Engine compartment fire in 2006 S430 mercedes-benz ? January 16, 2014 as I accelerated to get on the road, I smelled a strange odor. I thought it was coming from a truck we passed. I opened the window & turned off the heater to clear the air in the car. In a few seconds, I closed the window and re-started the heater, which immediately filled the cabin with heavy smoke. I again stopped the heater and opened the window. The smoke cleared and smelled something burning. A few seconds later, I saw flames coming right out of the air duct grill in the hood. I pulled off I-275 between exits 63 and 65, on the right shoulder. I then hit the mercedes sos button. My passenger dialed 911. When the mbrace operator came on the line, I said that I had an engine fire, but the cabin was filling with smoke. I opened the hood, I grabbed my phone and exited the car. At this point, started taking photos. I took a windshield cleaner spray from the trunk, tried to extinguish the fire with it. It failed to have any effect. About at that time a good samaritan stopped his pickup truck. He had a fire extinguisher, which he used to put out the fire. A few minutes later the union township fire engine arrived, but the fire was out. They did a report. Then the union township police arrived. The officer said the report will be filed by the fire dept.

Two years ago the instrument cluster just quit while in hevey traffic. No speed no tac no gas no nothing and it could cause accident injury and further damage to the car also. This item was a federal mandate recall and mercedes says not so after 10 years and wont honor the law which stipulates its forever, and dealers insist on a buy of a new one cant even get one at cost.

First incident in October 2013 instrument panel suggested that rear lights were malfunctioning. Took in to mechanic and replaced fuse, then approx. 3 week later repeated malfunction, but now the instrument panel went dark. Replaced fuse again, after this time it lasted for another couple of weeks. Now it's December 2013 and the entire instrument panel is dark, no mileage, speedometer, fuel or safety gauges. Mechanic took another look and advised that it was the instrument cluster. I know there is a recall issued on this safety item. Would like to get some help resolving this issue.

Instrument panel blanked out while driving, creating an extremely dangerous scenario. This seems to be a repetitive complaint on line. Surprising that it is not part of the recall.

Is driving from work, on the way back home, when the instrument cluster of my 2001 mercedes-benz S430 suddenly turned black. Since it was getting dark, I panicked due to my inability to gauge the speed of my driving, as occasioned by a non-functioning instrument cluster, coupled with the fact that it was already getting dark. This part was actually replaced back in 29 sept 2006, as part of a recall. I was therefore disappointed that despite the recall, the part that they installed in 2006 would suffer the same fate. Clearly, this issue was never resolved through a design change. What made matters worse was that mercedes-benz corporate had refused to work with me to share in the cost of the replacement part. I am surprised since I had spent thousands of dollars in service and repair costs, since reliability is something that is deficient in mercedes-benz products. For this instrument cluster alone, I had to pay $1,572. 38 (inclusive of parts, labor, and sales tax). I request assistance in investigating this safety issue as well as getting help in having mercedes-benz defray the cost of this defective part.

All lighting on instrument panel began flickering on and off ,panel remained totally dark, no lights, nothing worked on steering wheel. I was driving about 50 mph and it was dark. Could not see any lighting on gauges. Took vehicle to dealer was told about recall on instrument cluster . After checking found out that my vehicle was not included in recall. I feel that it should have been included because my vehicle had all indications referred to in particular recall of instrument cluster. This needs to be investigated further.

Mercedes benz 2001 S430. Door assist not operational and fob/key will not lock doors nor will open trunk. Can not lock door while drive as usual while vehicle. Doors have to be forced close and no indication that door is ajar safety indicator show in the instrument panei. There is no way you will know the doors are ajar. Corrected by slamming door close before starting but key still won't operate trunk. Dealer thinks it's the pse or something else.

The instrument cluster juster flickered a few times and then immediately went dark. No gas gauge, the speedometer or other important elements of the cluster are not working. Contacted Mercedes Benz, still waiting for them to escalate. I am unable to pass emissions due to this. I am located in dekalb, georgia. Please assist as this a safety hazard due to no fault of my own. There was a recall/extended warranty, however I was unaware of it.

The instrument cluster went dark while driving back home on a major highway. You cannot read the vehicle's gauges, speedometer, and warning indicators, etc. The driver was unable to read the gauges and indicators, such as speedometer and increased the risk of a crash and major safety impact to occupants and to the public. This is a known issue with Mercedes Benz and I was told that, the vehicle is out of warranty. Would like to see dot make this issue a 100% safety recall on vehicles regardless of warrant period.

The gear shifter had locked initially out of the blue, I couldn't get the car out of drive. I turned it off to stop it and then it wouldn't go into park. After the mercedes tech came out it wouldn't start at all. The tech said it was most likely a safety feature which had kicked in. Then the whole right side went down. I am told the airmatic suspension went out. Why? the car said stop airmatic to low. I have never had any problems which may have lead up to these issues. Unfortunately I can not afford the $2,000 to repair this issue with the airmatic. Is there any kind of recall on this vehicle or warranty with mercedes that is responsible. The electrical problem is the radio going out for 2-3 months and then coming back on out of the blue. The door open signal not going off in the alerts. The trunk switch not working to open the trunk, it can only be opened manually. Lastly the headlights continually going out after replacing the bulb for 1 month. Rust and deterioration on the roof by the sunroof.

The instrument cluster fuse keeps blowing leaving my speedometer, fuel, etc. Completely inoperable. There was a recall issued in November of 2006 and I was told, by both the dealer and mbusa, that it expired in April of this year. I have been in contact with a local mb dealership and mbusa and both have declined to replace the defective unit after several requests. They said they would replace it, but at a cost of $1600. Currently, I can not see how fast I am going, how much gas I have in my car, etc. Because the obvious safety defect (and design defect) has been identified, I feel mbusa should back their product completely. I have 184k miles on the car (which is nothing for a Mercedes Benz). It has been serviced regularly and maintained very well, so the "defect" is not the result of normal wear and tear. I purchased a certified pre-owned 2004 Mercedes Benz S430-4matic in March 2007, after retiring. I also brought an extended warranty costing over $3000 dollars. I have returned this vehicle to a Mercedes Benz dealership for repairs over approximately 27 times since purchasing the vehicle. The problems include the electrical system (door locks); trunk lid lock, suspension system, tire pressure sensors, engine and engine cooling system (air conditioning system will only dispense cold air at 55 degrees and lower) and most recently the radio and navigation system are failing. Now that the warranties on the vehicle have expired the dealership will not repair the above problems under warranty. I filed a complaint with Mercedes Benz USA and I'm waiting for a decision regarding the repairs totaling over $4700. 00.

Complete failure of the instrument cluster thus leaving me with no information in regards to the functions of the automobile. "in the dark.

Contact states the there was complete brake failure at 23,000 miles. The vehicle was still under warranty. Service dealer stated they couldn't find what is wrong with the brakes. While driving at speeds above 40 mph the vehicle vibrated. On several occasion the vehicle would not stop when the brakes were applied. This resulted in several near accidents. The dealer/manufacturer were notified and concluded that the brake wear was normal wear and tear and that they just needed to be replaced. The center console would not open properly. The stereo's volume goes up and down. The power steering made a groaning noise when the steering wheel was turned in either direction, the power steering hose was tightened. This problem was worse when the vehicle was cold. The glove box would not open. The trunk release button was inoperative.
