2 Steering problem of the 2017 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 02/24/2026

I am filing a formal safety complaint regarding my mercedes-benz Metris serviced at mercedes-benz coconut creek (florida) under recall vs2las561 – 9789vmcrc (customer service case #20781216). On February 12th, I delivered the vehicle for recall service. It was returned on February 23rd without the recall properly completed. Invoice no. 328897 – tag t9514 lists replacement of four continental 235/55 r17 tires and installation of four prs sensor repair kits. These items were not installed. The tires were placed in the trunk, and only three used sensors are present; one wheel has no sensor. Additionally, the dealership provided 235/55 r17 tires, while the vehicle is homologated for 225/55 r17. Supplying non-approved tire sizes represents a safety concern. Since purchase (from the same dealership), I have reported tire pressure irregularities and abnormal lateral tire wear. During the most recent service, no tire rotation was performed despite documented uneven wear. Two weeks prior to the recall visit, I experienced a highway tire blowout while traveling with my family. When attempting to install the spare tire, I discovered the wheel lock removal key had been removed during a prior mercedes service and not returned. I was unable to change the tire and required roadside assistance. The lug bolts had to be forcibly removed by an external shop, potentially damaging wheel components. The dealership has not properly resolved these safety-related issues. I do not feel safe operating this vehicle under current conditions. I request investigation into: • recall execution compliance • tire size compliance with vehicle specifications • improper documentation of uninstalled parts • removal of required emergency equipment (wheel lock key) these issues present potential safety risks to vehicle occupants and other road users. Thanks.

4 Steering problem of the 2017 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 07/29/2025

Dealer says that power steering control unit/steering rack needs to be changed. Looks like same recall was there(17v-595) but my VIN number is not in mercedes system to be fixed. Happens when park. Steering was not working, van needs to be towed. Can you check if that should be part of recall?.

5 Steering problem of the 2016 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 01/13/2025

I was driving down a smooth straight highway at 60 mph when the power steering completely failed. After that the van was nearly impossible to turn even a slight amount. If the road had been a bunch of curves I wouldn't have been able to make it to a safe place to pull over. Mercedes had recall campaign #17v595000 that addressed this problem but when I called them they said there are no active recalls for my VIN number. This is a very dangerous failure and I hope you can look into it. Also the van only has 60,000 miles on it. Thanks.

6 Steering problem of the 2017 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 10/06/2024

This mercedes Metris is my wife's primary vehicle. She had the electric power steering stop working twice in six weeks. Each time the vehicle became barely controllable. Both times it happened on curvy mountain roads and she was barely able to keep control of the vehicle and is now afraid to drive it. We took it into the local mercedes dealership twice and spent over a $1,000 the first time to remedy the problem. The second time they recommended replacing the steering rack at a cost of $5,000. We were six years into a seven year warranty with 92,000 miles on the vehicle. The dealership pulled a fast one on us and managed to work their way out of having to cover the warranty repairs. I investigated the problem, have found there are other Metris's with the same issues and am starting to believe it is not the steering rack, but more likely the steering servo motor, steering control module or the steering control software. As such we haven't been able to have it repaired as it appears the dealership has not thoroughly investigated the failure and ducked out of the warranty responsibility. Mercedes should be on top of this, as it's a serious safety hazard which endangers the lives of the occupants of our Metris and the surrounding vehicles. When the steering fails the dash turns red with warnings and it stops working within a couple of seconds. It also activates fault code p0635.

Failure Date: 04/11/2024

Power steering malfunction caused by computer glitch when we had a bump. Seenhtsa recall #17v-595 for earlier manufactured Metris. Yes- available for inspection. Yes, loss of power steering endangered us an anything in our path as we attempted to steer the van without powered steering I don’t know if it can be confirmed by a independent service center, but there is a history of this with other owners and I assumed it can. It has been inspected by a merecedes service center, see the enclosed repair estimate. No warning ,a bell dinged a red service message came on when we hit the bump.

13 Steering problem of the 2016 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 03/05/2023

I lost all ability to steer the van. When the steering wheel was turned, a noise was made, but the vehicle did not respond. The vehicle had to be towed to a repair shop. Upon inspection, the mechanic told us the power steering motor had completely broken off and was hanging loose of the rack and pinion/gear system that should support it. A vehicle should be able to go more than 55,000 miles without the power steering motor falling off! there was no prior warning to the system breaking. We didn't see any warning lights or notice any steering issues prior to the break. The break occurred when we were slowing down to park. We were then unable to steer after parking. The local mechanic initially refused to complete the repair because he was able to locate a current recall with the exact problem our vehicle experienced (recall vs2schralu). The recall was for our state with the same make, model and year of our van. When we contacted the mercedes dealership, they stated our vehicle's VIN wasn't included in the recall identified by our mechanic. The mercedes employee offered to "look" at our vehicle, but said all fees would be our responsibility because the VIN wasn't included in the recall. We decided to go with a local mechanic because the mercedes dealership would have required a one-hour tow. Also, the dealership stated it could be up to 2 weeks before they could complete the repair. Our daughter requires a wheelchair and this is her accessible vehicle. She couldn't be without transportation for that length of time. The vehicle is now repaired. I'll upload the photos from the mechanic and the repair bill.

14 Steering problem of the 2016 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 09/25/2022

2016 Metris cargo van - 29k miles upon leaving gila bend, az headed west I entered the freeway onramp, driving over a grate in the pavement. The power steering warning light came on and I immediately lost power steering. I had the van towed back to chandler az for repairs. The dealer paid to replace the power steering rack. I have attached the work order that shows the repairs that were made. I am concerned that this didn't solve the problem and that this may occur again. I drive on mountain roads in the san diego, the eastern sierra and in arizona. I don't feel safe in this van losing steering at freeway speeds or down a mountain pass. Maureen in san diego.

15 Steering problem of the 2018 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 09/25/2022

Wheel speed sensors appear to fail on a routine basis (every 0-10 months), similar to the subject of recall 21v-042 on sprinter vans. Sensor failure disables most safety features of vehicles including abs, blind spot warning, assisted steering, and other safety features. The failure causes notable issues with handling/steering and braking. Failure at highway speed impacts vehicle driving stability and increases the risk of a crash. Dealer previously repaired under warranty in October or November 2021. Unit failed in traffic at highway speed again in September 2022. Contacted dealer and was informed they are not scheduling maintenance appointments at this time and would not reimburse the cost of repair by an outside mechanic. They would also not acknowledge whether the vehicle is safe to drive and would not give an estimate on when they would be able to schedule a service appointment. They recommended transporting the vehicle to another city for service but implied they would not reimburse costs of doing so. Having most safety systems dependent on a poorly designed part with a high failure rate is not acceptable.

16 Steering problem of the 2018 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 04/03/2022

Hi, I was driving at highway speeds, about 80mph through west texas where the speed limit is 80mph. I was pulling a trailer, there was a 40'ish mph side-wind blowing pushing the vehicle to the center divider. As I was passing a semi on the outside of a curve, as I came upon the bow wake, the vehicle was pushed towards the center divider and encountered the rumble strip. At which point the power steering malfunctioned and completely turned off, leaving only manual steering. There was an error on the display indicating power steering malfunction. It was an extreme driving environment, but within the limits of the law. With a lot of quick reaction, I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and continue on the the next safe location to stop, which was the next gas station. West texas is fairly desolate, and stopping on the side of the road did not appear to be a safe option. After some web research we found this was not an isolated incident and it has been noted before, NHTSA campaign number: 17v595. Additional research indicated that rebooting the vehicle would in fact re-enable the power steering, which it did. We were able to complete our destination. If my wife was driving we would be dead, along with a few others, without a doubt. We contacted mb, we were told to have a dealership conduct am inspection, I will contact them to get an estimate. I have owned the van for 3. 5 yrs, with about 52k on the odometer, this has never happened before, how on god's green earth is a dealership going to be able to anything besides read the computer and get the error message? anomalous malfunctions are incredibly to difficult to detect, they only occur when a very unique combination of events coincide. I ask you to look at case NHTSA 17v595. My vehicle was made 2-3 months after that event, I believe more than 3 vehicles were effected and it is an ticking time bomb for the owners of the vehicles affected. God be with them, as he was with us that moment.

17 Steering problem of the 2017 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 08/13/2021

I was driving in a very remote location in central utah on a paved utah state highway and I crossed a cattle guard at about 45 mph. Immediately after crossing the cattle guard, the power steering malfunctioned, an alarm sounded and this message in bright orange appeared on the instrument panel display “power steering malfunction. See owners manual". I immediately pulled over and stopped the vehicle. Luckily, I had cell service, so I called my mercedes-benz dealership and talked to someone in the service department and I also called my mechanic at an independent mercedes-benz shop. After these phone calls and I concluded that it would not harm the power steering system to drive, I decided to continue driving -- without power steering assist. It was hard to steer, but not unsafe on the rural 2-lane road nor on rural I-70. After driving about 30 miles in 1/2 hour, I stopped at a rest area and turned off the engine for about 10 minutes. When I restarted the vehicle, the power steering was again functional and has not malfunctioned since then. After returning home I called mercedes-benz national customer assistance center. They were very unhelpful. All they would tell was that there was no recall campaign for my vehicle for this issue and that my vehicle is no longer under warranty – information I already knew. The agent told me I should schedule an appointment with my dealership to run diagnostics on the vehicle - not done. This doesn’t make sense to me as the power steering is now functioning correctly. Safety risk: this failure of the electronically controlled power steering system only happens when the vehicle is moving at a higher speed and the tires cross some kind of rough area on the road, such as a cattle guard or a rumple strip, making steering very difficult. 18 Steering problem of the 2016 Mercedes Benz Metris

Failure Date: 04/21/2019

Loss of power steering when driving over cattle grates on two separate occasions. First time loss of power steering at 55mph on a two lane highway and second time loss of power steering at 30mph when entering a freeway on-ramp. An error message displays on the screen 'power steering malfunction see owners manual'. On both occasions we pulled off to the side of the road and turned off the engine, removed the key from the ignition, and waited a couple of minutes. After waiting a couple minutes, we inserted the key and started the engine to find the power steering error message was gone and power steering was restored to a fully functional state. The first and second loss of power steering were separated by a few days and around 500 miles.
