1 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 04/30/2012

My Ml320 vehicle was driven for approximately five hours round trip then parked for the evening. I attempted to start the vehicle the following morning and the vehicle would not start. After doing an exhaustive diagnostic on the vehicle. I removed the fuel pump from inside the fuel tank. I saw that the wiring harness/connector for the hot lead was black and brown in color and the plastic around the harness had melted. I took pictures and stored the pump. I emailed mercedes and asked them to get back with me since my wife and children had been in the vehicle and this is the family vehicle. I also read several forums and complaints on the internet reference mercedes fuel pumps including my specific model. I read how they have caught on fire. I also saw a picture of a fuel pump out of a ml 320 in 2006 that had caught fire and almost looked identical to my fuel pump I had removed. I have looked for recalls and still have not heard back from mercedes. I am at a loss on what to do or if there is anything I can do. I was told that mercedes knows about this problem but that hey are unlikely to do anything because of the cost. I want to report this in case something does happen to me and my family. It will be on record. Thank you for your time.

Fuel pump failure after 70,000 miles. Left stranded on the road. Had to call for a tow truck. Hammond tire and auto center in hammond,la contacted benson mercedes in metairie and was told several of these had appeared in recent months in his shop. Benson mercedes sent out the new fuel pump with several modifications made to bring the vehicle up to "compliance". I explained to them that it would have cost me approximately $200 to have it towed to metarie or baton rouge.

8 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 11/13/2003

I own a mercedes ml 320, 2001 model. The vehicle has had repeated failures since I purchased it new. The vehicle is now three years old and has 5700-0 miles on it. The most serious failures involve the fuel pump on this vehicle. The fuel pump has failed twice, with the most recent failure being 11/13/03. Large amounts of gas fumes fill the passenger compartment and a serious danger of explosion exist. The fuel pump location for this model is underneath the rear passenger seat and directly under where my children sit. Mercedes benz has been aware of the fuel pump problems for upwards of five years and have failed to correct it or acknowledge a problem with it. No recall or notices to the consumer. In addition the ml 320 model has a long list of other emmision failiures and overall failures. The fuel pump is the main item for my complaint and is a huge safety issue that should be looked into as well as their refusal to address the issue or acknowledge it. Other failures and issues on my car include: o-2 sensor, fuel filter, premature wear and replacement of brake pads (front and back), steering problems, throttle sticking at take off (at times), window motor, drivers side. Switch as failed twice in 57k miles and reason is switch is unable to handle designed amperage. Also a potential fire hazzard. No recall or notice and a repeated know part failure for this model year and other model years, rear emmission evaporator part. Also related to gas fumes in the interior of the vehicle and common failure item. (part name is not correct terminology), battery failure within one year, battery not designed for amperage load either and common failure. Also as fire risk. , numerous other failures that are not entirely safety related for this product. , a serious look into this vehicle and the companies actions regarding these repeated failures of fuel related items and other items is needed and requested.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

Based on a dealer reccomendation, I have become aware the Mercedes Benz has been conducting and unpublicised "campaign" to advise owners of certian of the ml series suvs of the desireability of "upgrading", at the owners expense, the fuel system including filters and lines. This is apparently in response to a number of fuel filter and fuel pump failures, ascribed by mercedes to "poor quality u. S. Fuel" these failures have the effect of immobilizing the car, without warning. These unexpected stoppages cn have very serious saftey implications if they occur in a moving traffic flow situation. Mercedes is well aware of this problem but has not directly informed owners and takes the position that it is not a saftey issue and therefore not subject to a recall. I believe that a documented problem, ascribable to faulty design or materials that can lead to a sudden and unexpected loss of power is a very serious hazard and should be corrected by the manufacturer.

10 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 12/02/2002

Car would crank but would not start. Brought to dealer they changed the fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter, and cleaned fuel injectors. Picked up car, worked fine for a couple of days then same problem happend again. Called dealer for a tow. Because at the time I was to drive to dealer the power steering went out making car inoperable. Dealer said the clamp that connects to the power steering hose came loose causing the power steering fluid to leak out. That problem seems to be fixed. My dealer addressed my original problem by thinking that my keys to the car were triggering some kind of antitheft device in the cars computer to keep it from starting, they gave me two new keys, worked fine for about 30 miles when this time while actually driving the car went completely dead, I was glad to be in a turn lane at the time. The two previous times it took about an hour for the car to restart this third time it took only about ten minutes. The dealer still remains baffled.

11 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 04/24/2002

On 04/24/02 my car started stalling out and not starting. It was towed to the nearest dealership. The fuel pump, fuel line, and fuel filter were repaired by 04/25/02. A terrible fuel smell took over the car and I returned it on 04/26/02. It was repaired and returned to me on 4/30/02. It started breaking down again on 05/05/02 and I took it in on 05/06/02. They had it for 10 days (until 05/16/02) and it broke down out of town on 05/25/02 where it remained for 21 days (until 06//15/02). It then broke down on the drive home (05/15/02)and I took it to the shop two days later (05/17/02, dealership closed). All of the problems are directly related to the fuel injectors, fuel pump and the entire system related to this but I have a 2 year old unreliable Mercedes Benz I am now paying to repair. I have contacted Mercedes Benz USA and they have been supportive of the service departments' repairs but I believe I have a car I can't sell, trade in or drive now and I paid $38,000. For it a year ago. Please instruct me on the best plan of action at this point.
