Mercury Mariner Hybrid owners have reported 4 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mercury Mariner Hybrid based on all problems reported for the Mariner Hybrid.
2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid with 93000 miles driving 50 mph on a six-lane blvd. Hesitates briefly, then accelerator ceases to function completely. Despite the extremely dangerous situation, we managed to maneuver the car off the road to safety. Warning light (triangle with exclamation point) and warning message "stop safely now". The car computer knows there is a problem, why doesn't Ford? they conducted a "customer satisfaction program" for millions of escape and mariner owners for this very issue - throttle body defect - but not hybrids. Why not? it cost us $300 and nearly a multi-car accident. Ford needs to be held accountable for manufacturers defects in all cars, not just some. Putting families in harm's way because Ford doesn't have the integrity to take responsibility for their vehicle issues is completely unacceptable. This should be investigated, and Ford needs to be held liable.

On I-66w vehicle lost engine power at highway speed. Displayed stop safely now and master vehicle electrical hazard warning lamp. The incident was extremely harrowing for the driver as the power cutoff was unexpected and immediate. Coasted to shoulder. A restart, per the owner manual, was attempted but did not work. Transported on flatbed to Ford dealership. Dealership stated hybrid battery harness, hybrid cooling fans, and throttle body needed to be replaced and pcm reprogrammed for $1900 to €œfix issue. Owner requested a new 12v front battery and warning ceased. Owner decided to do some research and test drive short distances. On 5/24 the engine cut off in an office parking lot. Vehicle was able to be restarted and go 4 miles back to residence after the carpet covering the hybrid battery was pulled up and the cabin a/c turned to high in an effort to cool the battery area (it did not feel hot but the owner believed if a temp reading was the cause a few degrees cooler might help). A wealth of info was found indicating this was a known problem and had multiple Ford technical service bulletins issued (09-18-6 Sep 09 hybrid systems - red triangle on/dtc p0a27 set€). The owner compiled a list of 88 complaint numbers on the NHTSA site that indicate substantially similar experiences from 2005-2008 Ford escape hybrid / Mercury Mariner Hybrid owners. Believe root cause is a design flaw in the pcm s/w that removes engine power when a minor deviation from the nominal battery temp range is sensed. Likely contributing issue is a poorly designed hybrid battery cooling system (battery harness, battery cooling fans, mec pump, blend door, relays). The NHTSA is urged to open an investigation into the stop safely now/master vehicle electrical hazard engine shutdowns. Vehicle is not repaired and can be made available for inspection.

On-freeway gas engine/electric motor shut-down. Driving in morning rush-hour traffic approximately 15 minutes after cold start in 60-degree weather, both the gasoline engine and the electric motor propulsion systems shut-down together without prior warning while the vehicle was in motion - "stop safely now" was the `too-little-too-late' info on the instrument panel. Neither power mode would restart with trans in neutral (I refused to try cycling ignition key to off, and risk steering lock). Fortunate to coast onto shoulder, where I had to move gear selector to park, turn ignition key full-off and then back to start, at which time normal operation resumed. Total loss of both power sources while in-use on a freeway and unable to re-activate without shifting transmission into park is absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable!.

Stalling, total loss of power on freeway, or making a city turn, or accelerating from a stop sign or light, or going up even a slight incline, such as a driveway to a house. Only in the summer. Do not dare use air conditioning, which makes it occur quicker and much more often. 95 degrees outside, 113 degrees in car - cannot and do not use air conditioner, but still happens on trip over 15 minutes long. Totally unsafe. Like other contributors, I would like to know why there has been no recall. Just today, July 10, 2013, 18-wheeler behind me (close) on 45 mph city street, and I stalled. I stuck my left hand out of my window in a "please stop" gesture, and driver did stop, but I was terrified. Must come to full stop, put car in park to re-start it. But same thing will happen at next light or sign or change of speed, whether in 5 minutes or 30 seconds, city street or freeway. At this point, I would say this has happened approximately 250 times. Yes, that is not a typo. No question Ford knows about this.
