The contact owns a 1999 Mercedes Benz e55. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a loud popping noise outside of the vehicle. Suddenly, the steering wheel began to turn to the right and the front passenger side of the vehicle collapsed onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer, who stated that the passenger side upper spring perch fractured, which resulted in a separation from the frame. The contact was waiting for a response from the dealer regarding the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

2001 Mercedes Benz e320. Front spring perch surrounding perch structure is rusting through underneath the factory undercoating. We have a 2" rust through right next to the spring perch. Surround perimteter of around 5" radius show extensive rust of varioous degree. The rust is so extensive that it compromises the vehicel safety. Catastrophic failure is very possible. This rust around front suspension spring perch is prevalent in earlier w210 body chassis from 1996 to 2002. Canadian government has made mb do a recall service. United kingdom also have massive issues with the spring perch. Since these cars are at least 9 years old and as old as 15 years old. . . The rust has gotten to certain point in various degree from catastrophic failure to impending catastrophic failure. You need to scrape suspect flaking undercoating to reveal the extensive rust behind it. Otherwise, the undercoating masks the potential safety issues.

I own a Mercedes Benz e-500, 2003, with only 31,700 miles on it. On Friday, July 16, I had it serviced at my local mb dealer in larchmont, NY. On Sunday, July 18, as I started the car in my garage, a warning message appeared saying "stop. Car too low". I have contacted the dealer and they will look at it but, I believe it is a failure of the front right (passenger side) airmatic suspension, the car is obviously out of warranty but I can't believe that, after only 31,700 miles, that such a part can fail. I'm rather hesitant to drive it to the dealer but they are assuring me that it is safe to drive. In my research I found that mb has had similar complaints on this type of part and I wish for the NHTSA to take some sort of action to force mb to address this issue. Thank you.

On or about June 22, 2009, I was driving home on interstate 64 when the left front spring broke for no apparent reason. I did not hit a pot hole and the car was not involved in an accident. This caused the left front shock to immediately break. The front end of the car fell onto the tire while driving 70 mph. I had to have the vehicle towed. The mercedes dealer could offer no explanation for this problem. I corresponded by e-mail with 2 mercedes representatives who told me they could do nothing for me because the car was out of warranty. The warranty was out at 50,000. 00 miles and the car had approx. 56,000. 00 miles at the time. I explained that I knew the car was out of warranty when I called, however, I consider this to be a premature failure that could have caused an accident resulting in serious injury or death. The mercedes reps told me I purchased the car as a used vehicle and they could do nothing and hoped that my confidence in mercedes would be restored as I continued drive the vehicle. The mercedes dealership told me the car would not be safe unless I replaced the spring and shock on both sides. The repair bill was just under $1,800. 00.

I am writing regarding an investigation into Mercedes Benz e300 (w210 chassis) failures. While driving on the massachusetts turnpike, route 90 on Monday, my spring perch failed, broke away from the vehicle and was lost on the highway. The perch let go with a very loud bang, then a pronounced bump (presumably as the rear tire drove over the spring assembly. ) the car suddenly dropped hard on the front right bump stops. Lots of warning lights - bas, asr, etc. I thought I blew a tire or hit some road damage. Surprisingly, just a little swerve in the left lane and I made it to the right shoulder after a 1/4 mile. . I own a 1996 mercedes 300d the front spring retainer rusted out and the front right car collapsed. This is a common problem with all 1996 1997 1998 mercedes the part is part of the unibody. The rust cannot be seen by the human eye because it rust behind the retainer. If I had riding 60 miles a hour I think the car would roll over. I bought the car new it has 103 thousand miles and is garage kept. It cost me $571. 00 to have it fixed. I asked the dealer to repay me for the cost they refused. This has happen before on other such models.

On April 27, 2008 my car's front left side spring failed when driving back home at a speed of 30 mph. If I had been driving on the freeway, I may have lost control and got into an accident. When the perch ripped off, it sounds like my wheel came off. The steering was jammed and I pulled over to the shoulder and found the spring on the pavement. On may 3, 2008 I drove to nearest auto shop which is about 2 miles away and paid $80 for an initial check up and they found out that they couldn't fix it. The spring perch rusted away and broke. I complained with Mercedes Benz USA and I did not get any answer from them. It's been in my garage for five months.

I have had 4 mercedes so far, 1984 300d, 1987 sel 420, 1991 300d and this 1999 e300d. I've never had any problems with the spring perches with the 3 older models but, this 1999 e300d had this problem. This 1999 e300d will be the last mercedes I will ever own.

The spring right upper spring mount on my 1996 mb e300 rusted through. The car dropper and I hit the street, ruined my radiator, and the total repair costs are greater than $4000 (verbal estimate). I reported this to Mercedes Benz na and spoke to ron st pierre the ne regional manager ( 800-526-0315 x7125) who told me that the car was old and mb was not responsible for this. Upon searching the NHTSA web site, I have seen about 10 + reports or similar complaints going back 1 or 2 years and nothing from mb reporting this as a problem. The car has been well maintained by a single garage, they have seen a number of these failures, and warned me about this when it happened. I am currently without a car. This is a serious safety issue and potentially a risk of loss of control.
: the contact stated while the vehicle was at a stop, the front end collapsed to the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where it was determined the front driver side spring perch fractured. The spring perch was replaced.
Fail of spring perch on 1999 mercedes e-class due to poor manufacturing process possible resulting in fatal injury.
: the contact stated the vehicle was making a noise in the front end. The vehicle was taken to the contact's repair shop and determined the upper spring support on the driver's side broke. The contact welded in a new upper spring support.
Right front spring perch mount broke on my 1996 e300d mercedes while beginning to make a right hand turn from a stop sign controlled intersection. Vehicle gave no forewarning signs, and had in-fact just been serviced week prior. Mercedes denies any defect, and I had to pay for towing and repair completely. Thank god it did not occur at highway speed! I am now reading that this is happening to hundreds of mercedes owners, and I just wanted to report my own experience!.
Severe rust damage to front passenger suspension component and front frame rail. Rust hole big enough to put a human fist into. Approximately $3000 in rust repairs, on a car with less than 67,000 miles on it.
This is not a failure yet, but a major safety concern. I have a 96 mercedes e300d, and this particular model the so called w210 model has a major issue with the front spring perches. They are welded on and tend to rust out and fail, meaning that the car will drop to the ground. This could cause major and serious damage if the collapse occurs at highway speeds. My car at this time is not too bad, but in the future this might become an issue. Please visti this thread to see what I am talking about. This is from a forum that I use to work on my mercedes vehicles. . Read more...
