1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2023

The pcm shorts out and fails when sparkplug and coil packs replaced this cause the steering system to fail speedometer to quit and no transmission connection.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

Tool light comes on and car loses power in traffic, very, very dangerous. Dealership updated with computer but vehicle is still doing it. Please do a recall Ford.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

I am getting continual throttle body errors on my 2009 Mariner. It goes into low power mode so I can "limp home". It happens mostly on highways when I need to "punch it" and get alot of acceleration.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2016

My 2009 Mercury Mariner stalls while its idle, at a intersection or just waiting. It stalls then I started up right after it stalls.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

I was driving at 45mph when all of a sudden, the car stop running. I had to pull over and cut the car off. I started the car again and it went about one mile before it cut off again. Then a wrench symbol came on the left side dash board. I drove the car home and it cut off on me three times before I could get it home. I look in my car book to see what the wrench symbol means and it says that it is the throttle control/powertrain.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

While I was driving on hwy doing 75mph my Mercury Mariner 2009 it suddenly loss power and (while engine was running) I could not accelerate. "tool" light came on. I could not do anything to regain speed (accelerator was disable) and the only fix was to shut down the engine and re-start. Vehicle will start and work normally I took to the mechanics the next day he said that no codes came up.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

Car engine stopped while driving at a low (10-20 mph) speed. Second time this happened. First time on 2011 replaced throttle body then. It happened again 12/31/2013. Ford service said throttle body needs to be replaced again.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2013

While driving the Mariner at 45 mph on a busy street, the engine went into limp mode, lost all acceleration and slowed to 5 mph. I was nearly rear-ended by the truck behind me and was forced to pull up onto a sidewalk, damaging my tire. Pulled the codes on the car and got a p111 code. Did some searching on the internet and found that this is a common issue and an extreme safety hazard. I was very happy that I was the driver, and not my 16 year old daughter!!! this is the second safety issue we have had with this car in the last month -- earlier the power steering went out, again without any warning in traffic.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2013

When pulling up to a stop sign the car just stopped next time coming off interstate to stop the vehicle kinda of lunged the next tine it just tried to stall had to put in neutral and keep foot on gas to keep it running.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2013

I was driving on the highway and suddenly the vehicle lost all speed control. I could not accelerate and the car began slowing down. I had to quickly change lanes and pull over to the shoulder. I put the car in park and turned off the engine, waited a few minutes, and then was able to start the car again. This same thing happened two days later. I have read other complaints about this same issue happening with Mariners between 2009-2011. This needs to be recalled and fixed. It is incredibly dangerous to lose all acceleration control going 65 mph!!.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2013

During normal highway driving conditions, car suddenly stopped accelerating, could push the accelerator all the way to the floor and get no power. Engine did not stall out, but would not provide power. Was able to pull over and turn off car, then turn back on, and problem was gone. After another 15 miles or so it happened again. Took the car to the dealership and they reported that it was a bad throttle body and had to be replaced.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

Car lost power and stopped while driving. Engine light came on then went off.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2013

While driving on the taconic state parkway, traveling at approx. 55 mph, the engine failed to respond to the throttle and while the car was still in gear, the vehicle merely began coasting. I safely steered the car to the shoulder of the road, and turned the vehicle off. After approximately 2 minutes, I was able to re-start the car (with some hesitation). I then turned around to attempt to drive home. The same situation occurred one more time while traveling home (approx. 30 miles). I brought the car to metric motors of lake carmel, NY. Their computer diagnostics identified the problem as the throttle actuator control. They said that they unstuck the part (cost to diagnose & make repairs $422+) and I again began driving the car. Unfortunately, after visiting nyc on Saturday, October 19, 2013, the same problem occurred, again while driving home on the taconic state parkway. I was able to start the car; however, the problem re-occurred approximately 10 more times over the 40 mile return trip to my home. Each time the engine failed to respond to the throttle and while stile in gear, merely began coasting. Each time, I safely steered the car to the shoulder, and eventually re-started the car and managed to make it home.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

Driving along and unexpectedly engine goes in limp mode with no warning and no acceleration- extremely dangerous as was driving on expressway when this occurred.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2013

While I was driving the car jerked as if I hit my brakes and it wouldnt let me accelerate anymore so I pulled over on the side of the road and the car was vibrating real rough so I turned the car off and sat there for a minute and tried starting it and it took a couple tries and I got down the road and pulled into where I was going and it did it again as I was pulling into a parking spot. I really hope this problem can get resolved soon with no cost iv done everything I can to my car to keep it in good condition as in getting the oil changed in it every three thousand miles and even putting the best gasoline in it at $3. 65 cents a gallon so its time for Ford/Mercury to support there side of the situation.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2013

Driving up ramp to get on 95 car started slowing down after I gave it gas to get up ramp. I noticed a wrench light illumiinated on dash so I pulled of manual after turning off carto see what it meant (throttle) I sat for 5 fives started the car and it drove fine, but since then it has happen 3 more times.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle lost acceleration power then stalled. The vehicle was moved to the shoulder and restarted then the check engine light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer, where they ran a diagnostic test and stated that the accelerator was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer but no defect was found. The failure mileage was 87,000. . . . Updated 07-10-13.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2013

This is the fourth time since purchasing the car at carmax in October 2012 that the car has "shut off" without warning at low speed when close to parking or driving slow--without rhyme nor reason--I had it diagnosed at carmax to no avail, then cherokee Ford to no avail (where I purchased a new battery), then at christian brothers auto where they replaced the spark plugs and coil. ( I have an extended warranty so my cost was 200dollars) the problem continues. I have done research and see the throttle body is most likely the culprit and a safety alert is on the web from consumer report and Ford forum and north carolina safety board---I am having the trottle body replaced at my expense--my daughter drives this vehicle and I want it safe! apparently this involves this model 2009-2012.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2013

While driving my car suddenly began decreasing in speed, it appeared my gas pedal had been disconnected. The car was still on so I turned it off and back on and it worked fine. For a month before hand my car would make a loud bang and jolt when ever I switched between drive, reverse, park etc. When presenting the problem to Ford they were very rude but explained I had heard about this issue online. They finally looked at the car for me and were given an error code (of p101 I believe).

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2012

When being aggressive with the accelerator the engine stalls and the accelerator stops working forcing the driver to pull off of the road. When bring the car to a stop it jerks forward until it is put into park, still the accelerator does not work no matter how pushed. After turning it off start up takes longer than usual and either the little wrench or the engine symbol appears. After taking it to a mechanic it is diagnosed that is has a bad electronic throttle and it will have to be replace. Prior to this there has not had an accident, instance or work done that would cause this.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes and was able to stop the independent acceleration. The failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact was entering a parking space when the vehicle exhibited an abnormally loud revving sound and accelerated into a fence without warning. There were no injuries nor was a police report filed. The contact was able to secure an appointment to have a diagnostic performed on the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 26,006 and the current mileage was 26,011.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

The vehicle suddenly looses power and accelerator is unresponsive. This first occurred with approximately 33,000 miles while still in warranty and dealer replaced throttle body. Vehicle was fine until November of 2013 with about 80,000 miles. This is very dangerous because vehicle goes down to idle speed and with no power, it's very hard sometimes to get to the shoulder of the road with only coast control of vehicle. This should be a recall issue as I'm aware of the many others having same problem. I'm making this complaint to try and have this issue resolved before something tragic happens and also to document this safety issue.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2009

2009 Mercury Mariner. The rear end of the vehicle makes a squealing noise upon acceleration I took the car back to the Ford dealership in hillsdale. The vehicle was in the shop 12/9/2009 through 12/16/2009. Unable to fix the noise, Ford motor company had them tear down the transmission and replace the drive chain. When I picked up the car I was told that the noise was still there and that Ford engineering said it should not be a problem. The noise was still consistent and has grown increasingly louder. Since this initial complaint I have received a recall notice for the transmission solenoid regulator valve. The vehicle has been accelerating when it shouldn't and not accelerating when it should, like when merging into traffic when the transmission would not perform properly.
