While driving the vehicle the headlights would go out and stop working. The only way I could drive at night was to pull the switch towards me and keep the brights on while driving. If I let go the lights wouldn't stay on and I couldn't see the road. I tried to use the switch on the dash to turn on the headlights but it would only work for the panel lights on the dash board. This happened while I was driving at night with my family in the car it was very scary and we were driving on toads with no street lights lights. This occurred on wed, Feb. 20 2019. Once this happened I pulled over put the car in park turned the car off and restarted it. I put the car in drive and tried to turn on the headlights but nothing would come on so I pulled the switch towards me and keep it like that so the bright lights would come on and I could see the road to drive this for 30 min until we got home.
On 25 April 2016 driving on a two lane country road at night both headlights suddenly turned off. I was able to pull into a farm access space and avoided the ditch. Although the parking lights seemed to work I was not able to turn on the headlights for several minutes. Finally after many trys with the light switch the headlights did come back on. I was able to reach home without further incident but now fear driving car at night!.
Headlights will not stay on need to hold back the headlight switch.
Received notice from Ford-12/15/2015-headlight switch deficient-could cause dangerous driving if fails-Ford recall - replace -switch - have heard nothing since-same per my dealer.
My brother was visiting for my son's wedding and used our mother's car for transportation. He found that the headlights would not come on, and eventually found that holding the high beam switch "on", the lights worked. At the dealership he was told there was likely a recall to fix this. Since he has gone back home, I have been researching this for my mother. I found a closed "safety" issue, number pe08066, which is exactly what he experienced. Although you have a very low number of complaints listed, consider this: most of these cars are purchased by older people, many mechanically incapable in addition to being unsavvy with computers and the internet, and tend to drive it less, especially at night, so the issue would not be noticeable for quite some time. If they did experience this, they probably paid some serious money to Ford dealers to get it fixed, not realizing that this is a huge safety issue and this should be fixed for free under warranty before failure of the module - the TSB talks about failure of the module. Well, my brother took it in for inspection with this faulty module, and it passed, so then do they not consider it "failed"? mother is 91 years old and would probably panic if the lights went out while she was driving it. This is a major safety issue, and should be rated higher to get the warranty work done!!! I plan to follow up with the same dealer and see what they have to say about this. My suspicion is that until it fails she will have to pay for this fix, which is not cheap. This is ridiculous. Listing my information instead of hers as she needs our help to deal with this kind of annoyance.
My husband and I have had to make other arrangements for us getting back and forth to work after the headlights stopped working on this car. We went to the dealership who stated the part was on back order. We were just able to get the part placed on 1/21/2015 and it worked for the first hour. We took it back on 1/22/2015 and was told that the lighting controls (the switch that turns the light on auto, off etc) is not their problem. It seems they allow these problems to occur long enough to allow it to effect other things on the car then state there was only one problem approved without the out of pocket. However we had no problems until the headlights stopped working. The next thing that went were the dash board lights and now the brake lights. How do we know that depending upon the timeframe problem exists, it may have an adverse affect on other things? this has been a huge inconvenience and it seems they want a fatality before something is done about it.
The headlights turned off while on the freeway. Since then it's happening more frequently. Now it's multiple times each morning on the 35 minute trip to work. Temporary solution is to manually hold the momentary brights switch. Holding this switch while driving is annoying, and unsafe since that it on the same lever as the turn signals.
The headlights on my 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis have stopped working. This has been an intermittent problem. The most recent issue left my wife and mother in law stranded along the roadside. The first time I thought it was the switch in the steering column because after working the blinkers the lights started working. The next time my wife was driving on the interstate highway and the lights just went off at interstate speeds. It seems this is a common issue and has stranded others.
The headlights would turn on intermittently and then began to fail completely. With the dash switch in the proper place, the headlights would not come on. The high beams would continue to work, but the low beams would not. A Ford dealership declared that it was a bad lighting control module.
Driving down the road and the headlights went out. All other lights work fine, but the headlights work intermittently. I have to use the bright lights and hold the switch while driving in order to be able to drive at night and that is just crazy. I'm blinding everyone I pass and it's very hard to drive that way.
Headlights would not come on in the manual or automatic light switch mode. The only way to have headlights on is to hold high beam lever in the "flash more"( lever pulled toward driver). I found after a while if I kick my foot above the accelerator, the lights would come on and stay on for an undetermined time. Further diagnosis indicates a poor connection by moving one of the modules connectors.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that the exterior front headlights would fail sporadically and without warning. The contact would have to keep the high beam headlights activated at all times in order to see properly at night. A local mechanic repaired the failure numerous times, but the failure would recur. The dealer was in the process of replacing the manual light switch and the fuses. The vehicle was in the process of repair. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileage was approximately 109,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that the headlights would intermittently stop illuminating, moments after being turned on. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the auto lamp switch failed. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 141,289.
I own a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The problem started with my headlights flicking on and off while driving at night and quickly progressed to turning off and not coming back on at all. I replaced the dashboard headlight control and they worked for about a week and then they started turning off again while driving but if I flicked my high beams they would come back on for about 15 min or so and go back off. After a couple of days of that they just quit working at all. Once again I replaced the dashboard switch to no avail.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. While driving approximately 55 mph all of the exterior lights were not functioning. The contact drove onto the side of the road, shut the engine off and restarted the vehicle in order for the lights to function. The failure occurred intermittently. The contact stated that he purchased a headlight control switch from the manufacturer and replaced the part himself. The failure continued to occur. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage 115,000.
While driving on a back road on my way home from work, headlights went out and could not be turned back on. Headlights were in the auto mode when they went out, I switched to manual while braking so not to hit anything hard and they did not come back on. I pulled over and parked. I tried them again in about five minutes and they worked for about 10 minutes and then did the same thing. I have not had the car looked at yet, but on the internet found several similar stories and believe it is the light control module. I am shocked there has not been a recall based on all the complaints online about the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis, I'm glad I wasn't asleep at the wheel when this happened to me! please do something about this, it is a serious problem!!!.
While driving at dusk on my way home (with my 5 year old little girl!), my headlights shut off without warning! we were fortunate that several drivers in the oncoming lane were concerned and conscientious and flashed their high beams to signal that something was wrong. Deductively, I ruled out my lights being off because the switch was on. That was until the traffic light turned red and I saw no reflection on the back of the car in front of me! I flipped the switch off then back on again to see if it was a bad connection in the switch or perhaps it was between positions and would possibly work if I repositioned it. No good! ugh, the light went green! I nervously pulled at the bright light selector to see if they worked! just in time to barely miss the SUV that obviously did not see us!!! I did not let it go untill we were safe at home!!! phew!!! I guess now would be the time to change my pants!.
I am having a problem with my headlights turning off while driving or not turning on after I have the car off for a few minutes. All the other exterior lights work at this time. I thought it was only happened when I had it in automatic lights but now it happens when I turn the lights on manually too. Sometimes if you move the blinker switch around they will come back on but other times they won't. I have had to drive holding the the blinker arm back to have the brights on so I can make it home. It started in June and happened very intermittently but now 5 months later it is happening every time I drive at night.
While driving my 2003 Mercury marquis one evening, my headlights went out. I tried turning the switch on the dashboard to the headlight position because originally it was on the sensor position, but they didn't come back on. No matter what I did, they remained off. From that night on, my headlights work sporadically. Sometimes they'll come on right away and then go out while driving. Sometimes they'll come on in the daylight with the switch in the off position. It's very scary when you're driving down a back country road where there's no street lights and your headlights go out. The only way I could get light was to hold back on the high beam lever. That was weird too because the high beams wouldn't work when I put the lever in the on position, only when I pulled back on the lever which puts the high beams on for as long as you hold the lever. One night I drove for about 5 miles and the headlights stayed on the whole time. There's just no knowing when they're going to work, and if they do, how long they'll stay on. I understand it's going to be very expensive to fix the problem, but I don't have $800 so haven't had it repaired yet. I just don't drive after dark, which is very inconvenient!.
I am having headlight failure due to light control module(lcm/light box) issues. As I have found out while researching the web I am not the only person having this problem the headlights will switch off and on no matter if your driving or not. Many times they will not come on at all. I am forced to stop once they go out and wait until they decide to switch back on to continue while driving at night. The part and repair will be 900. 00 by a local dealer due to the fact that there has never been a recall issued. What exactly needs to happen to get this safety issue remedied? please take a deep look into this. I have been driving on a long dark hwy when this has happen do it take for someone to be killed !!!! because when the light go out you can not see.
Headlights went out without warning. Kept using the bright light switch until they came back on. . This has happened a few times. Now the headlight will not come at all with the light switch. This is on a 2003 Grand Marquis. With all the complaints Ford should have a recall for the safety issue.
I am having headlight failure due to light control module(lcm/light box) issues. This issue has been previously complained about and investigated by your agency as I have found out while researching your website. There has been no events leading up to the failure. The headlights will switch off and on no matter if your driving or not. Many times they will not go on at all. I am forced to stop once they go out and wait until they decide to switch back on to continue while driving at night. I reported this to Ford motor company on August 10, 2009, and I was quoted a 1,000 estimate for repair by my local dealer due to the fact that there has never been a recall issued. What exactly needs to happen to get this safety issue remedied? please take a deep look into this.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. While driving at an unknown speed, the headlights suddenly dimmed. The contact examined the light switch and noticed that it had to be held in place manually in order for the headlights to remain illuminated. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 79,000.
I have a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The automatic headlamps operate erratically. At night, I will be driving and the headlamps will switch off for no apparent reason. Often times, if I am able, I pull over on the side of the road and either have to just wait or fiddle with the headlight switch until they come back on. Many times they will switch off 3 or 4 times. This creates a dangerous situation for me. I am 87 years old and my daughter who also drives the car is 66 years old. This is a serious problem. Unfortunately, in order to repair this, it has been estimated at anywhere from $400 to $800 to repair this malfunction. I hope the NHTSA will see fit to order a recall by Ford to repair this defect.
