Mercedes Benz E320 owners have reported 6 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The wires in the wiring harness connecting to the coils for the fuel injection system are disintegrating. Currently this is causing the car to loose power, run rough, only 2-4 cylinders are firing. My mechanic said he found on the web that this is happening a lot to mercedes cars made during the time period my car was made but mercedes never issued a recall for this huge problem. My cost to fix this problem was estimated at $3200. 00 or more depending on how much of the wiring system has disintegrated and what other systems are affected. I called mercedes on howe Ave in sacramento and after checking my VIN number said my car has never been recalled for this problem or any other problems.
Under normal driving condition engine started revving up to about 3500 rpm as if I pressed the accelerator pedal. Freaky experience but luckily the road wasn't too busy. I slowed down to the side of the road (was driving in portland oregon inner city area) by pressing the brakes and flipping the car into neutral but the engine kept revving up around 3000-4000rpm. When I turned the engine off and started it again, it wasn't so bad but the engine was still revving up and down by itself between about 750 and 2000rpm. I also noticed that the car had gone into - what I later read on internet to be called - limp home mode which made it very annoying for me to drive. Research on internet tells me my E320 wagon with the m104 engine has a type of biodegradable engine wiring harness which falls apart and should be replaced. I love my mercedes and it drives beautifully, but that wiring harness problem makes it a problematic car, and dangerous too. I am not willing to spend $1,500 on a new harness from the dealer, since it is not a result of bad maintenance, but more a design flaw by Mercedes Benz ag. They should take their responsibility and do a recall. Surprised they didn't already do that (did they?) as I can imagine the big damage to the Mercedes Benz name and image if somebody were to end up in a fatal car crash due to a biodegradable wiring harness problem. Thanks.
Vehicle was acting normally up to incident. Entering highway accelerating like normal and pulled out in front of tractor trailer when suddenly car had dramatic and frightening loss of power. Full throttle did nothing. Downshifting did nothing. With truck horns blaring and near collision, I pulled off the road. Restarting cleared the problem. Dramatic loss of power has occurred three more times with no warning nor check engine light. Now light comes on with egr out of range code. Discussing this with other mercedes diesel owners points towards soot clogged egr valve and soot clogged intake manifold. How such a problem could occur so frequently at such a low mileage with a company known for diesels is unknown.

The car started having very strong vibrations at idle speed when car is in reverse or drive and stopped at a standstill with brake. Took it to shop and was informed that the vehicles motor mounts were in need of replacement, to the tune of over 600. 00. Once again I have read a similar complaint in the database and really want to know why mercedes has not acknowledged the fact that this is a trend in the vehicles and come up with some type of recall or fix for the situation. . . Maybe most owners just unbegrudgingly pay whatever necessary to have their cars fixed oblivious to the fact that mercedes claim to fame is quality, reliability and longevity. I for one do not think that a car costing over 60,000. 00 should be plagued by so many deficient manufacturing problems.

While driving my 2004 mb E320 to the local grocery store the engine stalled. I was pulling up to a red light at the time that turned green before I stopped. When I stepped on the gas to go, there was no power. I pulled to the side of the road and sat for several hours waiting for a tow truck. The local garage said I was out of gas, put ten dollars worth of gas in it, charged me $60. 00 and said the car was working fine. The next time my wife took the car out, it stalled again in nearly the same place. She was not as fortunate as I was and was stuck in the middle of the road. We had it towed back to our house and I looked up the symptoms on the internet. After letting it sit for a few days, I turned the car on and let it idle. After the car reached about 75 - 80 degrees, it shut off again. It turns out that it was the crank position sensor (cps) that went bad. I bought one, learned how to replace it and the car is running fine. The safety concern here is that while driving, the car just shuts off!! there is no warning whatsoever! thankfully there was not an accident.

Was driving on the highway and the car lost power. Took it in to the dealer and I was told that the problem cannot be duplicated. The car was in several times for repairs without success. Changed the egr valve to no avail. When the car looses power I have to restart it ,and then is fine for a while. Bought the car new an sill have it.
