The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Cougar. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The battery was replaced and the contact received a jump start before he was able to start the vehicle. The vehicle remained on for a few minutes before stalling. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was advised that the alternator would need to be replaced. The alternator was replaced. The contact was able to drive the vehicle but found that the headlights were intermittently dimming. The contact was advised by the dealer and manufacturer that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 01v031000 (electrical system: battery: cables). The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate and that fuel was not traveling to the engine correctly even with a full tank of fuel. The dealer and manufacturer both advised that contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.
While driving at any speed and when the fuel level was at 1/4 full, the vehicle stalled. Currently when the fuel level is 1/2 full, the vehicle continued to stall. A technical service bulletin was issued concerning this problem. The vehicle would not restart until it was filled with gas. This problem occurred at any speed on all road types. (this problem also applied to the consumers second vehicle which the same make/model/year, VIN# 1zwft61l5y5609332, with the odometer reading of 60k miles).
While driving at any speed, when fuel level was at 1/4 full vehicle stalled. Currently, when the fuel tank level is at 1/2 full the vehicle still stalls. A technical service bulletin was issued concerning this problem. The vehicle would run out of gas when there was 1/4-1/2 tank of gas.
Fuel tank needs to be replaced . This is 3rd time due to faulty seal which causes fuel leakage .
