Mercedes Benz E320 owners have reported 2 problems related to steering rack and pinion (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On a right turn the rack and pinion mechanical part failed. Steering became extremely difficult, and almost caused a move into oncoming traffic. The mechanical failure caused a blow back of fluid with metal filings into the power steering pump. The pump overflowed onto the belt. The belt then stressed the water pump until it too was broken. $8,000 worth of damage.

While making a left turn, the steering failed. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to a repair shop. The mechanic determined that the left arm seal on the rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced due to a worn out part. It was determined that there was a problem during the new vehicle warranty that was apparently repaired by fox valley mercedes. The consumer could not control the vehicle with all his strength. The technician determined that the left arm of the rack had a spontaneous seal failure, rendering the vehicle unsteerable and not controllable.
