on the peddle.

When cold, gas pedal will not depress. Becomes firm and resistant to pressure. Have to slam on pedal, but receive no power from engine---happens alot when trying to turn corners, will not accelerate- can cause severe if not fatal accident if this occurs at the wrong time. Please force Mazda to issue recall for this part, could be related to throttle body as well.

When the weather gets cool (sub 50f) the gas pedal will stick. When the gas pedal is fully depressed and you go to push it down it sticks. When this sticking finally lets go the vehicle jumps forward. The v6 version of this SUV has a recall on the pedal but I own the v4.

On cold mornings the gas peddle sticks and won't press down until the car warms up completely. Sometimes takes along as 15 minutes to warm up enough to engage the gas peddle. And sometimes after driving the car for several miles (as many as 15 miles) the gas peddle sticks again and no gas is being supplied. I've had to just coast off the road and pat the gas peddle until it breaks loose.

Happens more during cold weather. When you push on the accelerator it sticks and when it finally lets go you lurch forward. Luckily I have not had any accidents over this yet, but feel that is always a possibility and feel like it is unsafe. I was told it has to do with the butterfly valve. It has been happening for at least 4-5 years. I have asked numerous times if there has been a recall because from what I can see there have been many complaints by other consumers. If this ever causes me to have an accident, I will be suing Mazda!.

Have a 2006 Mazda Tribute 4cyl, and am having speed control issues when the weather is cold. The gas pedal sticks and will not depress, even when being stomped on. This issue occurs when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. It has happened when coming around a corner, or when driving in regular traffic, forcing me to coast to the shoulder, almost causing accidents. Please look into this model as well for a recall relating to this issue. Thank you.

I purchased a 2009 Mazda Tribute from jim ellis Mazda in atlanta, GA. Upon driving the vehicle, I noticed the gas pedal had a strange feel to it, but thought nothing of it. I assumed that it must be a feature with new cars, as it had been years since I'd purchased a new car and expected technological advances. Nevertheless, as months have progressed and several of my friends have driven my car have said that the gas pedal issue is not in anyway normal. To be more specific regarding the issue, each time I accelerate from a stop, the gas pedal sticks, or gets stuck and I have to push it harder so it will continue to go. I've often found myself almost speeding out of control and have had to resolve to defensive driving to avoid collisions. I called Mazda customer service today and was informed to contact the dealer; however, they were not available today. I will contact them to seek a resolution from this issue as it appears this has been an on going issue with the Tribute since 2005. Furthermore, another issue that is extremely noticable is smoke or steam, I am unsure, coming from the front of the car during cold weather. I can be at a complete stope with the engine ideling, and clouds of smoke come from the front of the vehicle as if it were on fire. However, upon my inspection, I do not see flames. This is a major problem as other conerned drivers have flagged me down thinking my car was on fire. Although at this time I have not seen the dealer, and will give them the opportunity to review the issues, I feel it necessary to file this complaint form.

I have repeatedly had problems with the gas pedal sticking. Not in the "on" position but rather when I try to accelerate after stopping or deceleration it will stick and I can not push it down. It happens more when it is cold out. I am reading pages and pages on the internet of this happening with Mazda Tributes around my cars age. It seems potentially very dangerous. Also, since folks like myself have gotten it 'repaired' and it has reoccured this does not seem like a worn part but rather a defect. Please help!.

car image   Other Fuel System problem of the 2002 Mazda Tribute 30
Failure Date: 02/23/2005

I've owned this vehicle for a little over 2 years and it has been to the dealer for repairs 7 times now. No one can seem to find the reason why the check engine light stays on, why the fuel consumption is so poor, why the vehicle shifts constantly and for no reason at all, or why the vehicle "shudders" when the engine is on. The check fuel cap light has come on twice and the same part replaced twice. The canister close valve and idle air control valve have both failed. I have spent money on a fuel induction service because it was recommended by the service dealer. I had the transmission flushed because of a technical service bulletin for the torque converter - a problem that had to be identified by aamco and told to Mazda before they would try to fix the problem. I have called Mazda customer service and got anything but customer service. My problems began long before the warranty had expired; however, Mazda could care less about their lack of ability to fix ongoing problems. This vehicle is a life-safety hazard and needs to be recalled completely, not part by part. I will never buy a Mazda again. This is my third and last. The Tribute is by far the worst thing ever manufactured by Mazda. They should be embarassed to have this model on the road!.

When slowing down or proceeding to a stop, the car completely shut down in middle of the road while the engine is still running. The brakes will freeze up and the only way to stop the car is to pull up on the hand brake. The car will restart. This has always happened in traffic and is a very dangerous situation. Brought the car into the dealership the first time on may 3, 2003. Dealer said that they replaced the idle control valve. Two weeks later, the same problem arised where the car completely died in traffic. Brought it back to the dealer on June 3, 2003, they said there was improper operation and reprogrammed the pcm. The car died down again a week later while driving slowing down in traffic on the freeway. Again brought it back to the dealer for the third time June 19, 2003. Left the car overnight and had the technician drive the car 100+ miles home, but they could not duplicate the problem and sent the car home. Car died again in traffic. Brought the car back to the dealership the fourth time on July 1, 2003, and once again dealer was unable to duplicate the car. Advised me to keep driving the car until they problem worsened. This is a very dangerous situation as the car is in motion at all times when it has died and in traffic. A potentional dangerous and fatal situation that needs to be addressed immediately! the car was purchased in June 2002, and since then it has had a master cylinder leak, air bag circuit failure, as well as fuel system electrical wiring problems. Mazda needs to be aware of the potential risk factors involved in its Tribute models and recall the cars.
