36 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly have been reported for the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Filled up gas tank and had fuel odor inside car and fuel leaking outside the car until fuel level was around 3/4 of a tank. I believe that mine falls under all the other problems listed for fuel leaks for other w211 mercedes. The extended warranty for this was only allowed for original owners and not for anyone that purchased used.
When I fill the tank wits gas(not topped off) when I drive it hom park it in garage it smell of a strong gas order. Afresh drivibg a little ( to use gas) it goes away, happens each time I fill.
I have a 2005 E320 Mercedes Benz. Every time we fill the tank we get a strong gas smell inside the vehicle. After we drive the vehicle for a while with the windows open the smell dissipates. The smell is coming from under the rear seats. I suspect the seal on the gas tank has failed. This is a design flaw that should be taken care of by the manufacture. It is not a normal wear and tear item. My concern is fuel fumes can impair ones driving ability and leaking fuel can create a safety hazard. With the number of complaints that I have come across I feel that there should be a re-call to correct.
The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that there was a fuel odor in the vehicle and fuel was accumulating into the fuel access compartment under the rear seat. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. The failure caused electrical wires to be submerged in the fuel. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Re complaint number 10778442 since the last report the situation has gotten much worse. Initially the gasoline fumes would occur while the tank was more than 1/2 full. Now the fumes are very very strong when the tank is full but remain strong even as the fuel indicator nears the empty mark. This this the only vehicle I own and my family and myself cannot remain in the car for more than a few moments. The fume are overpowering and this is a major health concern wise as well as a chance of fire.
After fueling and the gas tank indicator shows full there is a very strong odor of gasoline in the cabin it is so strong that we must drive with windows down and sunroof open. In rainy or cold weather that is not a good option. The fumes dissipate after the fuel indicator nears the 1/2 full mark is very unhealthy to breathe in these fumes and there is also a fire risk.
This car has only 43,000 miles with perfect maintenance. It has never been hit. The car is leaking fuel from the tank for no obvious reasons. The dealer says that the there was a design problem and the tank needs to be replaced for $2000+. It is a major safety issue.
Had to spend thousands of dollars to replace faulty gas tank. Gas pooled under back passenger seats that was very dangerous. When I googled "mercedes gas tank leak" I saw many others had the same problem. Why have the defective , dangerous , plastic tanks have not been recalled.
When filled up the gas tank with gas a very strong smell of gas will be smelled every time when parked. Also, in our house garage.
A strong fuel odor was noticed on the rear driver's side of the vehicle after driving the car with a nearly full tank of gas. I removed the access panel beneath the rear seat on the driver's side and discovered fuel collecting in the well around the fuel sending unit. This is the second time in 3 years/30,000 miles that I have had this fuel leak. The first leak was repaired 3 years ago by replacing the fuel sending unit with a mercedes oem unit. Clearly, mercedes has not addressed the part/materials reliability issue that so many owners of the w211 e-class are experiencing. I am convinced that this is a design flaw in the fuel system of this vehicle and a recall of this vehicle model is warranted. This very well may be the last Mercedes Benz vehicle that I ever purchase. Photos of the leaking fuel sender can be provided upon request.
On 02/24/2014 the emission light came on the. The code was pulled that informed that the car had a leak some where in the fuel system. The car was taken to Mercedes Benz of south mississippi, they informed me that there was a leak in the upper fuel tank under the back seat, and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The report said: to replace cracked fuel tank evaporation system has a leak. The repair would be $2100. 00 to replace the fuel tank.
Fuel smells from the tank fuel. It sometimes leaks and marks can be seen on the ground. The smell is worse when I put full tank of gas. The smell is so strong that I have to park the car far from the house to avoid endengaring my family since the smell can get into the house if the car is parked in my garage. Driving in such condition puts me at risk since the smell is so bothersome. I have had to roll the window down even in very cold weather in order to get fresh air. I went to a mercedes dealership where they suggested that the tank was the problem and it needed to be replace at my cost. According to them, it was not my fault that the tank had issues but they refused to pay for it.
I noticed a strong fuel smell after a fillup, one more than one occasion, and the repair shop diagnosed a problem with the sensors and that fuel had leaked onto the top of the tank. . They did a repair job of over $1000 in December 2013. Then 3 months later, after a fill up I again noticed the strong fuel smell when the car was parked in my garage, and this time the service repair shop said it was an actual fuel tank leak. Further online research indicates that this problem is not unique to me and has happened to many e series cars and yet Mercedes Benz hasn't addressed it with a recall (yet part wholesalers have multiple replacement tanks in stock).
There is a very strong smell of gasoline in the cabin of the car after I fill the gas tank. The smell persists until about one-eighth to one-quarter of the tank has been used then dissipates. I have read where this is a common problem for this class and year of mercedes. I just purchased the car. Is there a recall to solve this problem? if so, is there a reference number? if not, is there a service bulletin issued by your agency or by mercedes to its dealers to fix the problem. Mercedes should be compelled to fix this. The gas fumes are nearly incapacitating and certainly impair safe driving.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 mercedes E320. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer for regular maintenance service, the contact was informed there was a leak in the fuel tank valve. The contact was informed that the fuel tank would need replacing. The vehicle has since been repaired. The manufacturer has not been notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage 78,000. - ll.
When the gas tank is full, the car smells like pure gas. I took it to the dealership to be fixed, but they did a "patch" and made the smell so bad that it gave us all headaches even with the windows down. The dealership has had my car for 3 months now and nothing has been done. Mercedes needs to fix the issue, or give me a new car!.
I filed with your agency last year and never heard back I am the owner of a 2005 e class . After several calls to mercedes , the fuel tank was replaced at the dealership here in seattle last year. I paid for the repairs and mercedes paid for the new tank. My out of pocket for this repair was close to $2000. 00 it has been apprx 15 months and I have notice again some fuel smell inside my vehicle. Of course I was not given any paperwork for the replacement of the fuel tank, but is is on record at the dealership. I fell like I am driving on top of a fuel bomb and will I be the 1st victim of a terrible accident. I feel stuck with this car and the dealership pretends to have never heard of this fuel leak and fumes penetrating the interior of the car. What is happening with this issue? do not let mercedes get away with that. Thank you, pierre rajotte 2868 hi crest rd langley, wa 98260 206-495-1270.

Fuel leak, smell of gasoline in garage. Possible leaking fuel tank, leaking fuel sending unit or fuel sensor malfunction. It is dangerous and may cause fire or explosion due to the fuel leak. It needs to be recalled to fix this dangerous issue.
For the last several weeks we have smelled a gas odor in our garage and on the inside of our 2005 Mercedes Benz e-320. Since an odor of gas creates the possibility of a fire or environmental concern we scheduled an appointment for 01/22/2013 (today). The car is currently in fields motorcars - 209 s. Lake parker avenue, lakeland, FL 33801. We are also having the annual service done at this time. After inspection this morning, the mechanic advised our service writer that there is a leak in the fuel tank. Based on their recommendation the fuel tank is being replaced. Any fuel leak has a potential for dangerous and fatal consequences. The cost for this is approximately $2000. 00. I have been advised the fuel tank leak is not covered by the factory warranty, nor is there a government mandated recall. The vehicle is tentatively scheduled to be completed and returned to us tomorrow, 01/23/2013. In researching the fuel tank leak in our vehicle, I have found there is ample information indicating the fuel tank leaking issue is not limited to my vehicle. I also noted that in February, 2012 the NHTSA has opened up an investigation into this matter. In addition, the texas law firm wigington, rumley dunn & ritch along with georgia law firm conley griggs partin filed a class action lawsuit on July 18, 2012, against mercedes-benz, USA and its german parent corporation daimler on behalf of thousands of consumers who purchased model year 2003-2009 mercedes-benz e-class vehicles. As a consumer placed in these dangerous circumstances without relief by the manufacturer, I desire to share this information with NHTSA to assist them with their investigation regarding the 2003 ¿ 2009 Mercedes Benz e class fuel tank leaks. We have owned the vehicle since new and it has approximately 44,000 miles on the odometer.
Fuel leak in fuel tank. Around sending unit and somewhere else I can't track down.
Very strong fuel odor from car, looked under car expecting a leak but could not see anything, researched online further found similar stories posted by other owners of this vehicle. Asked my Mercedes Benz mechanic, he confirmed that there was a problem with the fuel tanks on these cars and benz refuses to issue a recall on them! cost according to my mechanic is approx $2000.
I purchased a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320 which has been garaged and very lightly driven. (only on weekends or days off) after six months and refueling a few times I started to notice an odor of gas in the cabin of the vehicle. This odor has gotten worse and stronger over time. The odor is also noticeable in the garage as well as around the exterior of the car. This seems like an indication that more gas is present and possibly leaking somewhere near the gas tank. I am fearful of driving it as the concern over fire is present as my kids ride in the rear seat. I would appreciate someone looking into/investigating this to see if it is indeed a mercedes problem and possible recall prospect.
The fuel tank leaks when tank is filled above 3/4 . Gas pools under rear seat and leaks under car.
One day I fill my tank with gas & when I get in my car I smell gasoline. I'm thinking I stepped in some gas at the gas station. I come home & park. As I exit my car & come around the passenger side I'm smelling gas. For the next few days the gas smell continues to suffocate me. I got on the internet & googled " I smell gas in my 2005 E320". I was shocked to see that lots of other people were having the same problem. The no-cost solution was not to fill your tank, only halfway but then your constantly stopping for gas smh. Why don't the dealers want to fix this problem?? is this the reputation that mercedes wants to create??.
The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that the fuel was leaking. There was also a strong gasoline odor emitting from the rear of the vehicle that would worsen when the fuel tank was refueled to capacity. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic but was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue who advised the contact that the vehicle was outside of warranty and provided no further assistance. Failure mileage was 98,000 and current mileage was 101,000.
Had to replace my gas tank twice due to smell of gas permeating the inside of the car. It is fine now but had to have it replaced twice to fix the problem.

The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated after refueling, a strong odor of would emit outside of the vehicle without any sign of fuel leakage on the ground. On a separate occasion when driving the engine warning indicator illuminated continuously on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated the fuel tank and fuel pump would need to be replaced. There was currently an open investigation under NHTSA action number pe12001 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump, fuel system ,gasoline: storage: tank assembly). The vehicle had not been repaired. The authorized dealer and manufacturer were notified of the defect. The failure mileage was 63,400. Updated 05/02/bf the consumer stated the dealer denied problem. Updated 05/12/2012.
When 2005 E320 has gas tank filled, there is an overwhelming fuel odor in the passenger compartment and outside the vehicle. The fumes disappate when the fuel level decreases from full to 3/4. Car was taken to mercedes dealer for service and this problem was listed for the repair person. They found no problem. Year and a half later, I again asked mercedes dealer to look at this issue. They said it was a leak in the fuel sending unit which is connected into the top of the gas tank. At a cost of $800, the fuel sending unit was replaced. I picked up the vehicle and the fuel smell inside the car was so strong it made me and two clients nauseous with severe headaches the following day. I returned the car to the dealer, and upon further inspection, they now tell me the fuel sending unit was leaking but the gas tank itself also is cracked and leaking which needs to be replaced for another $2,000. I opened a complaint with Mercedes Benz USA. After their sham of an investigation, they said they would offer me a 50% discount on the fuel tank replacement or assistance on the purchase of a new vehicle. The car now has 118,000 miles and is out of warranty. I have no choice but to make the repairs. You should not have to replace a gas tank on a vehicle of any age, and I am afraid of continued safety problems from poor engineering design with the replacement parts if the car is involved in any accident.

Start date is approximate. This issue has been going on for around 4 years. Car has smelled strongly of gasoline when filled over 3/4 a tank. Also, when filled over 3/4 a tank gas can be seen dripping down beside driver side rear tire. Have spent several hundred dollars trying to get issue fixed until I heard about the investigation. The "check engine" light is continuously on due to a "fuel system leak. " who knows how much this has cost me in wasted gas, and I'm constantly afraid someone is going to light a cigarette next to my car and blow themselves up.
Noticed a strong gas smell after fill ups. Brought the car to the dealer expecting it to be a seal or something but found out that the top of the tank is prone to cracking around the inlet. When the fuel is full it leaks. Apparently this is a common problem with the e class. Seems very dangerous to have a car that is only a few years old that has a problem with a leaky gas tank? I think it cost between 2k and 3k to replace the tank. I really don't think a car that is that expensive, that new should have a issue like this?.
The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that after refueling, there was a strong odor of gasoline inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that the fuel tank fill failed. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was not contacted.
