2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 11/03/2016

My wife drove the vehicle to work one day and when she was pulling out of the parking lot onto a busy street, the yellow triangle with exclamation point started to flash and engaged the brakes. My wife quickly pull over to the side of the street and made her way back into the parking lot while the brakes where engaging. My wife was unable to drive the vehicle home from work. We let the vehicle sit for several minutes and I was able to get the vehicle moving but the brakes were engaging again. I was able to get the vehicle back home. I have taking the vehicle to several shops and all the shops are saying that there is an issue with the traction control system. When driving the vehicle from one of the shops, as soon as I pulled out of the shop's parking lot the brakes engaged and the yellow triangle with exclamation was flashing. It did this for about 15 seconds caused the approaching vehicle from the rear to slam on their brakes to avoid rear ending me. The vehicle has become unsafe to drive because we just don't know if when it does this. It happens randomly usually after the vehicle as been sitting off for a several hours.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 08/15/2016

On more than one occasion, my 2001 merc benz Ml320 came to a complete stop and dramatically pulled to the right while I was driving at various speeds. The first time happened as I was making a right turn from a stand still. The second time happened as I was traveling at approximately 35-40 mph. Finally, the last two times occurred while I was on the highway traveling at approximately 65-70 mph. In all instances, the front brakes absolutely locked and my vehicle came to an approximately complete stop while pulling the steering to the right. Each event was a very frightening episode. Although I kept trying to accelerate, the brakes would not allow it. I had just enough momentum so that I could veer to the safety of the safety lane. The events all happened within a two (2) week period. . . Far, far too frequent for comfort. In all occasions, I was fortunate to not get rammed by the vehicles traveling behind me. Now that I have done a little research I am really disappointed that mercedes seems to be aware of the issue but has not taken this issue more seriously as it seems to not have been an isolated issue but rather one that has been consistent among fellow ml 320 vehicle owners. Lastly, I've only owned this truck for a two week period, and it has terrified me in this short time.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 07/31/2013

I was driving approximately 25 mph getting onto the highway when all of a sudden my brakes seemed to lock up. My vehicle jerked violently and I heard this awful grinding noise. I was narrowly missed by the vehicle behind me as the jerk slammed my vehicle to a halt and turned my wheels causing my steering wheel to jerk as well. I was able to pull off to the side of the road and sat there for a while and once again tried to proceed ahead and almost immediately the same incident happened. I called a tow truck and had the vehicle towed to a mercedes dealer who kept the vehicle for three days and could not recreate the issue however they stated that the yaw sensor came up as faulty during the diagnostic. I went to pick up the vehicle and as the tech drove it up it again started jerking. $1000 later the yaw sensor has been replaced but I feel like this issue is definitely a safety hazard. I am just thankful that my 18 month old son wasn't in the car with me at the time as had he been and someone hit us from behind because of the abrupt stop, he surely would have been injured. This needs to be looked into immediately and recalled as it is a safety issue. I believe that mercedes should deem this a recall, fixing the issue for those out there who have not yet experienced it and reimbursing those of us who have had to spend $1000 replacing what is supposed to be a system put in place for safety.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 07/04/2013

While driving, went over bump in road, and truck immediately lost speed. Pressure on gas pedal weakend. There was absolutely no acceleration. I pulled over after almost being hit, and turned vehicle off. Restarted and pull over into autozone to have them hook it up to diagnostic reader. It came back with several codes, that all stated "throttle pedal positioner malfunction" I have bought and replaced this item 4 times since this incident, and the problem still exists. I am forced to drive the vehicle because I have to get back and forth to work, but I'm always very afraid that this part is going to malfunction while in a busy intersection or street, and I along with my kids are going to be killed. It happens at least two to three time a week, sometimes more.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 12/31/2012

My 2002 Ml320 cluster display lights on my dash all light up, the check engine light comes on, the speedometer stops working actually goes to zero. Once the car comes to a complete stop it accelerates very slowly and will not shift out of first gear. This is very frightening for someone in traffic and this happens without warning. Please investigate this issue before someone is rear ended and dies.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

While driving on freeway in moderate traffic the car suddenly without any warning violently applied uneven power to different wheels, brake and sped up. Originally I thought we were having an earthquake as I was trying to regain control over car. After about 15 seconds as I slowed car resumed normal operation. About 10 miles later the action repeated making me fear a crash or roll over as I was fighting to regain control and exit freeway. Luckily I was able to exit and gain control. Ended up having car towed 175 miles home. Mechanic at dealership now says it was a defective yaw sensor designed to work in conjunction with the esp to prevent a roll over. However the defective sensor easily could have caused a roll over or a crash with a less experienced and physically strong driver. Indeed, had my wife been driving I do not know whether she could have controlled the vehicle. Had there been one of the many 18 wheelers immediately next to me I do not know whether I could have avoided a collision. After the fact in review on google I noted many very similar complaints for the same 2001 mbz Ml320. I believe there should be a recall before there is death or serious injury.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 08/05/2012

While driving around 50mph on the bqe road (NY), suddenly the bas/esp light came on, all the brakes engaged and car was coming to a stop. Warning light on a dashboard was flashing and at first I thought the engine died. Not realizing what is happening, I tried to add power/gas to the car, but the engine didn't want to go past 1000 rpm. Being in a fast lane and having hard time controlling the movement of the car, iâ??ve noticed overpowering smell of the brakes. I was absolutely shocked by the event as the traffic was heavy and I was just hoping no one will rear me. Stepping on the gas pedal had almost no result even though the motor was running. It then started to accelerate very slowly when my foot was pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor of the car. Some 5-10 minutes later, the car started to accelerate and behaving as nothing has happened. However, 15 minutes into the ride, the same thing happened and this time, I was driving in a slow lane - some 30-35 mph. I pulled over and let the car rest for about 5 minutes and it stared fine and drove fine for the rest of the evening. Once I parked the car, the bas esp light was still on and stayed on. I took the car very next day to a car mechanic, but the computer reading didnâ??t give any errors, faults nor notifications. By that time, the esp light was off once again. The incident recurred 3 days later while coming to a stop due to a traffic lights - some 15-20 mph. My mechanic (and my internet search) advised me to change the yaw sensor. I fully understand the sensor can become faulty, but fully engaging the brakes while traveling is extremely dangerous. I'm now waiting for the yaw sensor to be replaced.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Mercedes Benz Ml320. The contact stated while driving at approximate speeds of 60mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated to speeds of 70 mph without driver intent. The contact attempted to apply the brakes but to no avail. She then applied abrupt pressure to the brake pedal using both feet and the vehicle began to slowly decrease in speed. She was able to stop the vehicle by engaging the emergency brake and shifting into neutral. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where she was awaiting diagnostic testing. The failure and current mileages were approximately 88,000.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

[Mercedes Benz ml 320 2002] while driving east on route 80 at 65 mph and approaching the toll booths of the george washington bridge, I tapped my brakes to disengage my speed control. The speed control did not shut down. I hit the brake pedal several more times harder and harder, but the speed control stayed in control. I pushed down very hard on the brake pedal with both feet and although the car slowed a little, the speed control dramatically speeded up the engine with the tachometer going almost full scale. I was able to reduce the car's speed from about 65 to under 50 mph, but was still pretty scared. This was a terrifying experience and as an engineer I realized my options and time to react were very limited! I figured my choices were few: 1) brake until the car either stopped or I had hit the stopped cars at the toll booths (maybe damage the transmission further), 2) shift the car into neutral hoping that either the speed control would disengage or at least I could stop the car (engine rpms might run away and destroy the engine), or 3) try to shut off the speed control with the control stalk on the left of the steering column (which I obviously could not read closely to figure out where the stop might be). Fortunately, with several tries I was able to find the stop position on the speed control stalk and disengage the control. I braked very hard to stop short of a collision. . . . . And got harsh words and looks from the adjacent toll collectors. I suspected that the brake light switch was not working and this was confirmed by my mechanic (eddie rodriguez of eddy's total auto care). The mechanic also has to replace the brake pressure sensor. My wife is insisting that I get rid of the car immediately and buy a new car. I love my ml 320. . . . . But I love my wife too!.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

I am the owner if a 2000 mercedes Ml320. This morning as I came home on this car and suddenly it sped up and lost control when it came to the driveway. I leg was on the brake when I came to the driveway no way I could have put my leg on the accelerator. I believe there is a defect in its design and cause it to suddenly speed up. Please look into this since it can be a serious matter. My other 2 cars in the garage were badly damaged in addition to the this Ml320.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

I was driving up hill in slow traffic for about 5 to 10 miles per hour for a few miles then all the sudden learned car did not respond to the gas pedal I put pressure on. The car jerk a little bid and won't move much only by the inches. Then I had to pull off the road. I turned off the engine and waited for few minutes and started again, turned around and cancelled my trip. A similar instance happened once before several years ago. I took the car to the dealer and they found nothing wrong.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 01/03/2007

I lightly tapped my accelerator to edge my car up the curb to drive onto our driveway and in a fraction of a second my 4 wheel drive was in full throttle. I quickly stomped on my brakes and was able to stop the car but it was like holding back a crew of horses. I had to brake all the way to the floor and thank goodness I have strong legs and quick reflexes. It accelerated so fast I could not have done it that fast even if I had pushed the accelerator myself. It left multiple 4' to 5' black scratch marks on our driveway and the skidding of tires (take off) was heard inside our house. Probably traveled 10' or so before I could stop it. No injuries but just shaken up. I called our dealer to inquire if there were any other incidences and they said no. I looked on the web and could not find any other incidences. Took to dealer the next day and they acknowledged some type of error notice from their computer related to my accelerator and did a fix of some type.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 09/08/2006

Mb ml 320 continued to accelerate while exiting a parking ramp while not touching the accelerator and with braking having no effect on reducing speed until car impacted wall.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 11/18/2005

I own a Mercedes Benz 2001 Ml320 and the lateral acceleration sensor failed around 15,000 miles and was replaced at my own expense. The bas/esp (break assist/electronic stability program) warning light comes on during each short or long trips and goes away after the vehicle sits for a while and restart of the engine and this started to occur after the warranty expired. The first replacement did not work because the wrong parts was used (so the dealer says) and the problem came right back but was corrected with the correct parts the second time (sometimes I feel the esp kicks in and breaking but that might just be my feeling). This could be a safety related issue and should be a recall item since customers that are used to these safety features may have wrong sense of feeling when the sensor fails unexpectedly at a time when this feature can avoid an accident.
