Mercedes Benz E Class owners have reported 4 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving car on a local excursion of approximately 30 miles, I noticed that the steering wheel no longer lined up strait. Toward the end of the trip, I noted what seemed like steering irregularities, then a rubbing/ whining noise coming from the front left. After arriving home after dark, I could smell hot rubber. Also the left front tire was hot to the touch. The next morning, I removed my front left tire to inspect the area. I found the end of the lower control arm cracked open from the bottom and bent upward. The control arm is hollow and appeared to have rusted from the inside out, which apparently caused the failure. The lower ball joint was bent inward and the drivers side front of the car was lower than the passenger side. During my travels, I had not hit any bumps to cause such damage. Had this broken all the way through, I would likely have lost control of the vehicle. I feel very lucky. After an online search, I found two other incidents of this happening in this model mercedes. Also, my independent mercedes repair shop has seen this failure before.

2001 benz e320 wheel bearings failed. *****
the consumer noticed a scraping noise coming from the front passengers side of the vehicle. The noise became progressively worse until the vehicle became undrivable. The consumer also noticed that the vehicle was pulling to the right. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who indicated that the vehicle needed new bearings on both front wheels and a new left spindle, rotor and brake pads. The dealer has replaced the instrument cluster (3 times), fuel level sensor, oil level sensor, a/c control and regulators ( 3 times), steering lock and key, right headlight assembly, both catalytic converters and the right rear window regulator. All these repairs were covered under warranty.

I own a 2003 e-class Mercedes Benz purchased this year from ralley motors, roslyn, new york. Since I took the title to the vehicle, there has been uncontrolled mild acceleration at low speeds, the car bucks and shakes upon DE-acceleration resulting in my having lost control of the vehicle and consequently requiring my jamming abruptly on the brakes to avoid hitting another vehicles and pedestrians. In addition, the car had significantly steered to the right at all times, requiring my constantly having to steer to the left in order to drive straight ahead. The dealership has admitted that it can not repair the transmission problem, ie; the uncontrolled change of speed, bucking and acceleration of the motor vehicle. They have also replaced the instrument cluster which I believe is an important vehicle computer which controls many systems of the car, and the vehicle now has the third instrument cluster, all in one year of ownership, all due to product defects! the service manager has admitted to me that there is a design defect in the transmission which there allegedly is no fix to correct the problem. I was informed that due to horrible gas mileage, the torque converter of the transmission is specifically designed to lock up at low speeds, and this is the reason why the 2003 and 2004 e-class automobiles have this transmission problem. The service manager had advised me that he know of no fix from the factory. The dealership became frustrated when I expressed my displeasure, and has now informed me that they will no longer service my brand new automobile. The consumer stated the engine stalled, the wiper blades were noisy.
