Mercedes Benz C230 owners have reported 29 problems related to check engine light on (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have been notified about the safety air bag recall however, I have just found oil in my wiring harness. My car is idling very rough and stalling, the check engine light is on, I received 8 codes. I have oil in my camshaft wiring harness, my piston 1 fuel inject, spark plugs, and front of the engine where camshaft adjuster magnets are covered in black sludge oil. Another mercedes owner told me the same thing happened to his car and was "pigtailed" there has been a recall on this issue for this type of car 2005 C230 kompressor sport the recall number is #200910001. I would like for the Mercedes Benz dealership to resolve this issue, I need a government letter to be approved. May you please assist me with this request?.

Takata recall" 2006 Mercedes Benz C230 I was driving home and my car started misfiring really bad, the check engine light came on and started flickering and stayed on and the lights in the car on the dash and on the radio started to flicker on and off and then the car just was limp it wouldn't even pick up speed it was slowing down on the freeway with very busy traffic . I was scared for my life and my friend that we were going to come to a complete stop in rush hour traffic . I tried to hurry home but it was would not pick up speed it keep going slower and slower and when we had to slow down or stop due to traffic it actually turned completely off twice and I was so scared that an acceident would happen it was misfiring and just a terrible experience this should be some kind of recall or something they need to look into it abc fix it before someone gets hurt or worse .

There are issues with the engine and the car will not start. There's a class action against mercedes in regards to this same engine issue. The car was in motion when it cut off and another time after being stationary the car would not start. There was never a check engine light or any signs that indicated engine issues before the engine completely failed. I also received a notice about my airbag having a recall about a year ago and this issue has not been resolved.

2016 I took my 2007 Mercedes Benz C230, into Mercedes Benz to see why the check engine light was on. My car was purchased with 37k miles on it at the time I purchased it. How could such a major issue, arise in car so early in it's life. Mercedes stated, that they make the best quality of cars in the world! they stand by this slogan. However, why would such a major issue occur in a car with such low miles/usage? as I understand it, matters of this magnitude ideally does not occur in such a quality car, let alone in the cars infant stage or would likely happen at all! I was told sometime ago that mercedes knew of this issue. I also searched the internet and discovered so many owners are having the same issue around the world. Mercedes has refused to correct, its defect it was well aware of! who allows Mercedes Benz, the platform to see these cars to consumers, without resolving the issue. Considering a person's financial investment in their purchase! can someone help me, understand how this has happened.
My check engine light is on. I had it looked at by my mechanic. He confirmed that it is the balance shaft. This needs to be replaced. I researched this problem and found many mercedes 230 models have this manufacturer's problem because the piece was cheaply made. This is a problem with your mercedes C230 2006 and 2007 models. In 2008 C230 model this was replaced with a quality balance shaft piece which eliminated the problem. I would like for mercedes corporation to pay for the full cost of my repair because it is a manufactured faulty piece used in the 2006 and 2007c230 models. Please let me know details to get this paid for. Thank you!!.
The check engine light came on my C230 2006 mercedes-benz therefore I'd taken the vehicle to the repair shop. The mb mechanic stated I have a bad balance shaft that needs to be replace. The mb repair shop quoted me over $6000 to repair a defective balance shaft. The engine will not start with this defective part, and/or the car will stop because of the failed part while driving.
The balance shaft issue is a known issue to mercedes in the m272 and m273 models caused by defective material used in making it. I have added the excerpt from the mercedes service bulletin : "applicable models (not applicable to model 164. 156, 204 or 216. 386): equipped with m272 engine up to serial no. 2729. . 30 468993 or m273 engine up to serial no. 2739. . 30 088611. The material for the balance shaft sprocket and the timing chain guide wheel (idler) was modified on engines past the serial numbers listed above" there should be a recall on this part. My check engine light came on driving at high speeds and found out it was an engine issue that mercedes doesnt want to take responsibility for.
I was on the fwy and then all of a sudden the car shut down on me it completely turn off. Since I bought the car it does the same problem when I'm on the fwy out of no where the car shut down. I have to wait a few minutes until I can turn on again I almost got into a huge accident with a big rig and I had my manager who witness how the car just shut down. I feel that the car is very unsafe steering wheel not stable correctly and I feel that it has some kind of engine and transmission problem but the weird part no check engine light comes up to diagnose the problem. I took the car to the dealership more then 3x and they said the car was perfectly fine.
Balance shaft premature failure found by cel (check engine light) during diagnostics check at Mercedes Benz of nashville, TN. The engine has been running well so I was shocked that the first time my check engine light came on that the repair is the balance shaft $5,600 repair. Mbusa refused good will assistance to service director bill hudson on 8/21/13. The service report shows all engine related checks are green/good except for the check engine light reading balance shaft replacement required. I drive over 100 interstate miles daily so the warranty is exceeded quickly. Based on # of claims this is a common problem that will eventually be a safety hazard because the car will fail to accelerate when merging and even stall out complete at any speed. Where is the recall?????.
My check engine light came on so I went to mechanic to check. They performed a computer code test to find problem. The code indicates that the balance shaft is starting to fail. I researched on-line and discovered this is a known defect within this engine. Apparently mercedes is unwilling to assume responsibility for this defect. Repairing this problem is extremely costly and the buyer shouldn't bare responsibility for their faulty parts. I understand there is a class action lawsuit filed, but I can't find out the current status of it. This defect can cause immediate engine failure when driving causing the auto to stop in traffic. Being that thousands of mercedes vehicles have this defect I don't understand why the ntsb isn't stepping in.
The check engine light came on and I had the car looked into at a reputable mb dealership. The codes that were read were c1200 and c1208 for intake and camshaft timing retarded (need balance shaft). This is a $4,000 repair. I cannot believe that this is a problem on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it. I also see that I am not alone in having this problem on my C230 mb. Apparently many others have or had this same issue with the engine on 2006 and 2007 C230's. I did not have the work done due to the expensive costs. However I am now unable to drive my car because I run the risk of being stranded as I drove it the same day I picked it back up from the dealership and it would not start. After waiting several minutes and trying to start the vehicle back up it started as normal. It is very frustrating to drive the car and not ever know if it will start or not.
Took our daughter's 2006, C230 Mercedes Benz to our mercedes certified mechanic to repair a sluggish problem that caused the check engine light to come on. . I was informed that a part in the engine called the balancer was going bad. . . The cost is an approx $5000. 00. And that we would have to take it to the local mercedes dealership to do the repair. The part installed in the 2006 and 2007 models was made of a too soft a metal, so its a defective part to start with! this part apparently causes the engine to lose power while driving. . . Benz has not issued a recall on this part.
Took the vehicle to the dealer when the check engine light came on. Car was diagnosed with a bad balance shaft that needed to be replaced. Apparently this has been a problem with this engine on numerous models of mercedes as class action lawsuits have been filed in numerous states.
Vehicle seems to run fine but after a cold morning start the check engine light illuminated. After taking it to the dealership for diagnostics (totaling $105. 00) it was revealed that the code rendering the balance shaft or possible bad sensor was the reason for the check engine light illuminating. The estimate cost for this repair is ranging from 5 to 6 grand. This is highly unacceptable for a vehicle with only 45,000 miles. 2007, Mercedes Benz, C230, black on black, that has been stored for a majority of its existence because I am deployed overseas does not send a good impression when the company will not admit that there is a definite problem with this engine type. In today's economy, consumers spend a little more to reassure this type of repair is avoided by purchasing a more reliable source of transportation. I guess I should have purchased a chevy or Ford, at least then I would be expecting this type of nonsense.
On March 12, 2011, during an "a" service, I was informed by my mechanic, the check engine light was illuminated due to the left intake cam sensor was defective but it was not a big concern. On September 17, 2011, during a "b" service, my mechanic stated the check engine light was illuminated again for the left intake cam and the right exhuast cam adjuster magnets were defective or the balance shaft was worn. At this point the car was running ok but he said if he runs a diagnostic test on the engine again in the near future and it reads a second problem on the right side cam side, there is a strong possibility teeth on the cam spocket due to the usage of an inferior product. He explained it would be approximately $4,000. 00 to repair, he was repairing a vehicle with the same problem and showed me the wear on the teeth which cause the inbalance of the shaft and the cams come off line. In my mechanics opinion, Mercedes Benz knows about their defective part byt they do not want to have a "campaign" to resolve the issue and my type/year engine was made with this inferior part. I travel 80 miles to and from work and cannot afford to spend this money for a repair on a vehicle that is suppose to last me forever.
I was on the highway and the car suddenly stopped accelerating and the rpm's ran way up and the car would not accelerate. I tried putting it in neutral then drive and nothing. I pulled over turned the car off for a few min. Then back on. The car operated normally. The check engine light also came on and I had all the necessary service done on the car at that time. The car has done this increasingly for the last year and it is now becoming a hazard. The car has started jumping when put in drive and it is alarming. I cannot afford to replace the transmission and I feel mercedes should take responsibility for a defect in this model. I have children and this is my only car. I don't feel safe in it anymore and my children don't either.
I was driving my vehichle on the highway during morning rush hour when I noticed that the car would not accelerate over 35 mph. I moved the car off the highway and stopped at a red light. Once I stopped the car it would not accelerate at all when I stepped on the gas. I had to put the car in park and then move it back to drive to get the car to move. The car would jump and luch forward when I shifted gears. I drove the car dircetly to the dealer. The mercedes dealer told me that there was a problem with the software and that the software would need to be updated. I went to pick up my car after the "software " was updated ($1,700 cost) and drove the car about 10 miles when I noticed that the check engine light had come on. I took the car back to the mercedes dealer to let them know the check engine light was now on. The mercedes dealer told me I have a defective balance shaft that needs to be repaired. The mercedes dealer ask me if I had kept up the oil changes on the car. I told the them that I had. The mercedes dealer told me that I have to pay $2,500 just for them to take the engine apart and that the total repair will cost around $6,000. I just purchased the car in July 2010 ( 14 months ownership) with about 19,500 miles on it.
We have a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 sport. Shortly after purchasing this vehicle used with 32000 miles on it we started having balance shaft problems. Since then we have had the balance shaft sensor, and magnets replaces along with the crank case sensor. The vehicles check engine light is still coming on and we are now being told the balance shaft solenoids need to be replaced as well.
Received a check engine light notice. Took c-230 (2006) to dealer and was told that the code indicated a worn timing gear problem and would require major engine repair. The cost estimate was $4000 to $5000 to take the engine apart and determine if the gear was worn and needed replacement. Performed a internet search and found that this is a common problem with these engines. Car has 85,000 miles and was purchased in 2008 with 40,000. Have not had the repair performed yet.
The vehicle was being driven on interste 95 in pompano beach florida, the car started to run rough and the check engine light became illuminated. Took the car to the repair shop and it came up with 2 codes 1200 and 1208 intake and exhaust camshaft sensor right cylinder, the mechanics replaced the 2 sensors and a couple weeks later it appeared again. The original mechanic recomended another shop that specialized in mercedes. I took it there a few weks later and we were informed it is a comon problem with the mercedes and that they were being sued for it,and merceds has put out over 10 TSB on the issue and it has been hapening to cars with this new engine. The problem is the sprocket on the balance shaft was not hardened metal, like it was sapose to be.
At the end of Jan 2011, my engine light came on in my 2006 C230 mercedes benz. I took my vehicle into the dealership to get a diagnostic inspection on Feb 1, 2011. The inspection determined the vehicle needed a balance shaft. My vehicle only has 58,705 miles on it and warranty expired on it at 50,000 miles. If driven longer with the engine light on, the vehicle would of malfunction. This safety issue may of cause the vehicle to misfire and stop driving. Mercedes benz USA has received several complaints pertaining to this issue for the past few years and nothing is being done about it. Also, several class action lawsuits have been filed about this issue. A recall should be put on engine m272 & m273 balance shaft gear / idle gear. This defect in the engine is a safety issue and may cause a major accident or fatality. The pricing on the service is really ridiculous. Parts $ 478. 15 and labor $1946. 26. This price was a goodwill gesture.
The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes Benz c class 230. The contact was driving 15 mph when the red engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who ran a diagnostic test and discovered that the cam shaft was spinning free and would need replacing. There were no recalls for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 57,000.
Check engine light came on at about 51k miles, just out of warranty on C230 mercedes. The balance shaft is broken. No help with mercedes on this $3000 repair.
The engine light went on in my 2006 C230 mercedes (current milage 57,000) since sept 2010. I later confirmed it's the problem in the balance shaft, which directly impact on the acceleration and failure of the engine. The engine sudden stopped running few times in my commute to work in a freeway. Luckily, it was during the rush hour and the traffic was moving slowly. Many times when I entered to the freeway in a merge lane, the acceleration didn't work at all and I almost got hit by the other cars in the merge lane. The mechanic advised if continue driving the vehicle without replacing balance shaft will lead to a big danger to the driver and passenger since the engine can be stopped anywhere and anytime. Replacing the balance shaft cost $6,000 (from the dealer) and mercedes USA refuse to cover any portion of the repair since my car exceeds 50,000 miles/4 yrs warranty. I talked to the dealer and the service adviser. They said this is a common known problem for many of the mercedes models. In fact, it was in their service bulletin since 2007. Unfortunately mercedes wouldn't cover any repair unless there’s a recall or someone die from it. I wonder if mercedes will wait until more injuries before they consider stop using the same balance shaft in their cars. This balance shaft is a very small piece located right in the middle of the engine. The cost of the material is very inexpensive. However, it requires intensive labor because the engine must be taken apart in order to replace the balance shaft.
Although I no longer have the vehicle as it was leased, around a year, a year and 4 months ago, my Mercedes Benz was making a weird noise from the engine as well sa my check engine light had been on for weeks/months. When I took it into a mb dealership they had to first get my approval to take apart the engine to diagnose the problem, of course I said ok since it was a leased car. Once they found out the problem they suggested I needed a new engine based on a problem w/ the cylinders and that the fact I hadn't given the vehicle the proper oil changes, however I believe it was a problem caused by the balance shift gears. So they told me that it was going to cost me around $7000 to fix the problem by putting in a brand new engine, I asked if mb could help w/ the cost but they refused, claiming that since I didn't have a record of sufficient oil changes they wouldn't help. . . . So I had a tow truck pick up the car from the mb dealership and take it to another shop where they found an engine and put it in for a little less, ihad to have it done since it was leased and I had to return it back to mb. I hope that mb takes responsibility for this.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz C230. The contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who repaired the engine wiring harness and the engine cam shaft adjustment solenoid, but the failure recurred. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 75 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

Problem starts with a hesitation upon acceleration and loss of power while driving. After shutting engine off, then upon starting vehicle, engine would start to shake and stumble. Check engine light would come on. Vehicle engine sounds as if it going to blow up and has no power and stalls becomes undriveable. If you shut engine off again and restart sometimes car can be driven even though check engine light remains on. It always shows the same codes for repair. Car has been towed to dealer 2 times and driven over 4 additional times. Each time the code comes up as a coil defect and dealer has replaced coil #2 several times due to coil being burnt along with cleaning and/or replacement of spark plugs only to have the problem recur within hours or days. They still have not been able to correct problem. Dealer gave me same model loaner vehicle which I had to return within hours due to same problems.
