2 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

We bought the car 2 years ago and a few months after we have purchased it, it started to act up. When we pull the shift gear to reversed, it jerks real bad as if we were rear ended. A few times, the shift gear would be stuck. We could not pull the shifter down to reverse from park. It normally takes us an hour so to do it but tonight, it was worst. We were stuck on park. . . Finally after an hour, we were able to pull it from park and onto reverse from the garage. Only this time reverse was park, neutral was reverse, drive was neutral and 3 was drive. It was so frustrating. . . . And to top that off, my husband and I both got into a heated argument over this stupid car!! we still cannot get it fixed because we don't have the money!!!.

4 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/18/2011

In regards to fitting two backless booster seats in the middle row of a 60-40 fold bench: on the passenger side- the seat does not slope on the sides and the buckle has a cloth strap and it is flexible and moves out of the slot to fit to his buckle. The seat is slightly wider than the drivers side. Driver's side- the seat is more contoured and the buckle is affixed to the seat and does not move or come up because of the 60-40 split. When the booster seat is placed out of the edge of the contour on the drivers side- it completely covers the buckle. Therefore, one must sit the booster unsafely at an angle where one side is higher than the other to get the buckle to fit in. I am certain in the event I slam on my brakes or get rearended, one child's seat would go flying, whereas the other seat fits safe and secure (passenger side).

10 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

Owner of a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. I purchased my vehicle in February 2010. The retractable running boards do not operate properly. Sometimes up then down one up the other down. Disconnecting motor or pulling fuses are not the answers. Steel mixed with aluminum pins is bad but can be fixed. I reviewed numerous on-line complaints and wanted to know why this item has not been recalled. The boards half way down is a constant trip hazard when getting in and out of the vehicle. 1500 dollars to replace the entire unit is the wrong answer. This is clearly a design problem on a great vehicle.

11 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

I own a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer premier SUV. Last summer I noticed that one of the bolts on liftgate is broken. I went back to the dealer where I purchased the truck and although this is a common problem with this truck it was not recalled for the 2005 year. They wanted to charge me $600 for repair. I found that to be an unacceptable response considering Ford has been aware that the bolts are inferior. I researched to find that many consumers have the same complaint. Add to it that this week the "crack" appeared beneath the glass on the liftgate near the emblem(evidently another flaw with this truck widely reported by other vehicle owners). At this point it is evident to me that the liftgate needs to be replaced by Ford at their expense. I chose this truck for safety for my five children and now feel it is unsafe to transport them with this liftgate falling apart. The repsonse from Ford customer service stated this year was not recalled for the faulty liftgate problem and the expense to replace is mine. Slowly the liftgate bolts and the liftgate are breaking rendering me unable to utilize it. How do I know the glass is safe even if I hit a bump? please advise.

12 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

The automatic locks do not work on all the doors. I've had these locks worked on, but they continue to not work. This is a safety issue, as the doors will not open at all. The driver's side rear door will not open when you try the auto-locks, and the lock cannot be manually pulled up, thus leaving the rear-seated occupant trapped in the car. This often times with the front passenger as well. It also happens with the rear hatch.

13 Unknown Or Other problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

At approximately 2:15 I parked my 1998 Mercury Mountaineer on the street in front of my house. At approximately 2:30 I heard the vehicle theft alarm go off. When I went to shut off alarm, I saw flames coming from the right front wheel well. (I could not see what was happening on the other side of vehicle) I went back into my house to fetch my dry chem fire extinguisher. I went back to the car and attempted to extinguish the fire. When I was unsuccessful, I had my son call 911 for fire department assistance. A fire truck responded within 3-5 minutes at which time the whole front end of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire department put the fire out within 5 minutes. Upon inspection, I noticed that the whole motor compartmant was consumed by the blaze and the fire had started to burn the dash and interior of the vehicle. The vehicle appears to be a total loss.

16 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/11/2005

While driving our 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, all of the sudden it will stall and a light will come on showing "engine fail safe mode". There is no power at all and the car needs a few minutes before starting up again. This has happened 3 times now and all in traffic. We have had to pray that we would not be hit or worse yet, killed. We have taken it to the dealerdhip twice now (the 1st time they said it was bad gas and sent us on our way) and all they can say the last two times is "we can't duplicate the problem". This is very unsafe and we are very afraid to drive this vehicle.

17 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/21/2004

I purchased a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer v6 in April, 2004. I immediately started to notice a harsh jerk when putting the car in reverse and sometimes while driving forward. It sometimes felt like driving a 5-speed vehicle. In late September, 04 while backing out of my driveway, me and my 13 yr old daughter experienced a very harsh jerk as if someone had slammed in the back of the car. We were both shaken. I started to experience neck problems. I made my first dr. Appt. In early to mid October 2004 and was told that my vertabre was out of place. When the recall notice came in February 2005 (I believe) to me, I took my car to be repaired and I was told that it would take at least 4 hours to fix. It actually took the dealship 3 days to fix it. The auto technician told me that my car was worse off than others that he'd seen before with the same problem and additonal parts had to be ordered. My car is working okay now that it has been fixed. On the other hand, I have been to the doctor several times with this neck injury. I have had x-rays, mri and ultra sound completed. The jerking of my vehicle has caused injury to the #2 vertabre in my neck. I experience head aches, severe neck pain, and shoulder and back pain. I have been to physical therapy- recommended by my doctor and to the chiropractor. I have a very hard time sleeping and working due to this pain. I called Ford motor company to alarm them of my injury due to the defective transmission in the vehicle that they manufactured. The individual that I spoke with was very rude, non- caring of my injury and spoke to me in a negative tone. I was told that there were no medical provisions on this particular recall. To this day, I am still in constant pain. I have suffered long enough and I feel that it is time for Ford motor company to own up to the rresponsibility that their defective vehicle has caused an injury.

18 Unknown Or Other problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/15/2003

I have a continued problem of the abs light coming on. I have had it in the shop 5-6 times. They changed the sensor and a while later it comes back on. On several occasions, my brakes have gone all the way to the floor. The dealership maintains that Mercury is aware of the problem and may be working on a recall. My light is now on again and have placed a call to the dealership. I have to wait for the manager to return to town to see what he would like to do. Oh, and I do have the extended warranty that I have paid over $2,000. What is that for? what will it take, my brakes to go out?.
