Three problems related to brake pedal and linkage have been reported for the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The most recently reported issues are listed below. : on three occasions when the gear was placed into drive the vehicle would lurch forward or when the brakes were applied the same thing would occur causing the tires to screech. The vehicle was taken to dealers who determined that the gas and brake pedals were to close to each other. When depressing one pedal the other pedal was also applied. The dealers also determined that because the pedals were in close proximity it would cause the vehicle to unintentionally accelerate. Brake pedal and gas pedal are too closely located. When stepping on brake pedal consumer can hit the gas pedal at the same time.
While waiting for red the light to change, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The driver could not maintain control, the vehicle jumped the curb and crashed into a ditch. There was no diagnostic test performed on the vehicle. The air bag did not deploy, the electronic fuel shut off and did not engage and the seat belts did not tighten. The consumer was told that the adjustable pedals caused the accident and have caused a lot of accidents. Ford claimed that fault is the driver's fault due to their foot being on both pedals at the same time.
