Battery light is on and has for awhile. Lights keep blowing fuses. And today I had to rip out a headlight or the car would have set on fire.

Ford headlights: cloudy lenses:
Ford made autos have plastic lenses/headlights that cloud up over time, within 5 years to 10 years, that limit effectiveness of the headlights at night. I personally have hit curbs and narrowly missed pedestrians etc due to inability to see them at night due to low headlight brightness. The Ford/Mercury dealer informs me that to replace the fogged lenses, I will have to pay him $350. 00 per headlight for a whole new assembly. Lenses are not sold separately, he says. Cannot be cleaned, he says. Why, why, why do you let Ford get by with selling cars that have these defective, prone to failure headlight lenses? people can't see where they are going at night! doesn't that concern you?
look through any parking lot, see the Ford products with darkened, ruined lenses. These are accidents waiting to happen to 1000's of drivers who can't afford $350 per headlight every 5
years or so!
Ford should recall these cars and/or offer reasonable cost replacements. $350 per lens is not reasonable!.

I also own a 99 Cougar and have had nothing but issues, but I love the way the car drives when it works correctly. I have also replaced the alternator and it's also on its 5th window motor, which still does not work correctly. I have replaced almost every sensor possible, too. Of course when I have questioned Mercury on these issues, they claim that it's not a common problem with the Cougars. I have heard from others on the tire issues, but luckily mine has not had any issues with tires. The newest issue with mine is the headlamps. I was in some heavy rain water in the beginning of oct. 2006 and they leaked and had puddles inside of them. I took it to be serviced by Mercury and I have not had my car back for 3. 5 months! in talking with Ford I have found out that they have not made any headlamps for the 99 Cougar since Jan. 2006 and they are on a nation wide backorder. To make a long story short, I am hoping that Ford will make things right for not stocking headlamps and putting me without a car for the past 3. 5 months.
Vehicle interior and headlights constantly brighten and dim when brake or gas pedal is applied. Brought it in to dealer on 11/26/04, alternator was replaced (100 dollars spent). Alternator had previously been replaced due to complete failure on christmas eve 2001. Now on third alternator. On Monday November 29, car began exhibited the same brightening and dimming effects. Brought to dealer and was informed that the wire between the battery and alternator could potentially have a problem. Dealer was nice enough to fix it for free. I have contacted Mercury corporate several times and asked to speak with someone who can actualy help me and and always told that I can't speak to anyone else. There are so many more things that have gone wrong with this car I dont even know where to begin.
Headlamps flicker- when my headlamps ,"flicker", they get so dim that I am concerned I will not see items in the path of my moving vehicle. I have had two near misses; one with an animal at large, the other much more serious, and a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The alternator replacement was done 2 times, battery replacement done once. When I brought it to the attention of my service advisor at Ford he stated that this is only a bulletin because it is not considered to be a safety issue since the lights do not go completely out. My children whom ride in this car and the pedestrian that I could not see would deem this a major safety concern right along with myself and other passengers who have experienced this problem in my vehicle. I only drive my car after dark because I have no other car.
The head lights on the vehicle were too dim.
While driving the vehicle an turning on the head light they became inoperable obtructing the drivers view. Also the battery failed, the dealer has been notified. Please provide further information. Nlm.
Both headlights continuously had condensation which dimmed the lights. Also the wiper motor failed after less than 36,000 miles and there were transmission problems prior to 50,000 miles.
When driving at night and stepping on gas pedal headlights go dim, then, they will brighten back up once foot is off gas pedal.
Oil filter combusted due to pressure. Engine has been destroyed!!! car is a year and a half old with 24,500 miles. I have a number of problems that have occurred with this car. I have ignored due to they come and go. Such as rattling noises from the trunk, cigarrette lighter is dead, gas gauge doesn't read properly all the time, lights illuminate for rear light out, airbags, coolant, next time start up car they are out??? I had a Saturn for 5 years never had a problem. I have this Cougar for a year and a half and look at all these problems. I am sorry a car that is a year and a half should not be getting a new engine!!!! I am extremely disappointed with Mercury. I will never get another one again.
Headlight failure while driving at night. Vehicle taken to dealer for repairs, and problem reoccurred. Vehicle back at dealer.
I feel the first problem I had resulted in the continuing degradation of this vehicle. No safety defect.
