1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2019

Tl the contact's husband owns a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was released, the vehicle unintentionally accelerated. As a result, the contact's husband rear ended another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2010

The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes but the vehicle would not stop. The contact was unable to maintain control of the vehicle as it accelerated. The left side of the vehicle began to skid abnormally and the contact crashed into a wire fence. The vehicle then rolled over and crashed into several trees before coming to a stop. The passenger sustained major injuries to the head and bodily trauma. The contact sustained injuries to the head. The contact and passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was unknown.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

My 1997 Mercury Mountaineer (that I purchased Feb 2010) is experiencing the same acceleration problems as described in the 4. 0 sohc campaign # 00v422000 and action # ea99001. I have to apply extra acceleration to make the car drive when engine is "cold". After it warms up, or if I start the engine and allow it to warm up before driving, I do not have that problem. Has there been any other v8 complaints?.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

The vehicle experienced unexpected acceleration. The only way to stop the vehicle was to shift into neutral or park. Vehicle was taken to the dealer. Dealer could not determine the cause of the problem. This has occurred five times.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2001

While driving 20-25 mph and braking vehicle accelerated. Brake pedal felt normal. During braking vehicle slowed a bit, engine revved again. Consumer unable to stop vehicle, hit another vehicle. No injuries. $ amount of damage unknown at this time.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2001

When first pressing down consumer was in a coast mode, and throttle wouldn't budge. Dealer wanted $300 for repair. Recall 00v422000/ manufacturer's recall 00s568 didn't apply to consumer because vehicle had a 5. L engine, and recall was for a 4. L engine.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2001

When approaching stop sign, at intersection, vehicle accelerated when brakes were applied, causing a collision with the car in front of mine. The brake pedal was depressed all the way to the floor, and the engine roared as if accelerating. We have had one other similar incident in which the vehicle accelerated while braking. Dealer explained that driver had foot on brake and accelerator at same time. In second incident, I am sure that I had my foot only on the brake. Dealer examined vehicle after each incident and could find nothing wrong.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

While completely stopped, the engine roared and the vehicle lunged into oncoming traffic hitting another vehicle. The dealer repaired the damages to the vehicle but was not able to determine the cause of the problem. Please provide any additional information.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

While turning into an intersection vehicle started to rev and take off. Motor on vehicle was going faster and faster. Foot was on brake, and vehicle would not stop. After 10 seconds motor was back to normal. This has occurred on three separte occasions, one time there was an accident where the consumer hit the vehicle in front of him, there were no injuries, consumer found service bulleting 97s67 and states that this exactly describes the problem the vehicle is experiencing.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem

While sitting in traffic or at a red light, vehicle has lunged or accelerated, vehicle has been taken in to be looked at but no one can seem to find the problem.

While driving vehicle & accelerating. Started to apply brakes to slow down, but vehicle increased in speed. Pumped brakes to decrease speed. Problem happened once. Taking vehicle to dealership to check.

Manufacturer's recall 98r -o3 Ford/throttle. On several occasions, since 31-August, 1999, consumer contacted dealer to have recall honored. But still unable to get repairs done. Asking NHTSA to help in this matter.

Received recall notice 97v0704000. Contacted dealer. The dealership refused to have mechanic do recall repairs on the throttle. Had indicated to owner it was not needed & would not require repair.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes vehicle will accelerate for a few seconds, and then the vehcile will slowdown and come to a stop.

I bought this Mercury in oct 98 . It is now Jan of 99 and I have had quite a few problems . A warrenty came with this car, and we have been there twice ;one for the transfer case, and switch for the power seat , leak on rear hatch window. Now im returning it for throttle malfunction. I almost killed my children and myself . I made my children jump out of the car while doing aprox . 5 miles an hour. The more I stepped on the brakes the more the engine idled faster . I dont know anything about cars I am a housewife. I just wish I knew about this defect in the car so it could been corrected before I went on vacation . It is a nice car. I wish Mercury would notify theire customers of any defects. Thank you very much for this questionair, it helped my family alot . Thank you. Dawn gag liano.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/18/1998

Backing out of drivewayconsumer moved shift lever from reverse into drive, vehcle suddenly lurched forward,causing a loss of control, resulting in an accident. Dual airbags did not deploy.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/25/1997

The truck came to a stop, the owner hit the brakes but the truck kept going, and driver slammed on the brake and hit another car, and went through a stop sign. The engine was racing the entire time with his foot was on the brake.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Owner states that while driving vehicle at 60mph and taking foot of gas the vehicle did not slow down, owner noticed that vehicle was gaining speed while approaching other vehicles. Owner had to use brakes consistently to stop vehicle.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Vehicle was in a park position with emergency brake on, got out of vehicle to check on baby was in car seat in back seat when suddenly vehicle started to accelerate which caused the vehicle to hit a brick wall with baby inside, and injuries to consumer who was trying to stop the run away vehicle. Consumer ran to vehicle, noticed that the baby sustained no injuries. Also noticed vehicle was still in park gear with emergency brake on.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

The v-6 engine type has been recalled to correct the problem I have with the 302 v-8, but you have not recalled the v-8 engine, why not????.
