A flash from the right headlight had occured. I thought it was the bulb, but turns out the ballist was shorted out. I removed the assembly from the vehicle to change the ballist and because I want to also change the lens on the assembly. When I got the old lens off, I found most of the wiring has heat distress, causing the casings to flake off. I have photos of this issue. The headlights are a high energy assembly and this unsafe condition can lead to a vehicle fire if not taken care of immediately.
' '['? /the right front headlight was replaced (after receiving a headlight warning) approximately about a year after the warranty expired. The dealership claimed this was due to moisture in the headlight. In August 2021, the left front headlight showed to be having issues with the same error message. Upon further inspection, the mechanic noticed that it was not moisture in the headlight that was causing the short, but an oily substance. The mechanic believes that there might be a bushing in the headlight that might be melting/breaking down due to the heat. This is causing the headlight to short and require a $3500 replacement.
Rain leaked in through the back causing the rear sam to be filled with water. This caused all of my taillights to go out. I saw a recall for vehicles with the same year as mine but there is no recall for the gl 450 that I can find. I called mercedes which yielded nothing. They told me the recalls are VIN specific, not vehicle specific. I guess my VIN wasn't chosed even though it has the same issue as the ones they recalled in 2009. This is a new sam. It was replaced by us when we bought the vehicle used.
Takata inflators : the srs light is continuously staying on in the vehicle. As soon as the vehicle is started the light comes on and does not go off until the vehicle goes back off.
Driving down the freeway at 60 mph, a message was displayed on the instrument panel "blind spot assist inoperative," and the turn indicators stopped working, both left and right. Had to exit the freeway, but was not able to indicate to other drivers that I was changing lanes, as turn indicators were not working. Came to parking lot, shut the engine off and started back up, then the turn indicators started working along with blind spot assist. However, the issue came back after driving a few more miles. This problem also happened on the surface roads traveling at 35 mph.
