5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

On 1/1/2016 I was driving on 495 w in queens, NY heading back to manhattan where I live. Out of nowhere the car began jerking, a wrench light on the dash panel came on (which I never saw before) and I could tell the car was decelerating. I tried hitting the accelerator again, the car would jerk, the engine was revving but was barely moving. I knew I had to pull over and luckily I was able to navigate to the shoulder of the road. This was an extremely dangerous situation. I am a confident driver, however, a less confident or timid driver most likely would have panicked and gotten into a potentially serious collision.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the throttle body failed and there was a sudden loss of acceleration. The contact applied force to the accelerator pedal and it did not respond. The contact was not included in NHTSA action number: pe13003 (engine). The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2015

Power of vehicle drastically decreased while driving down secondary road. Had just enough power to pull over to side of the road. Pushed down accelerator in park and neutral but no power. Turned off. Restarted and resumed normal driving. Suspect electronic throttle body. The Ford dealership will not replace without a diagnostic fee because they state it is not a recall, although an internal vehicle health report states "there are recalls for your 2009 Mercury Mariner at this time" notice # 13n03 electronic throttle body extended coverage I believe using the word recall constitutes misrepresentation when in fact Ford motor company states it is just a customer satisfaction program to alleviate them from costs and any wrong doing. It is a very dangerous safety concern.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

I was driving at 45mph when all of a sudden, the car stop running. I had to pull over and cut the car off. I started the car again and it went about one mile before it cut off again. Then a wrench symbol came on the left side dash board. I drove the car home and it cut off on me three times before I could get it home. I look in my car book to see what the wrench symbol means and it says that it is the throttle control/powertrain.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

While I was driving on hwy doing 75mph my Mercury Mariner 2009 it suddenly loss power and (while engine was running) I could not accelerate. "tool" light came on. I could not do anything to regain speed (accelerator was disable) and the only fix was to shut down the engine and re-start. Vehicle will start and work normally I took to the mechanics the next day he said that no codes came up.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

While driving, the vehicle started losing power and the wrench light came on; stopped and had a hard time cranking but was able to go on. 2nd time pulling onto a busy street, same incident, able to get to center lan and recrank this time surging forward but gained control and went on, very unnerving situation, scared to drive long distances.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

2009 Mercury Mariner. I had just pulled into the store parking lot the car was in park but running. When all of a sudden it cut off lights on dash board came on. . . I was able to restart the car on the way home every stop light I stopped at the car would cut off. . . Took to auto repair shop they diagnosted it but nothing came up on machine. Car ran fine for the rest of the day. On the way to work that Monday the car stop in the middle of the road I was able to coast over the wrench icon lite came on. Cut the car off started it back up and drove to work. . . . Now the car is doing it every 5-10 miles stopping wont let me accelerate and the wrench icon is coming on. . . . This is very dangerous. . . . . . This needs to be recalled. If everyone is having the same problem. . . . . .

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2013

While driving 65 mph in metro DC rush hour traffic, the vehicle suddenly lost power (engine still running but no acceleration). I had to cross over 4 lanes of traffic to reach the shoulder (very dangerous). I turned the vehicle off and restarted (sounded like it was "flooded"). I took the vehicle to the dealer for evaluation today, but came across many common complaints online regarding this exact issue and also learned that NHTSA was conducting an investigation. I just wanted to add my case to this issue. This could be a very serious and dangerous problem as it happens at high speeds and the vehicle slows rapidly.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

This actually first occurred on Friday. I was traveling on the thruway at about 65mph when the car felt almost like it downshifted and then I totally lost acceleration and the wrench light appeared on the dash. I limped to the side of the road and the car jerked and sputtered before I shut it off. After a few minutes I restarted the vehicle and it sounded like it was flooded at first then it turned over normally. I was an hour from home and made it back without further incident. I took it to the dealer the next morning and it did not show any codes. They suggested I replace the purge valve, and as I had a busy week of work related travel scheduled I went ahead and had them do it for $120. Better safe than sorry. Right? today I get an hour from home and it happens again. I call my dealer and they suggest I find the closest Ford dealer and take it there immediately. Closest Ford dealer couldn't take me for 2 weeks!! I was an hour from my destination, so I decided to chance it. I drove about 20 minutes and it happened again. Same exact scenario. I started it again, got back on the road and drove 10 minutes and again, except this time the engine light also came on. I called roadside assistance and was towed to a garage. I am 2 1/2 hours from home and driving a rental. Garage will diagnose and hopefully fix tomorrow. Service tech said if he had to diagnose without a code he would say throttle body! it also sounds like this is not covered by my 5 year/60k warranty either. With all of the similar stories I have read online Ford needs to be forced to do a recall and reimburse us all for our expenses.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2013

2009 Mercury Mariner with about 90,000 miles. Was on the freeway driving about 65-70 mph when suddenly the power to car cut off - was not able to accelerate vehicle; drove to right side of the road. Car was still on, but gas pedal would not work, wrench light was on, car idling very roughly. Turned car off. Turned car back on, wrench light was off, drove another 30 minutes to destination without incident. In the two hour drive home, the car cut off five more times. I heard a bell alert audio sound a few times, but the only light that came on was the wrench just as the power cut off. The very last time it happened, the engine light came on, and stayed on even after restarting the car. I feel very thankful to have got home alive and without getting into an accident. Dealer recommends a 90m service package ($547), a diagnostic test ($104), and possibly a throttle body and/or sensor ($300-ish).

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2013

This is the fourth time since purchasing the car at carmax in October 2012 that the car has "shut off" without warning at low speed when close to parking or driving slow--without rhyme nor reason--I had it diagnosed at carmax to no avail, then cherokee Ford to no avail (where I purchased a new battery), then at christian brothers auto where they replaced the spark plugs and coil. ( I have an extended warranty so my cost was 200dollars) the problem continues. I have done research and see the throttle body is most likely the culprit and a safety alert is on the web from consumer report and Ford forum and north carolina safety board---I am having the trottle body replaced at my expense--my daughter drives this vehicle and I want it safe! apparently this involves this model 2009-2012.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2013

Engine died while driving with engine and wrench light coming on. Took to dealer and found dtc code p2111 when troubleshooting. Dealer found internal fault with throttle body. Replaced throttle body and have not had problem since.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2013

I was leaving work and driving down a road at about 50mph when all of a sudden my car jumped and I then was coming up to a red light so I was braking and behind a car. At the red light I was a few inches from hitting the car because my car kept jumping forward. I then got scared and turned my car off and back on and it was driving fine. Then all of a sudden it did the same thing and I couldn't accelerate I would press on the gas and my car was just shaking and losing speed and wouldn't move. Thankfully I didn't drive the highway home that day.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2012

After coming to a stop at a light or stop sign, as I accelerate my car jumps/jerks as if it's straining to switch to next gear. Generally happens when accelerating between 10-40 miles. When it initially started it would happen 1-2 times a week. Now it happens every day. I have an appointment schedule to have dealer look at vehicle.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2012

Driving along at 40 mph and the vehicle started slowing down. Giving it more gas had no impact. I noticed a wrench light illumiinated on dash. After sitting for a few minutes the vehicle was restarted and ran fine . This happened again a few weeks later so we brought it to our repair shop. After some research it appeared that others had the same issue and that replacing the throttle body may be the issue. The part was replaced and we didn't have the issue for months until it happened again. It's been a total of 5 times it has happened. Really worried that this will happen on the highway where there is higher risk of an accident. Not sure what to do next. Sure seems like many others have this issue. Does Ford have a solution for this?? if they do they should issue a recall before someone is hurt badly.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2012

While entering interstate highway, engine balked like bad gas. After two or three tankfuls and the vehicle dying in traffic, I left it with my dealer to find the problem. After a week, the vehicle had not died for them so I brought it home, only to continue with the same dying and hesitating when accelerated. A month or so later the dealer kept it again for about 5 days and it still did okay for them. They have no idea what the "problem" is. We have parked the car in our garage because several times we have narrowly escaped being rear-ended, when turning corners, crossing railroad tracks, etc. I contacted Ford motor CO. In michigan and they do not "have this problem with other vehicles" and don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Mechanics in two other garages have driven the vehicle and have not located the problem. Help!!.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2012

Was driving down country road and all of a sudden felt then engine what I thought was kick out of gear. Had no acceleration at all. Pulled off road and the vehicle was running in a rough idle, but still could not give it gas. Once placed in park the idle leveled out and still no acceleration. The wrench symbol was on. I stopped the engine and waited 10 minutes then restarted engine and everything was ok. For about 3 months. I took into the Ford dealer only to be told there was no code and they could do nothing without it. Problem has gotten steadily worst. And now it is at point where wife can not drive her car! I am driving it and finally yesterday the engine light came on. I ran it to autozone where they confirmed the dreaded p2112 code. I took it to the Ford dealer today figuring alright less than 5 years old and 42,000 miles I would finally get it fixed. No go! although for $106 they did confirm what autozone already told me that the throttle-body was shot and would cost another $430 to fix. I promptly called Ford customer care line and was told that they would contact the service manager at my Ford dealership to work out a payment plan for me to get it fixed still at my cost. This is crazy that I payed over 26,000 for a vehicle that I still owe 11,000 on and under 5 years old with 42,000 miles and this is my 3rd major problem with it. . Have already had the engine pulled apart once to be fixed and one of the drive shafts had to be fully replaced. This is unfortunate but will be the last Ford I ever own!!!.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

The vehicle suddenly looses power and accelerator is unresponsive. This first occurred with approximately 33,000 miles while still in warranty and dealer replaced throttle body. Vehicle was fine until November of 2013 with about 80,000 miles. This is very dangerous because vehicle goes down to idle speed and with no power, it's very hard sometimes to get to the shoulder of the road with only coast control of vehicle. This should be a recall issue as I'm aware of the many others having same problem. I'm making this complaint to try and have this issue resolved before something tragic happens and also to document this safety issue.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2011

Coming to red light one car in front of me. I pushed down on brake petal and it was hard to push down. Engine revved up to over 5 rpm's and car wouldn't stop finally I put car in neutral and engine went back to idle position. Almost rear ended car in front of me. Took Mariner to dealer who wasn't very helpful because he never heard of this before & wanted to know if I wanted to leave Mariner there. Also ask if I had my foot on the gas petal instead of the brake. Dealer was unable to verify concern so they replaced canister purge valve. Have also had transmission problems with this Mariner that I believe still exist. Filled out surveys and was told manager would call but no one ever contacted me. Very unprofessional dealer.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

Update to 01/30/13 complaint. I purchased car on 10/22/12 with 58,398 miles from a dealer. I started having issues late December 2012. I was having problem with car jerking into gear or being sluggish when accelerating. I took car to dealer on 01/29/13. Researched carfax information and found out that on 01/05/10 - transmission flushed and stated as replaced. 18,588 miles. 08/09/10 - transmission was removed to replace cooler. 28,372 miles. On 01/29/13 mechanic advised that transmission was leaking badly and that "press regulator valve sticking". 01/30/13 - transmission valve body replaced. 63,356 miles. 6 weeks after valve body replaced car started jerking again. Took car to dealer on 03/18/13. . . Dealer suggested replacement of transmission, but extended warranty company said no. . . Would only pay for transmission rebuild. 65,951 miles. This entailed day and half of dealer/warranty company haggling over repairs. Mechanic began work on 03/21/13 and found lots of melted plastic that he had to remove. Transmission work completed on 03/23/13 but repair revealed starter problem. Dealer currently waiting on approval from warranty company to repair starter. Mechanic advised if starter not repaired will cause fly wheel problem. Mechanic is annoyed that transmission is having problems so soon after 2010 "repairs" and that warranty company refused to replace transmission.
