-the steering wheel and brake locked up and became unusable while driving at approximately 75mph. Cruise control was enabled for a few miles (maybe 2) and disabled after. Around 5 minutes after disabling, the car began to surge between acceleration and deceleration drastically on its own. All of the dashboard lights that come on when the key is initially inserted came on at once while engine was on/running and the car was in drive. After finally being able to reach a safe enough spot, I put the car in park and turned the engine off. I sat for a few minutes to try and turn the engine/car back on and the car would not crank, but the overhead lights, radio, and dash lights were functioning. -this was an extremely dangerous experience. The car began to decelerate rapidly in heavy freeway traffic. At that speed, with many semi-trucks traveling nearby, this sudden loss of speed created an extremely dangerous situation. My vehicle instantly became a slow moving obstacle in the lane. Only by luck and quick reaction was a serious or fatal collision avoided. The car would not start back up so I was sitting at the edge of the highway as many cars flew by just inches away from my car. -I am away at college in a rural city. Accessibility is limited as well as support because of lack of resources. -the car was towed to a mechanic who does not specialize in german cars and stated they did not have the proper tools to "get into the car" because the motor is "locked up" and the car wouldn't crank. -the vehicle will be towed to the nearest dealership (50mi away) who stated they won't be able to look at it for a few weeks from date of arrival. Research indicates this may be linked to a known issue with electronic steering lock (esl) / electronic ignition switch (eis) failure in mercedes vehicles, which can electronically disable the engine and steering. This could've easily been fatal for me and still poses an alarming threat if not addressed.

The "esl module" in this model is designed to unlock the steering and ignition when the vehicle key's passcode matches, using a small, mechanical motor with significantly poor durability. The problem is that this motor's failure is unpredictable, and many users of this model have been stranded and unable to start their vehicles due to the motor's lifespan ending. Even when the car is painstakingly brought to a dealership, repairs cost approximately $1,800 to $2,000, or owners are resorting to unofficial bypasses using a device called an esl emulator from the aftermarket. I'd like to request NHTSA to start a thorough investigation into this issue and a recall order for the affected models to be issued to mbusa. Thank you.

The contact owns a 2014 mercedes-benz c-250. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v252000 (steering). The contact stated that the recall repair was completed in 2018. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. After several attempts, the vehicle failed to start. The contact deactivated the push start button and attempted to start the vehicle with the key whoever, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering wheel had seized due to the steering coupling connecting bolt. The vehicle remained at the dealer pending the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the manufacturer was contacted prior to the dealer repairing the vehicle in 2018. The contact was advised to take the vehicle back to the dealer where the repair was completed in 2018 to have the vehicle inspected, and if the part that failed was the part replaced under the recall, the manufacturer would pay for the additional repair. The contact stated that the vehicle was not drivable, and that the dealer was three hours away. The failure mileage was approximately 70,664.
The esl has failed and it has happened in a lot of these cars. I was unable to move my steering wheel.
I got stranded in the middle of the street my vehicle does not crank steering lock so I had my vehicle towed into the mercedes dealership the one in figueroa st Monday November 18 2024 at around 03:24pm and this is what they told me. Needs immediate attention custom recommendation electric steering lock during vehicle inspection found electric steering lock has malfunction code 25464 recommend to replace electric steering lock first and perform re-check. Repair total estimate: $2,829. 78 I definitely can't afford to pay that amount please help with this issue.
A known issue by many mb owners related to steering wheel lock or esl system. Car will not start due to a known defect related to a part installed inside the steering wheel preventing owners from starting car safely and to get to destination safely.
Lost of drive power and the vehicle steering wheel locked on my mercedes from a damaged malfunctioning steering lock actuator module due to mechanical issues within the steering column such as bad steering wheel assembly, faulty steering lock module or issue with the wiring or other electrical components and the mercedes dealer is the only one who solves this issue no other mechanic in general. My safety was at risk due to I lost power and lost of front brakes due to bad sway bar assembly or components could of caused and accident when this happened on November 12, 2024 the problem dealership found during vehicle inspection was code 25464 they told me recommend to replace electric lock module and repair estimate was $2,829. 78 and before I approved the the amount I told mr ivan velasco service advisor that after they replace the module that if my vehicle was going to be working again and that if I was just going to make 1 payment of $2,829. 78 then I would approved it so I did. Weeks later I got an email asking for more money they wanted another payment for $600 saying it needed a sensor that has something to do with the transmission because after replacing the new module the vehicle did not start up there was no type of communications nothing at all and I responded that I was not going to pay $600 more just cause they don't know what their doing because they promise me the car was going to work after they replace the module now that it did not want to crank up they found another issue that's their fault on not doing there job the right way and for telling lies yes their was flashing blue or red icon on my dashboard that look like a car and a lock would go on and off and it displayed a message saying the theft protection is activated. I want to know if I can get this issue approved and to be considered a recall can you please help I'm so frustrating and mad that they want more money when it's already so expensive please help I would of appreciate it thank you.
My wife and the kids we're stranded for hours because of the esl systems lock the steering wheel and did not allow the car to start or steering wheel to move. She smelled something and pulled over and turned car off. No lights, no way to charge cell phone because no power to the car at all. My family was stranded because of this seems like it's a very very serious issue with a lot of mercedes-benz vehicles. As a consumer mercedes-benz is using cheap parts which can cause people to lose their lives if the steering wheel is to lock up while driving the motor burns out inside of the esl module.

Mercedes has had an issue with the steering lock for years and continue to not fix the issue. My vehicle would not turn on at random times, and this is due to a fault with the steering lock and key. The worst part of the issue, it’s only solved by mercedes due to security issues and costs $2000. I was locked out of my car for hours, missing a doctors appointment, and if this was during a snow storm or heavy freeze (I live in CO), this is a potential fatal flaw. I also learned they cannot fix my vehicle for months due to high demand and coming from germany. Looking online this is a continued problem for over a decade of vehicles and this needs to be resolved either by recall, a price adjustment due to this being a mercedes flaw, or give the capability to certified maintenance locations to do the job for a fraction of the price (I see the price of the part is marginal compared to the upcharge by the dealer.
Mercedes has a convenience easy enter/exit feature that lifts the steering and slides the driver's seat back for easy exit and restores the seat and steering when the driver sits down and places the key in the ignition. The safety issue is the steering often gets locked in the up position and doesn't lower, making it unsafe to drive the car. This is happened 5 times since I bought the car. I had to drive home with the steering wheel locked above the dashboard. The car has been towed to the dealership 4 times under warranty and now I have to get it towed myself. There are approximately 54000 miles on the car.
Steering lock mechanism fails without warning and leaves vehicle and occupants stranded in potentially dangerous location. No onsite repair possible. Vehicle must be towed to authorized dealer for repair. > safety of car occupants was at risk. > no warning prior to failure. > repair cost ~!500. Unsure of reliability of replacement unit > my dealer says this is a frequent occurrence. 6+ repairs / month for this model car at this dealer, expects same frequency at others > dealer service agent stated he personally believes it should be covered by a recall or free repair. > filed formal complaint with company (mercedes-benz) but reimbursement was refused. > similar stranding incident on same car occurred in 05/2021 and car require tow to same dealer who suspected same problem but was unable to duplicate and/or repair the failing component at that time.
The esl/eis failed. Turned car off and after coming back to try and turn it on, it didn't work. Steering wheel was locked and car wouldn't engage with key. After checking with mechanics and checking online, I discovered that it is a frequent issue that happens with no warning whatsoever. Which is quite worrisome to think the steering wheel could lock at anytime without notice. My car is a 2012 mercedes C250 coupe.
Ii was driving and car steering wheel get stuck did not move up and down and also front right seat did not move.
Slicing my hand open on my steering wheel was completely unexpected. I was at the car wash the car was sitting still, the keys were not in I the ignition and driver door was open. I reached my arm through the top opening of the steering wheel to insert my key fob and start my car. When I started pulling my arm back through, the metallic trim on top of the steering wheel frayed and sliced open my middle finger on my right hand. I can barely drive my car without having to worry about where my hand is going to go the wrong way and be sliced by part of my steering wheel I should not have to worry about this it's very dangerous.
While pulling into garage, the steering wheel locked in place and would not turn. The dealer diagnosed a faulty esl (electronic steering lock), the repair was completed at a cost to me of $1,140. 70. Mercedes benz USA refused to reimburse.
The contact owns a 2013 mercedes-benz C250. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 17v252000 (steering). Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,000.
Recall on my car is still waiting to be fixed. I bought this car brand new in April 2013. Mileage to date is only 22, 271 miles. I am now back in canada but could not bring my car to canada because there is an outstanding recall. In may 2018, the recall on steering was fixed. Because I do not live in California anymore, it is in a garage wasting away. I only usse the car in my yearly visits to check on it. Last 2018, I used the car for less than 1,000 miles. In 2019, I have not used the car. Last Feb 2020, I requested a friend to have my car checked at an mb dealership (fletcher jones in fremont, CA). They replaced the whole steering mechanism because it was leaking oil profusely. I complained that since the recall on the steering was only fixed in may 2018 and used the car less than 1,000 miles, how can the steering mechanism damaged as such. Also, although the car is almost 7 years old, the total mileage on the car is only 22. 291 miles. Is it possible that there is a manufacturer's defect in this part? on account of the fron passenger airbag recall not yet being fixed, I left my car in California. It was scheduled to be fixed in 2019 but was moved to April 2020. I have wasted so much money in this car but am not enjoying or benefiting from it. I pray that the airbag recall in this car be finally fixed this coming April as I have decided to drive it from fremont, CA to toronto, canada this coming first week of may with a CO-driver. I am feed up spending so much money on a car I am not using and do not benefit from. Please help me get the airbag fixed before I drive it to toronto canada from stockton, CA , a distance of more than 2,600 miles, exposing myself and my CO driver to high risk of not having a proper working airbag.
My car was parked at the mall, when I went to the car to start it the engine would not turn on. Had to get the car towed to a mechanic. I had to replace the steering wheel immobilizer.
Vehicle should not start. Was left stranded. Diagnostics returned esl failure. Multiple complaints about this problem from other consumers.
Takata inflators - I was sold a mercedes C250 by an authorized mercedes dealership as a certified pre-owned vehicle in March 2016. While selling the vehicle, the dealership showed me a carfax report with no open recalls. This recall has been open since Jan 2016 implying that I was sold the vehicle using fraudulent information. Also since then it has been 2 years with no remedy as the parts are not available. I contacted the customer service and was told they cannto help solve this.
My steering wheel started to click when I turned it, didn't think anything of it. I was recently pulling into a parking spot and my steering wheel made a loud pop and got stuck, then a loud crack again and started to work. It still clicks and now my passenger airbag light is on permanently. I went to the dealership in oxnard and they said it would be 175 to check about the airbags even though there is a recall. They also said they don't have the parts needed to my steering wheel. I do not feel safe at all driving this car. The horn doesn't work and neither do any of the buttons on my steering wheel.
Takata inflators (passenger side) grounding cables in steering wheel.
I purchased my used car at jerry damson 3/17/18 and this car has been at the mercedes dealer stating this is unable to drive, they reset a light that damson described from removing the seat, it appear that it has came back on. It was here the entire 30days warranty I had. Im upset! it was smoking and cracking and making all sorts of noise along with the horn and buttons do not work. Mercedes says no way to fix this and can not drive this unsafe car. I have not had this car 10 full days!! its still there. They are saying I should pay for this and it clearly states that mercedes will. Help!!!!! my car was in motion. My car is still at the dealer for this issue help!!.

I just got off the phone with mbusa customer service about the takata recall. In the letter sent out, it states that a passenger- side inflator explosion during deployment could result in sharp metal fragments striking the front passenger or other occupants, possibly causing serious injury or death. but that there are no parts available to fix this possible dangerous situation if it happens to occur. I told the phone representative I feel unsafe driving my car, especially with my son with me and asked if mb can offer me a rental car until the parts are available to fix the recall. She said mb at this time is not in the position to offer rental cars. And I replied you are saying that mb is not willing to give me a rental car while you have sent out a recall stating I can be in danger but are unable to fix the problem?. And she repeated that mb is not in the position to offer rental cars at this time. I feel like there should be something mercedes should do. I understand mb is sending out the recall notices to save themselves if something does happen to a driver due to the recall, and I am assuming they are hoping customers just disregard the notice. If a customer, such as myself feels unsafe because of this recall and if mb is not going to resolve it now, then what are my options ?.
Takata inflators-I currently have 2 recalls on my car; one 10/05/17 NHTSA 17v627 and other one from 1/10/18 #18v043 with the airbags. Neither one has a remedy yet and I was told this weekend at the dealer to not let anyone sit in the passenger side due to danger. This is not an option for me. I was also told the earlier recall is also dangerous yet no eta on repairs. I am single parent with college student as well as handicap mother in her 80s . . . I need this fixed now. . . . . Just to be told I will be contacted when there is a repair is not an answer. I am terrified to drive the car and have no options on this. Please help put my car in priority line for repair or else I should have lkq loaner until it is repaired. My car suffered flood damage at 4 months of age in 2014 and I am very concerned parts were compromised that could affect this even more! (the car was purchased in south florida and we moved to GA 2015 thus high humidity exposure).
I need to have the recall taken care of. Nothing happen yet!.
Too long waiting for accident to happen. Haven't had an incident, but the longer the wait, the greater the possibilty. When will the parts be available ?.
Big sound.
Tl- the contact owns a 2014 mercedes-benz C250. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v627000 (air bags) however, the part needed for the repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted Mercedes Benz of arcadia at (626) 701-8904 located at 101 n santa anita Ave, arcadia, CA 91006 and was confirmed that part was not available for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not contacted and made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect. Aw.
I received a recall notice for the takata airbag inflators. My mercedes is affected; however, there has not been a fix provided.

Takata inflators involved on a car accident on 02/27/2017 were this vehicle air bags didn't deployed. This vehicle was a total loss and got paid off by my insurance but I am still hurt.
Driving on a four-lane street (two lanes on each side) with my two kids. The 2014 C250 had a malfunction with the electric steering: automatically jerking the car to the right. I lost control of the car and hit the curb. It felt like we went airborne. I turned the steering wheel to the left to try to stabilize the car, quickly realizing there was truck to the left I turned the steering wheel back to the right to avoid hitting the truck. This caused me to hit the curb again. It all happened so fast it was hard to stabilize the car. Mercedes-benz (expressed as mbusa) had my car for over a month. In their incident questionnaire they asked to grant permission to image the data contained in the vehicle's event data recorder (edr). I sent the questionnaire to my insurance, and we didn't not grant mbusa permission as the lessee. Mbusa broke the law and went without my permission and imaged the data. Than came back and stated that they would not cover the damage, as the edr stated that I hit the curb. Mbusa expressed that I would have to pay out of pocket for their malfunction. I asked for a copy of the recorded conversation and I want the report. It was expressed by mbusa that I would have to get a court subpoena for them to give me the information. I called a attorney and this is against the law; and is all tactics/strategies on mbusa part to not take responsibility because they would by law have to report it to national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA). All I wanted was to keep my family safe, and for mbusa to take the car back as it was around 3 months old when the accident accused. If I fight this: just to get someone to review the edr will cost around $10,000. Great business strategy mbusa in keeping your customers safe until someone dies because of your lack of humility!.
The steering wheel ,has aluminum plating or covering, that was peeling off and cut my finger as I was driving, this happened last year and was still under warranty, and dealer replaced, this is happening again, and the dealer has agreed to replace even though the warranty has expired. I thought you guys should know.
