One problem related to steering rack and pinion has been reported for the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On a right turn the rack and pinion mechanical part failed. Steering became extremely difficult, and almost caused a move into oncoming traffic. The mechanical failure caused a blow back of fluid with metal filings into the power steering pump. The pump overflowed onto the belt. The belt then stressed the water pump until it too was broken. $8,000 worth of damage.
