Mercedes Benz E550 owners have reported 4 problems related to tank assembly (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When filling the gas tank all the way and stopping the delivery of fuel after the first click there is a strong smell of gasoline when the car is parked (almost like a leak). The smell goes away after the fuel drops below 3/4 of a tank. This happens every time.

Please reference NHTSA action# pe12001. After filling the car with gasoline, there is a very strong odor of gasoline. The smell of gasoline goes away after using about a 1/4 of the tank. I am aware that this is a widespread issue with e class (w211) vehicles and Mercedes Benz has been denying any responsibility. I have not taken the car to the dealer yet and would be more than happy to allow the NHTSA to inspect my vehicle.

Most of the enclosed questions do not apply. The reason is that about a year ago we started smelling "gas" fumes in our garage from our car. My daughter's bedroom is above the garage. We asked the dealership to look into it and they said they did not see a problem. We started parking our car in the garage again and my daughter started getting sick she said from the gas fumes. It is now very apparent that this mercedes E550 is leaking fumes from the gas tank. This is very dangerous both from an explosive component and from a day to day health/safety issue because many bedrooms are above the garage like with my family. This needs to be looked at ASAP from NHTSA before someone dies.

This is in reference to NHTSA action number pe12001. Many owners of w211 mercedes products (e-class, model years 2003-2009) report fuel leaks and strong fuel fumes after a filling the tank. I am also experiencing this issue, with the strongest gasoline smell occurring around the driver's-side rear wheel well. This issue is reportedly with either the filler tube, the gasoline tank, or a combination of both parts. Many owners have fixed their issues by replacing both the filler tube and the tank at a cost of around $2000, or less depending on the owner's success in negotiating dealer participation in cost. I am holding off repairing this issue to see if Mercedes Benz initiates a recall based on NHTSA recommendations.
