Over past few weeks loosing acceleration especially on inclines and highway entrance ramps causing near collission as I can't speed up to highway speed and car behind me must brake at fast speeds. Engine light on. Mechanic says can't fix and contact Ford. My VIN # does not bring up recall but it matches recall notice summary stating contamination of filter in fuel delivery module (fdm) thi recall state 1999-2002 Cougars. Mine is 2001 bought new, under 70,000 mi with new fuel pump. This has been going on for weeks and scared to drive my only car. Please help.

When slowing down from highway speeds, approximately 70 mph, I tapped the brakes to disengage the cruse control, after making my exit in to a residential area the cruse control tried to resume my last recorded speed without me pressing any of the cruse controls. The car reached about 50mph in a 35mph zone and the rpm's spiked to about 5000 before I had to manually turn off the cruse control.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Cougar. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph in a driveway, there was a sudden increase in the acceleration. The vehicle failed to decelerate even as the contact applied the brakes. The contact was unable to control the failure and crashed into a house. The contact sustained a fractured left wrist. A police report was filed of the incident. The vehicle sustained severe front end damages. The vehicle was towed to a police impound lot. The manufacturer was not notified of the acceleration failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Since purchasing 2002 Mercury Cougar in January 2010 the vehicle hesitates, surges, and stalls at any rate of speed. Initially the problem was rare, then gradually occurred more frequently. This now happens at least weekly, sometimes several times per day. This issue has endangered me more times than I can currently recall. Replaced alternator, battery, egr valve and sensor, iac valve, and catalytic converter. The issue persists.
The contact owns a 1999 Mercury Cougar. The contact stated that the engine revs very high and then the vehicle begins to jerk. The contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions, but they have been unable to diagnose the cause of failure. The contact informed the manufacturer about the failure and mentioned that the dealer changed several parts. The manufacturer stated that there were no current recalls or service bulletins for this failure. The serpentine belt, throttle assembly, and vacuum tube were replaced, but the failure persists. The current and failure mileages were 183,000. The consumer stated believes dealer charged for unnecessary repairs, inaccurate diagnostics, and financial burden for car rentals and wants to be reimbursed all the outpocket expenses. Updated 09/05/07.
When traveling to visit my sister at college I was driving appox. 85mph but after stopping to stretch my legs at a rest stop I continued to try to reach my previous speed and when I tried to go over 80mph the car started to buck. I took it back to the dealership and I was told that the rpms could not go over a certain level so that basically they said that a 2000 Mercury Cougar is not able to reach speeds over 80mph.

Engine light came on I thaugh it would be an electrical problem, it was not. The car would jump and accelerate when stoping at traffic lights and stopped traffic when I would press on the gas lightly. Dealership said it would be $2000. To fix. I did not extend my Ford warranty. They said there was a hidden warranty with the engin and that I would have to pay $500. He aslo said I couldn't have been anything I did, the engine was coming apart, that would be the manufaturer's fault. I wish I would have not baught this Cougar, its been nothing but problems and recalls. I have went to the dealership so many time I've lost count.
The car has stalled on me 3 times while driving. The first time the vehicle stalled going up a driveway with the gas pedal pushed in. The second time the car was taveling at 20 mph turning a corner when vehicle stalled. 3rd time vehicle stalled at 5 mph with foot pressed on gas pedal. The car stalled and would not start up, causing it to hit a curb. The vehicle has been in to the dealership over 12 times, each time customer stating the same problem, however they do not have a solution. Vehicle also has a faulty coolant tank as the coolant light is always on, with no problems. The cars brakes make a strange noise with new brakes replaced from a recall. Many other small defects such as the leather chipping and seat covers coming off in the first 6 months of ownership. Still nothing wrong. This is no longer a matter of wanting a new car, it's a matter of my safety, which is compromised everytime I turn on the ignition of this car. This has to be fixed before my life is taken.
Vehicle cuts off on an intermittent basis while traveling any speed on highway. Vehicle accelerates and headlights, and warning light illuminate before vehicle shuts down. Dealer has been contacted.
On five occasions while driving vehicle started to accelerate intermittently. Vehicle been to dealer on two occasions, and they could not duplicate the problem. Feel free to provide any further information.

Problems with odometer, gas gauge, turn signals, windows, radio, hazard lights, air bag lights, speedometer. . The mileage and clock were no longer visible. A new battery and alternator were installed prior to the incident. The sun roof leaked constantly and was also fixed prior to the incident. The battery and wrench light were constantly illuminated. This vehicle had been repaired over and over again. Consumer had to exit and barely made it home when she entered the driveway, the vehicle completely died. . The air condition was not cold enough, the cigarette lighter was broke, the brakes made a grinding noise, the door locks/latches were inoperative, and the vehicle had a transmission leak.
Intrmittently vehicle suddenly surged forward. Dealer notified, and was unable to locate cause. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
Loud hum and rpm fluctuation at all speeds. Vehicle will accelerate on its own. Dealer says replacement parts are backordered and have been for 3 months.
When the clutch is depressed while driving , the engine will maintain rpm and/or increase rpm by as much as 1500 rpm for several seconds or until the clutch is released in gear. This problem occurs while driving (shifting gear) or coming to a stop when the engine is hot. If I hit the throttle to try and bring the rpm down it will hang at the higher rpm.
Car leased in 1999. Since then there have been several complaints, the radio shorting out, 2 same side/tire blow outs, trouble lights and transmission problems, brake noise and acceleration problems. In each and every case the response has been "we cannot reproduce the problem" hence, no fixes. Warrenty expired now the alternater needs to be replaced? comment from service department "it must have been defective". ???.
Accelerator stays at 3500 rpm without consumer's foot on the pedal.
Rpms remain high when clutch is engaged; rpms take far too long to reach a normal idle speed.
While driving at approximately 40mph vehicle stalled without any prior warning. Towed vehicle to dealership & was informed it was the iac solenoid which needed to be replaced.
Throttle will not close when shifting gears below 3500 rpm's. Car will actually accelerate when letting off the throttle under 3500 rpm's. When down shifting car will accelerate also if shifting under 3500 rpm's. Very dangerous in traffic as driver must constantly ride the brake to slow auto. Car is a stick shift and Mercury has stated that the problem is a minimal reported problem but they are aware of it.
Transmission surges and hesitates upon accelleration causing unexpected increases in speed; rear hatch will not open; brakes still grind after replacement; after door latches replaced, car now makes whining noice; starter replacement makes high pitched noise; coolant light comes on--dealer's solution is to overfill coolant level.
While driving on the highway vehicle will race to very high rpms, and then completely shutdown without warning. Please give any further details.
Car died at 50mph. Turned car off and back on while still rolling on the way home last night. Also on the way home last night the car accelerated, on it's own, my foot was not on the accelerator, increased from 15mph to ~20mph and rpms went up. This is the second time it has happened in the last few months. I believe it is related to the "rpm" issue that the Ford technical rep said was "normal". There is no way rpms increasing 300-1500rpm when pushing in the clutch is normal. I am concerned this is the second time the rpms/speed has increased on it's own. This is also the second time the car has died running down the road.
Rpms on engine do not drop when clutch pressed. Rpms go up sometime 1500 rpms. Car lurches when downshifting into 2nd unless waiting 5-20 seconds for rpms to finally drop. Happens every day if vehicle is warm (driven over 25 miles). Ford says it is designed this way. Problem didn't show up for at least 12,000 miles. Problem disappeared after 800 mile drive, but reoccurred after 1 week. Car has accelerated in 2nd gear without my intervention once. That is enough to cause me great concern for my safety. I cannot drive this car with normal driving habits, I could orginally, not now. The problem is getting progressively worse. The dealer says I have no recorse and it is not a problem according to Ford. It is a problem. I feel unsafe, and it could endanger other people.
Rpm's remain high or increase when clutch is engaged-very unsafe! you never know if you are going to slow down or if the car will continue to go even though you are not touch the gas, clutch or brake.
While driving up an incline the vehicle cannot accelerate past 50 mph even with foot pressing the gas pedal to the floor. Nlm.
The consumer could hear a whinning noise when releasing his foot from the gas pedal. Nlm.
While driving vehicle starts speeding by itself. Dealer was notified.
