Suspension Problems of Mercedes Benz E550 - part 1

While under a hard stop the vehicle’s rear end started to swing back and forth suddenly causing loss of control of the vehicle. Mercedes benz diagnosed the problem as a rusted through subframe which they’ve said is a “known issue” and extended the warranty on the part. The part is unavailable and there’s no eta from mercedes which means that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and cannot be repaired.

The vehicle felt like it was all over the road at highway speeds. Took it to a mechanic and the rear subframe had become weakened with premature rust. The mounting point for one of the rear suspension arms had broken off of the subframe and was making contact with my gas tank. I called the dealer to see if there were any recalls. No recalls for this issue however there are a few reports on this website. I have also been on forums for my vehicle and it is a very common problem on these vehicles. From what I gather this is a widespread issue, and the fact that it could possibly puncture a gas tank and cause serious injury that something should be done to correct the concern.

There is an ongoing issue with the front and rear air shocks. They don't inflate properly. Sometimes they inflate and sometimes they don't. This is a risk because my suspension system is not stable. The problem has been confirmed by astorg mercedes-benz. Yes, the problem has been inspected by an authorized mercedes-benz dealership. There was no indication beit warning lamps, messages, etc. , before the issue happened.

The contact owns a 2010 mercedes-benz e-550. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph the rear sub frame broke. The contact went across the highway but was able to recover control of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified but no additional was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 149,200.

The air suspension started leaning heavily on one side after being parked for 12+ hours. And 2 days ago, while warming up the car, air suspension did not stop pumping air until front right air strut blew up. It was really loud and unexpected, I was lucky the car was not driven when the explosion happened. Checking through forums, most people who own w212 e-class with airmatic suspension have issues with car lowering over night. This is a big safety concern that might lead to blow out of the strut(or multiple).

Driving home late going 75 mph in michigan when hitting brakes the car became unstable felt like it wanted to spin out of control. Hitting brakes at speeds above 30mph made car want to spin out of control. . Took car to mb dealer. Told them car was unsafe to drive and almost killed self hitting brakes. They test drove car and confirmed issue. Mb mechanic put car on lift found the left control arm trailing arm bracket welds had rust of the rear suspension cross member subframe!! this has rendered car unsafe and unoperational !! NHTSA needs to get involved force recall ! we are lucky to be alive!.

Rear k frame front part has completely rusted out. Mount ripped trail arm. Both rear tires were ready to shoot off. This was confirmed by a mechanic when the car was being serviced after the check engine light came on one day before taking it to be serviced. The car is not drivable. It only has 60,000 miles on it. It was always serviced at the mercedes dealers. It appears as a defective part.

The cars air suspension has gone out while driving its sagging to fenders. It's very dangerous.

When vehicle is parked overnight the front suspension frequently drops low to the ground with error message "vehicle too low". Vehicle loses air suspension ability to drive in lowered position.

Car was bought in 2017 with 100,000 miles,everything looks good, no special activity with the car , no long rides, just inside the city when it reached $120,000 miles the two rear air suspension just broke down for no reason, they have been replaced, now a year after the 2 front one just went down for no reason, very bad surprises while in the highway from airport home the car fell down the red light to pull over came up and it was hard to stop at the side of the way, since the tires and wheels couldn't turn no where since the whole front of the car just fell down so bad, very dangerous situation.

Air suspension appears to be leaking. After sitting in my garage overnight the body of the 2011 mercedes E550 is lowered by almost 2 inches. When I start the car after sitting less than 24 hours, a prompt on the dash information screen indicates "vehicle rising, please wait". The mercedes has just over 64,000 miles. In research of the issue, it appears to be a chronic malfunction with the w212 mercedes air suspension system, as well as several hundred to 1-2 thousand dollar repair.

I am now officially on my 3rd set of wheels, 16 flat tires, and now had to replace every single component in the air suspension almost 8k into the repairs.

"car too low" warning came on when I got in my car and drove about a block; I pulled over, looked around the entire car and then got back into my car; the 'car too low' warning had disappeared; the next morning I noticed that the right front tire was almost touching the fender; I contacted a local foreign car repair shop and was informed that the suspension had failed and that both shocks (which I was told had air bags) needed to be replaced; I have not driven this car 500 miles since I purchased it the 1st of February of this year (2019) but now since this has happened and with research this seems to be a problem with the mercedes car; if I had known I would not have purchased it.

I wish to report an issue with the air-matic suspension on my 2007 Mercedes Benz E550. I had the air struts replaced a few years ago with Mercedes Benz parts at the dealership and have driven approximately 16,000 miles since replacement without accident. The car has 36,000 miles currently and is driven exclusively in town, on paved roads, and garaged at home. On September 25, 2018 the strut on the front left (driver side) catastrophically failed causing the car to pull hard to the right as the front left dropped violently. I have contacted Mercedes Benz USA to report this issue for their investigation. My current information is the strut experienced an internal failure as reported by the mechanic, but would need further investigation to determine exact root cause. My concern is that this part failed suddenly without warning and if I were not traveling at a low rate of speed (approximately 30 mph), the outcome could have been far worse. I feel that given the low miles, newness of the part, and sudden failure, this could be an indication of a more serious issue with manufacture of this component and should be further investigated.

Rear and front suspensions not working very hard ride.

The airmatic suspension has malfunctioned! the air springs started deflating over night sometimes just on other nights all them and then other nights not at all now they will not inflate at all and is undrivable. Also the cooling fan runs constantly if the car is running!.

The airmatic suspension on this vehicle has premature wear as do many others. The air shock components leak air causing the car to lower dangerously to the ground. It occurs stationary, while in motion, at various driving situations.

In many Mercedes Benz vehicles with air ride suspension the "air struts" fail. This happened to mine. It can happen while sitting still or while driving at any speed on the roads. The dashboard goes red and tells you to stop driving as the suspension has gone too low. My suspension went all the way down and the front end was only a couple of inches off the ground. Very dangerous, at speeds of 70 mph on the interstate this could cause catastrophic issues. Mercedes benz has know about these problems for over a decade and still use these parts. Why has nothing been done about this? this is a very dangerous safety issue, that could cause death or serious injury to the driver, occupant, or others on the road.

I've had problems with these air suspensions, it appears they are made to fail to make the owner spend money every year, I've had all types of malfunctioning without anything major happening to the car. I spent over 2500$ replacing the rear suspension after it spontaneously started malfunctioning being uneven etc. . And now not long after the rear ones messed up I'm having problems with the front ones. It is totally unacceptable these products function with fragility and leave the owner in a precarious position because the car will lower itself to a height where the car is unable to drive leaving the driver to pay potential thousands of dollars. . . And if the actual pump malfunctions you are looking at at least 6!grand for one part. I've already been taken for about 10000 from mercedes last year alone. . Please hold mercedes liable for future repairs to these air suspensions. Although nothing has happened the front is malfunctioning now and I don't have thousand to shell out again to mercedes.

Takata recall. Vehicle inoperable due to inflators not holding air. Car suspension sags while stationary. Warning comes on prompting driver to pull over.

My car drops over night. Some days my front would drop to the floor. Some days my rear and some days the whole car will be on the floor.

The rear suspension air bags, solenoid distribution valve and airmatic compressor require replacement according to the mercedes dealership service department. Rear suspension drops nearly to the ground while vehicle is stationary and vehicle is unsafe to operate.

1- new complete brake jobs done by mercedes dealer but the shudder always there. Took them to mercedes dealer again for inspection and paid $90. 00 plus. Nothing wrong but the shudder is still there. 2- rear suspension keep dropping overnight park in a garage.

Airmatic suspension failure. Car has excessive lowering after overnight period of sitting and uneven ride.

Rear suspension drops overnight when temperature drops 45f. Multiple times during winter. Not seen during summer.

Front of the car drools evenly about every four hours regardless if driving or parked. Emergency stops required when driving.

Air suspension system is defective.
