Equipment Problems of Mercedes Benz SL500

Smoke coming from engine compartment. Upon closer examination found a piece of material from hood wedged between body of vehicle and exhaust manifold. Material caught fire. Vehicle was parked in driveway idling.

Engine wire harness has deteriorated due to mercedes' choice to use biodegradable wire insulation. Wires are shorting which almost led to an accident, could lead to a fire and have caused the anti slip regulator safety system to fail and the car to run in limp mode with substantially reduced power. Car was in motion when I lost power initially and at the time was surprised by the loss of power. I didn't know how to control almost causing an accident since the gas pedal stopped fully responding to input. I had no idea this was a common problem and am shocked to find out this has not been put out as a recall item.

Driving along on 2/14/2015, I hear a banging coming from the back of the car. I notice it only does it when I am excelling or braking. I thought there may be something in the trunk, like a liquid with something floating in it, banging up against the side of the container. After I parked, I checked out the box that I have put in the back of my car. There was nothing there that would make this noise. Upon further investigation, I see that there many complaints against the baffle that is inside the gas tank that comes lose and bangs the sides of the gas tank. This is not acceptable. I will take my car to the shop on Tuesday and see about repairs and having mb pay for it.

There is a constant swinging nouse in the wall behind the seats which is consistant to the problems a lot of owners are having. I have the same problem with my mercedes and the noise just seems to be something is free swinging inside the tank or around it which is very irritating for such a luxury vehicle. Please give me a solution to this problem that seems to be common when the vehicle is driven or stopping.

I own a 2003 Mercedes Benz Sl500. Like most owners of this vehicle, the baffle moves freely within the gas tank which causes a noise and is potentiall dangerous if a spark is created from the baffle hitting the inside walls of the gas tank. From my research it is a manufacture issue with the welding of the baffle to the internal wall of the gas tank. There is a tremendous amount of compliants and threads on mercedes forums.
